Here we are in the latest segment to be added to the website; Exclusive, where we’ll be giving the opportunity to our local artistes to premiere their content/work exclusively on Masses. In this first edition of the segment, we have the band, Maddthelin to premiere their new single called “Perplexity”. Maddthelin is a six-piece band hailing from Kuala Lumpur. The band was formed in 2008 by Izzul (Guitar), Daniaal (Guitar), Yasmin (Vocal), Lenny (Vocal), and Asyraf (Bass) and later joined by Adiel (Drums) in 2010.

In 2014, Yasmin left the band and Kareema filled in the missing spot in the band as a keyboardist/vocalist. With the existence of Kareema, Maddthelin went for a total different sound in their musical direction. The band delivers a mixture of post-hardcore & screamo elements which mainly influenced by bands like Eyes Set To Kill, One OK Rock, and Pierce The Veil.

After the successful release of their previous singles; “The Best For Me To Say”, “Dawn For Tomorrow”, and “Forfeit”, The winner of the Astro Music Video Grant continues to band their heads with their new single called “Perplexity” which is one of the track in their upcoming debut album called, “Ascension”. Before you people got stoked up for the new single, we did a short interview with Daniaal as he talks about the single “Perplexity”. Read all about it below:-

1. Can you tell us what is the whole idea behind the single “Perplexity”?

“Perplexity” is about being held back from achieving what you know you can achieve as a result of having to adhere to someone else’s goals and dreams. You start losing yourself and face somewhat of an identity crisis, hence the term “Perplexity”.

2. With the existence of Kareema, and the departure of Yasmin, how did you guys cope with the situation? And how the newly-added member changes Maddthelin as a band?

Having a band member leaving was never easy for me and the rest of band. But we as a band set our mind to keep on pushing forward to pursue our (and Yasmin’s) goals for the band. Kareema later stepped in with the same ambitious attitude eager to start working together. In terms of having Kareema in the band, we don’t feel much different as we’re used to having a girl in the group but composition wise, we felt that she helped us a lot in developing and elevating the new sound of “Maddthelin”.

3. Describe us the recording process of the new single, any memorable moments to share?

We recorded this single and the rest of the album with Nash Muhandes. To be frank, he’s very detail and particular about his work that we had to do every take almost perfect. Hahaha! Other than that, he helped us a lot with the arrangements and post-production stuff. Actually, most part of the recording was done last year (2014). There were hiccups along the way that we’ve decided to release it later than we’ve expected.

4. Okay short one, one word to describe Maddthelin?

“MADDTHELIN”

5. Hahaha good and safe answer! Next up, what are the future plans for Maddthelin, maybe a music video for another single? You guys are coming out with an album soon right?

Yes, we’re going to come out with a debut album called “Ascension” hopefully by this September and also currently planning on a couple of music videos for the upcoming singles. Oh yes, and maybe a tour in conjunction with the album release. So you guys better start saving money lah for the album!

6. Okay we’re sure fans are all hyped up about the album. So, maybe you can give us a little snippet on how the album is going to be? Tease a bit lah.

Hahaha! The album will consists of 10 songs and we’re now in the process of finalizing the tracks and album layout. If you have already heard the songs released on TAPAUtv’s Big A Jamz session, then you know they are totally different from our older materials. More mature sound and composition I would say with the addition of piano and string arrangement that we never did in our previous releases. And yes, THREE THOUSAND LAYERS OF BACKUP VOCALS TOO, THANKS KAREEMA!

7. So to wrap this up, any last words for the fans of Maddthelin?

From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to say thank you to everyone that has been supporting/helping not just us, Maddthelin but the entire local music scene and we assure you that our album will be worthy for you guys. And not to forget, thank you to you guys for giving Maddthelin the opportunity to be featured on Masses! <3MADD
