To celebrate this mushy and lovey-dovey day, we decided to add 10 movies to the list of love-themed movies you can watch with your special someone. Happy Valentine’s Day and we hope you enjoy watching the movies listed here.
1. Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
An adaptation of the novel “Q&A”, the film is about a young man Jamal Malik, who emerges from the Slums and appears on the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? He appears to be able to answer all questions, which arouses the suspicions of him being a cheater whereby he’s interrogated and tells his life story. A solid plot and strong direction make this flick a winner as we see how far a man will go to find his childhood sweetheart.
2. Edward Scissorhands (1990)
An endearing, passionate yet unusual love story between an artificially made man (Edward) and teenager Kim Boggs. We watch as Edward, who is taken in and lives under her roof, struggles to fit in with the rest of society as he is looked upon as a freak while Kim overcomes her initial fear of him and begins to see that beneath his bizarre exterior is a gentle soul. Together, they find that their romance has obstacles especially by Kim’s overbearing boyfriend. One of Tim Burton’s best films and moving soundtracks, this is definitely a movie to watch but just remember to bring a tissue box.
3. Enough Said (2013)
Is it possible for Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), a middle aged divorcee and a mother of a teenage girl, to still find love and romance? The answer is yes but what happens when she finds out that Albert, played by the late James Gandolfini, is the ex-husband of her good friend? Warm, witty and brilliantly directed by Nicole Holofcener, the film ranked fifth best-reviewed wide release back in 2013. Well, enough said.
4. A Walk to Remember (2002)
A tearjerker based on Nicholas Sparks’s novel so bring along some tissues. A coming-of-age flick, Landon Carter (Shane West) is a rebellious teenager who avoids expulsion by tutoring fellow student and in the process meets Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore) who happens to be the daughter of the church minister. A romance slowly begins for the two but tragedy looms as Jamie has leukemia. A Walk to Remember is one of those movies that reminds you to not just cherish your life but also of the ones around you.
5. The Wedding Singer (1998)
Ah, we harken back to the good old days of Adam Sandler. Before he starred in crappy movies like That’s My Boy and Jack and Jill, he acted in this classic from the 90s. He plays a wedding singer who meets a catering service waitress played by Drew Barrymore. They seem to hit it off but both of them are respectively seeing someone else. What happens is a series of hilarious and odd events that bring them both finally together. If you miss Sandler’s brand of humor, we highly recommend it for the memorable scenes especially the scenes with Rosie, the adorable rapping grandmother.
6. Moulin Rouge (2001)
A musical film set in Paris, Ewan McGregor plays Christian, a depressed British writer, who falls head over heels for Satine (Nicole Kidman), a terminally ill singer. Satine also happens to be the star of the Moulin Rouge, a nightclub where men come to be entertained by the shows performed by dancers. In between them is the Duke, a powerful man who will do anything to make Satine love him. Will the Duke discover the secret love affair and kill Christian? Will love trump jealousy? But most importantly, will love keep Satine alive? Kidman’s performance alone makes this a worthwhile watch.
7. Jerry Maguire (1996)
Directed by Cameron Crowe, this film is about Jerry (Tom Cruise), a successful sports agent, who finds himself spiraling down in his career, which prompts him to start his own agency. The only one who will follow him is Dorothy Boyd, a single mother with a very cute son. During the course of the movie, they get married and Jerry’s career starts picking up again but will Jerry’s work jeopardize their marriage? Comic relief comes in the form of Dorothy’s son (Jonathan Lipnicki) and Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.). An all round stellar performance and memorable lines like “Show me the money!” and “You had me at hello”, if you haven’t watched it, please do.
8. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
While the title may be misleading, this is actually one of the best teen romance back in the day. Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger steal the screen in the comedy that chronicles the relationship between 2 outcasts in high school. Stiles’s Kat, beautiful but abrasive, is not looking for love until Ledger’s Verona uses his Aussie charm to change her life and her aversion to dating guys. Also starring a young Joseph Gordon Levitt, this nostalgic movie will certainly take you down memory lane. Watch out for that scene where Verona serenades Kat at the football field.
9. Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011)
Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei and Kevin Bacon. If the movie doesn’t draw you in with the talented, star power cast, then the sweetness and humor of the romantic-comedy film will. Carell is at his best as a family man dealing with the fact that his beloved wife, played by Moore, cheated on him and on top of that, asks him for a divorce. Crazy, Stupid, Love scores points for being smart and funny while showing us the insane, silly things we do when it comes to winning back the love of our lives.
10. Pretty Woman (1990)
Julia Roberts plays a high-end Hollywood prostitute who meets a wealthy businessman played by Richard Gere. Normally, this would turn out to be an unlikely union in real life but in this flick, it becomes a fairytale as we watch Vivian conquer the arid heart of Edward. The line, “You and I are such similar creatures Vivian. We both screw people for money”, was seriously one of the best lines ever said in movie history. Till today, Pretty Woman is regarded as one of the best romantic movies ever made.
