A movie that’s unlike any other typical modern horror narrative, ‘Doctor Sleep’ follows the events of ‘The Shining’ with Mike Flanagan taking the directing reigns.
If you recall, ‘The Shining’ came to a close with Jack freezing to death after getting lost in a maze outside the hotel, while Wendy (Jack’s wife) and Danny were able to make their escape in a snowcat. Following these events, the sequel reveals Danny (Jack’s son) struggling with alcoholism, who is still traumatized by the sinister events that occurred at the Overlook Hotel when he was a child.
Dan, who possess the gift of the ‘shine’ (a fusion of telepathy and clairvoyance) meets a teen, Abra who is currently endangered as she too, shares the same gift with Danny. No longer trying to make peace with his past, Dan finds himself revisiting Overlook Hotel along with Abra to resolve the conflict between the True Knot, a cult whose members try to feed off the ‘shine’ of innocents to become immortal.
This sequel takes the audience back to Overlook Hotel, revisiting famed sights such as the brown, red, orange carpet, the axed-away ‘REDRUM’ door in the Torrance family’s old room and the return of the perpetually creepy Grady twins along with former Overlook Hotel cook Dick Hallorann.
This psychological thriller film incorporates multiple elements from the previous series along with visions of King’s multiverse. Hence, the story’s mysterious nature and the withholding of details that would provide clearer meaning behind many of the film’s components are much anticipated. Enough of jump scares, we finally get a chilling psychological thriller that everyone deserves.
Doctor Sleep releases on November 8 worldwide. In the meantime, watch the trailers above to continue on the IT hype.
