After a year of teasing, controversy, questionable casting choices, the live action remake of the famed Disney movie, Mulan makes a triumphant return to the big screens.
Much like the original, the story follows along the tale of Hua Mulan, whom drafts herself into the mens only Imperial Army in place of her ailing father when the Emperor of China issues an order that one man per family must serve to protect China from the Northern Invaders. Disguised as a man named Hua Jun, she is put to the test as she goes through the trials and tribulations of her epic journey to become a true warrior and earn the respect of her nation. Thankfully, the movie hasn’t been whitewashed, featuring an international cast from the likes of Liu Yifei as Mulan, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott as Böri Khan Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, and Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor.
Niki Caro takes on the directing helm, following a storyline that roughly mirrors the original sans a few details. For instance, the remake follows more closely to the its source, ‘Ballad of Mulan’ rather than the adapted animated version which omits Mushu and Cri-kee, Mulan’s companions as she follows along her journey.
The movie is slated to release next year during Spring. Are you excited?
