With a retro film as its muse, Crossover and PUMA have struck a collaboration which will culminate in the launch of the Velvet Twin Pack collection, comprising two pairs of shoes that embody dark hues and symbolic references. Both shoes are reimagined counterparts of PUMA’s Blaze of Glory and Disc Blaze silhouette named ‘Roses’ and ‘Mystery’ respectively, which are designed after David Lynch’s 1986 neo-noir mystery film Blue Velvet. Now deemed as one of the greatest cinematographic experiences that emerged from the 80s, the film took a surrealist approach in merging psychological horror with film noir.

The movie explores erotic despair that is enveloped by a dark yet satirical story and intentionally cheap cinematography. The PUMA x Crossover duo attempt to channel those aspects into the upcoming two pairs of shoes, and we will see the first pair at the middle of this month.

The first release of the Velvet Twin Pack, ‘Roses’, flaunts a colourway that interprets Blue Velvet’s opening scene showing a white picket fence with a clear blue sky and red roses as the backdrop, a view typical of suburban America.

Major tonal grey treatment is seen on the mesh upper which is placed under nubuck and leather, with a speckled cage on the overlay. The pink accents on the tongue, lace and sole display Crossover’s signature colour while a sky blue tone freshens the insole and stitches around the tongue. The primary colourway adorns the outsole while keeping the rose stencil print near the heel.

The final portion of the Velvet Twin Pack, ‘Mystery’, embodies the film’s antagonist Frank Booth in shoe form. Suffering a near fatal stroke, the antagonist’s oxygen mask is interpreted as a see-through disc cap on a pitch black upper constructed of mesh, nubuck and suede. The white speckled black cage symbolises the tiniest specks of goodness buried miles deep within the dark persona. A contrast of Crossover’s signature pink on the heel tab, surrounded by all the black colouration, symbolises the unpredictable behaviour of Frank Booth.

While we won’t be able to grab a pair of ‘Mystery’ just yet, ‘Roses’ be launched in Malaysia exclusively at Crossover Mid Valley on Friday, April 15th.
