5 Gifts For Your Music Loving Friends Or Family

Written by Aqil Nasri

Tell me, who hates music? I’m sure every single person living on this planet right now listens to music, in any way shape or form. Even your grumpy aunt (who I’m pretty sure hates you) who keeps on nagging at you on when will you be getting married has, at some point in her life, listened and fell in love with the beauty of music. Music has the ability to transcend space and time, to reconnect lost souls and form new bonds with people who may not have anything in common at first meet. Everlasting bonds were built because of music, and as such, there’s no denying the absolute power that music has on people.

So, because of that, I’ve listed several items that can help reinvigorate tired souls who love music or help newcomers get better acquainted with the world of music. These are just some of many examples of gifts that you can get for your friends or families, and I hope that it can give you guys some idea what to get those music lovers for this year’s Christmas.

For The Concert/Gig Goer

Vibes High Fidelity Concert Earplugs (RM111.00)

Live music is amazing. Seeing your favourite artist perform live is a goal in itself sometimes, and the feel of being in the same atmosphere surrounded by thumping speakers is a surreal feeling.

However, for someone who regularly attends these shows, your ears can get pretty damaged if you don’t take care of them properly during live shows. The extremely loud and thumping speakers may chip away at your eardrums, causing potential hearing problems for you in the future. So, getting these earplugs might be the best idea.

The Vibes High Fidelity Concert Earplugs help reduce noise levels up to 22 decibels, but it won’t cancel noise out completely, as it basically just filters out certain frequencies that might damage hearing after prolonged exposure. Because it’s no fun when everyone has to shout at you when they’re talking and for you to completely mishear whatever they’re saying.

Ear safety, is the best safety.

Someone who loves Vinyl

ION Audio Max LP Turntable (RM570.00)

You can never go wrong with listening to music the the analog way, and with the age of streaming in full peak, sometimes it’s just nice to be able to physically hold your music. Putting down the record on the turntable, dropping the needle, and being amazed at how music is able to come out from just the tiny little grooves present on the vinyl. You just can’t get the same experience digitally.

I recommend getting your friends or family members who absolutely love listening on vinyl the ION Audio Max LP Turntable. Pricewise, it’s one that’s bang for your buck, as the tons of features and great built-in speakers that come with it are second-to-none. This vinyl player features USB connectivity that converts the physical records that you have into digital files. So, this means that you can even save your records on your digital devices if you want to.

For The Audiophile

Etymotic ER4 XR (RM 1528.00)

These are the ones who consistently treat their ears with the upmost amounts of love and care. They won’t let their ears touch products of any less quality then they demand. They love to enjoy their music as it’s the most important in their lives. With that, you’ll need to be sure that they get the best that they deserve.

The Etymotic ER4 XR is probably one of the best in-ear earphones that you can get for yourse– I mean for your friends or relatives who is an audiophile. This astounding marvel of technology is something that does not come every day. With accurate mids and highs, that’s perfectly combined with the deep bass response, it doesn’t get any better than this. The cable included is also fully detachable and high-quality as well. However, there’s no mic present for these earphones, but for true audiophiles, I’m sure they won’t mind as much as earphones are primarily used for listening instead of talking. If price point is no issue, this is as close to accuracy as you can get.

For The One Who Needs To Take The Music Everywhere

JBL GO 2 (RM180.00)

These are the types of people who like to move around a lot but hate carrying large speakers. They prefer portability but still want to enjoy their music loudly for the world to hear.

The JBL GO 2 is probably the most perfect portable speaker for them. The wireless Bluetooth streaming that’s built-in will stream high-quality sound from your smartphone, tablet, computer, or any Bluetooth devices that have audio connections capabilities. 5 hours playtime on a single charge is reasonable, with the batteries being built-in and completely rechargeable (Cables included as well). Apart from that, the speaker is waterproof, hence sea and pool worries are a thing of the past.

For The One Who Wants To Improve their Craft

Subscription to Masterclass online film scoring class by Hans Zimmer (RM373.00)

Has your friend ever wanted to improve in music but they never actually wanted to take the initiative and go for it? Do they always just complain to you?

Well, gifting your friend a subscription to Hans Zimmer Film Scoring class might just get their asses off the couch. With lessons on tempo, sound palettes, and more, the legendary film composer from famous movies such as “Inception” sure has a lot to teach your friend on the basis of film scoring. Now, some might say, “Why do I need to know about film scoring if I don’t have any intention of entering the film industry?”. Well, his lesson doesn’t only apply to films, they also apply to music composing in general.

I hope that this list will give you some notion of what to buy if you have a friend who loves music.

Food Origins: Teh Tarik

How Our National Drink Came To Be

Written by Aqil

Welcome to Food Origins, a new series which talks about where, how, and why some of our favourite Malaysian foods came to be, and for the first installment, we take an inquisitive look at the ever so popular Teh Tarik.

A drink fit for any occasion, teh tarik is a unique beverage on its own. Frothy, sweet head that immediately transitions to a smooth and warm drink, it is found at almost every eatery in Malaysia, a complement for breakfast, teatime, dinner, or your lepak sessions at night; but where did such an iconic drink come from? And why is the tea “Pulled?”

In order to trace back the roots of this famous beverage, we would need to go all the way back 70+ years ago, around the time when World War II just ended. During those times, South East Asia’s demand for labour was at its peak, causing huge waves of immigrant workers from China and India to come over to Malaysia and Singapore to find work (Temasik at that time, part of Old Malaya). This was the seed that birthed the drink as we know it.

The Indian Muslim immigrants who came from India brought along their tradition of sarabat, or in English, drink stalls. Some work as chai wallahs (tea seller) and opened tea stalls across factories or mining caves. Workers from those places would come out and drink teh tarik from the stalls that were opened, and eventually, it became a staple of everyday life for them to drink it, and was eventually assimilated into the culture over time.

So, how is the tea made? Well, the original chai from India was made with the addition of spices, which was abundant in the country. Before trade routes opened and spices were made more available here, the tea sellers in Malaya had to improvise, as the spices used in the original recipe was not easily accessible for most. Thus, came the use of condensed milk, which changed the original flavour completely and brought along the familiar taste that everyone in Malaysia know and love.

For the type of tea used, the original tea sellers in Malaya had to use tea dust, which was basically leftovers of tea leaves from processing. This was their only affordable tea source as their wages were incredibly low back then, causing them to be more creative when they created this drink. However, tea dust was known to be extremely bitter, so the condensed milk helped reduce the bitter taste to tolerable levels.

What’s special about this drink is the tarik part. Now tarik basically means pull, so this means that the tea is technically pulled when being poured into a glass. This is done by pouring the drink back and forth between a pitcher and a glass. Doing so causes the sugar and milk to mix with the tea more effectively, increasing the taste much better than if you stirred the drink with a spoon. Also, the only way to produce a proper thick and foamy end on top of the glass is to pull the drink, and since everyone loved it so much, the technique stuck throughout history. The art of the tarik has been so special and unique that competitions have been held to see who can be the best teh tarik maker.

What was once a labourer’s staple, has now become a de facto choice that’s well known across all edges of Malaysia. Whatever race, religion, or creed, it’s nice to see a drink unite everyone at a table, sharing endless amounts of stories, accompanying sessions that go late into the night, and providing everyone a drink that’ll fill your soul (and arteries).

Higher Refresh Rates In Smartphones; An Improvement, Or Just A Gimmick?

Featured image by: digit

Do the differences in refresh rate matter?

Written by Aqil Nasri

Most current in-trend smartphones have a standard 60 Hz refresh rate. This magic number that you see on every foreseeable monitor, tv, and phone has been the norm for many years, and only recently have companies tried to break that current standard.

90 Hz and above was only ever heard of in high performance gaming monitors, or high end TVs, but the speed of technology is approaching light speed, and the new figure is fast looking to be the new magic number.

Nowadays, you can get smartphones that have refresh rates of 90 Hz, and even some up to 120 Hz. Such an example of a powerhouse was the Razer Phone that launched back in 2017. It was nonsensically fast, but this translated to the smoothest scrolling experience that trumps even the flagship Samsungs and Apples.

Now, some of you may be thinking, what the heck does Hz or refresh rate even mean? Well, let me explain it to you. Refresh rates basically mean the measure or number of times that a screen needs to redraw the image portrayed on it (screens).

In layman terms, when a smartphone has a 60 Hz display, it means that the display of the phone will render an image about 60 times per second, or 60 frames per second (fps). This enables the smooth motion that users see when they scroll up and down on their phones or when they view videos or play games.

So, let’s get to the question. Do the refresh rates exhibit actual differences?

Well, the answer is a mix between a no and a yes.

ASUS ROG Phone 2 comes with a whopping 120 Hz display

To the casual user, 90 Hz only means a much more pleasing smartphone experience. Scrolling through just became that much more effortless, and every input through the phone is like butter. But where this number matters however, is when people use their smartphones to play games. Much like a high refresh rate monitor, in-game aspects such as a fast moving FPS game like Call Of Duty Mobile or Fortnite are rendered much more quickly, providing more accurate information to the user and enable them to react faster. Which is all well and good.

But with a creamy display comes a few not so creamy drawbacks. For one, refreshing the display so frequently all the time will absolutely tank the battery life of the phone. Google’s new Pixel 4 comes equipped with a dynamic refresh rate adjuster whereby when you look at the device, it’ll bump to 120 HZ, and drops to 90 Hz when you look away in a bid to save battery life, but it only gives a marked improvement of half an hour of extra juice.

Apart from that, high refresh rate screen aren’t the industry norm yet. Hence, support for such phones are not that widespread, but this is a minor niggle.

All in all, it depends on what you need the refresh rate for. It makes sense if you just want to upgrade your user experience or if you frequently game on mobile. Otherwise, why fix something that’s not broke? It’ll save you a bit of battery life too.

What If Porsche Designed A Star Wars Fighter?

Creativity has no bounds, and creativity, can also literally come from anywhere, and this falls right smack in between the two realms. From sunglasses, book shelves, and even a shisha bong, Porsche Design is the brand’s creative outlet to design almost anything its heart desires, and this collaboration is a result of zero parameters and restraints.

To celebrate the incoming Star Wars: Rise Of Skywalker movie, Lucasfilms have collaborated with Porsche Design to create their very own Stargfighter called Tri-Wing S-91 X Pegasus Starfighter. A mouthful, yes, but serves as a platform for Porsche to imbue its design language into the Star Wars universe.

“The design of the spaceship is harmoniously integrated into the Star Wars film world while at the same time demonstrating clear analogies with the characteristic Porsche styling and proportions,” says Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche at Porsche AG. “The basic shape of the cabin, which tapers towards the rear, and a highly distinctive topography from the cockpit flyline to the turbines establish visual parallels with the iconic design of the 911 and the Taycan. The very compact layout conveys dynamism and agility, lending emphasis to the Porsche design features mentioned.”

“This collaboration is an amazing opportunity to merge the design aesthetics of Porsche and Star Wars. I found it to be creatively challenging and extremely inspiring,” says Doug Chiang, Vice President and Executive Creative Director for Lucasfilm. “It is thrilling to infuse Star Wars with Porsche styling to create an iconic new spaceship that could exist both on Earth or in the cinematic universe.”

The concept will be brought to life in a 1.5 meter model at the December film premiere of the final episode in the trilogy.
