Cut & Paste Characterized Kuala Lumpur 2013

Over the past few decades, Malaysia has been bearing a rapidly fast changing landscape within the creative industries. As Malaysia establishes its national creative policy to be at sync with the heartbeat of the emerging global creative economy – there has been nationwide expansion of creative establishments, particularly in graphic design, motion, product and web design.

Founder of Cut & Paste, John Fiorelly, started the event back in 2005 from New York, where Cut & Paste is still based, before moving across 30 cities around the United States, Latin America, Europe, The Middle East and now in Asia.

This year for the first time, the Cut & Paste Digital Design Tournament: Characterized, has arrived in Malaysia and is a competition like no other. it is a design battle, set to bringing designers onto the stage and in the limelight – where they will be put into sets of teams, pitted against each other to battle their design skills in front of a live audience.

In this competition, the 3 teams of 2 designers were challenged to create a “Sidekick” character and the relationship between them and their “Main Character” who does not already have a Sidekick character. The competition was made up of 3 onstage rounds, each intended to create a product to be used in the following round. In the first 10-minute onstage round, competitors prepared a black & white sketch of their “main character” character. In the second 10-minute round, they prepared a second black & white sketch of the “sidekick” character. In the final 15-minute round, the teams created a scene with both characters in full detail showing their relationship.

Hats off to our CHARACTERIZED KL winners Kenji Chai and CLOAK. Check out video below to get a glimpse of the winning artwork.

MONARCHII Spring/Summer 2013 “PEONY FLORAL” Collection

Although in Malaysia we do not experience the ‘Spring’ season, we definitely experience a lot of ‘Summer’ all year round, and for the fashion calendar, the Spring / Summer season is already knocking on our doors. In this Spring / Summer season, we have seen a lot of floral offerings from many overseas and local brands alike, the MONARCHII label has also joined the floral themed bandwagon and has released their new collection which is fully floral themed.

Setting themselves apart from the other brands that are offering the floral themed collections, MONARCHII’s latest collection is very much rooted in Fooi’s chinese roots, who is the designer and founder of MONARCHII. The floral designs that is spotted on the collection has an oriental twist to it, and is made out of thicker and rougher cotton material to give it a different texture. The collection goes up on sale on the 1st of May 2013, and will be made available at their online store and also selected stores across the Klang Valley area.1278gh231y2b31h23

The Deciders Spring/Summer 2013 Collection – Delivery 1

Introducing their new spring / summer ’13 collection as ‘UNBREAKABLE’ which is also the brand’s new catchphrase which reflects themselves, the hard work and the hard times that they have been through, especially in our tough local streetwear landscape.

Only releasing 4 items in total, for delivery one, the label’s approach to this new line is to exhibit a very limited-quantity line that boast products of high quality and finishing. It is also evident that the label has taken a new direction and approach to their style, which spots a more simple and basic ‘work-wear’ feel and look to it, yet at the same time being fresh and current, as seen in their tropical-floral themed 5 panel caps.

This song may not be the most current song around, and by current I mean it may not be filled with pumping basslines, or dancey-fused-EDM rhythm, and yes, it is not Justin Bieber’s latest single, but hey, nobody said there is a set formula to good music. Good music is still good music.

For those of you who’ve never heard of them, they’ve been around the Malaysian music scene for more than 10 years, and by watching this video, and listening to this song, you will soon find out why Seven Collar T-Shirt (SCTS) have not only manage to stick around, but also manage to lead the English Music scene in Malaysia.
