MASSESzine no. 5 : The DENIM Issue

Before you pick up a copy and get cracking at this issue, I would just like to take this opportunity to apologize for our tardiness in putting out this issue as it was supposed to be out ages ago. Well there is a perfect reason why we were late on this issue, and it’s simply because it is the DENIM ISSUE! The denim world is a really, really big blue one that not a lot of us in the team have explored before. Because of our lack of knowledge, we had a lot questions to ask, a lot of ground to cover and a lot of research to do.

Although all of us own at least a pair of jeans, but almost all of us (the MASSES team at least) have no idea how they are made, the difference between sanforized or unsanforized jeans, or even the answer to the simple question of why majority of jeans are blue in color? *cough INDIGO cough*.

In all honesty, this issue is our own way of answering our own questions about the denim world. It is, actually, a very selfish endeavor.  But instead of being totally selfish about it, we thought it be cool to share our findings with you guys through this issue (we’re such nice people right?). We’ve learned a lot, had many AHA moments and really had a ton of fun putting this issue together. So we hope that every one of you that has picked up a copy experience the same things we did. Enjoy!

Peace,

Bryan ‘Botak’ Chin

PS: If you want a copy of the magazine shipped to your doorstep, please send us an email to bryan@masses.com.my (*postage to be paid by you*) and we will make it happen.

5 Fashion Hacks You Should Know

Getting dressed up, It’s something we do every day. It makes sense that we all have a few clothing tricks up our sleeve to make our daily life easier. Here are 5 fashion hacks that we put together that is useful for everyone.

1. Wearing a tie outside under a windy weather makes us looked ridiculous with our tie flying around. This won’t happen if we have a tie bar/clip, but if you don’t have one here is the trick. On every tie, there is a fabric opening at the tip of the tie. Place a coin in it to add weight and your tie will stay still!

2. We’re all too aware of the threats of washing a great pair of jeans. Washing a pair of jeans will change the colour of the jeans, and many denim heads out there would rather keep it unwashed.  But we can’t deny that our jeans do smell, so what’s the trick to take away the foul smell? First make sure your jeans is dry to begin with. Fold your jeans nicely and put it into a zip-lock bag or any plastic bag and sealed it. After that, put it in the freezer overnight and your jeans will be fresh once again.

3. Hangers will expand our T-shirt collar overtime. This is because hangers aren’t supportive enough for most cotton fabrics and will distort the shape of your T-shirt after a period of time. So what should we do? We encourage you to fold your T-shirt after ironing it instead of hanging it to avoid stretching your t-shirt and to keep your favourite T-shirt crisp!

4. Funky feet and smelly shoes can lead to displeasure, embarrassment, and can prove to be a huge social problem. Imagine taking off your shoes in public places with an odour burst that creates discomfort to people around you. A simple way to freshen up your shoe at home is using baking soda. Pour in a tablespoon of baking soda in your shoes and let the substance absorb the odour overnight. To avoid the mess, we encourage you to put the baking powder on top of a paper towel in the shoe for easy clean up. Baking soda can be used in a broad variety of ways, even as an anti-fungal powder.

5. Everyone owns at least a pair of button up shirt and we wear them often. There are times where the button’s thread get loose and  falls out as the thread starts shredding up. Here is a are tricks where you could make the buttons last for a very long time. Apply some clear nail polish to seal up frayed button threads, the nail polish will dry up and hold the thread together for longer life spend!

adidas Yeezy 350 Boost Detailed Look

We gotta admit that before we held the shoe in our hands, just by looking at the pictures on the net, we thought the sneaker would be extremely light and flimsy. Upon holding it in our hands, the shoe feels solid, durable, and definitely well made. Even the Primeknit upper is thicker than usual. Kanye went with a very minimal look and feel and focused on material, form and style. No extra panelling needed with the no-nonsense one piece Primeknit upper which is complemented with a reflective rope lace. All of which sits atop a futuristic Boost cushioning midsole.

It goes without saying that this release will definitely be one of the most anticipated release of 2015. Malaysia has been Yeezy-hungry because we have not had any Yeezy sneakers released here in Malaysia since the first Air Yeezy back in 2009. The pair drops at adidas Originals (Pavilion) store and Crossover Concept Store in Sunway Pyramid. Priced at RM850, and a raffle system in place (for the first 100 customers), who can complain?
