MASSES Picks: 5 Movies You Probably Have Not Watched (June)

MCDICTH EC001

Here comes another list of movies for this month of June. From comedy, to exploring America’s dark social problems to brutality and violence, we have listed a variety of movies that will appeal to even the most casual of movie watchers and shock you to your core. You may or may not have watched these movies but they were definitely banned in Malaysia.

Enjoy the movies listed here and leave a comment at the bottom!

1. The Dictator (2012)

Sacha Baron Cohen aka Borat aka Ali G aka Bruno, plays another eccentric character in this movie, The Dictator. This time, he plays General Aladeen, who has ruled the North African country of Wadiya since the age of 6 (WTH?!) when his father died in a “hunting accident” (do 97 bullets and a hand grenade count as an accident?). Tamir, played by Ben Kingsley, advises him to relocate to New York after a failed assassination attempt where he learns he has been betrayed. Alone and starting from the bottom, Aladeen must work his way back up and regain control of his country. Those familiar with Cohen’s work can expect more of his usual slapstick humor and more than borderline perverse antics.

2. God Bless America (2011)

If you want to know what’s wrong with America or you already have a problem with American culture, this movie is right up your alley. A dark comedy, the movie follows the killing spree of Frank Murdoch, a middle-aged insurance salesman sick with the rudeness of Americans due to pop culture and Internet influences, and Roxanne Harmon, a teenage girl who proves to have a lot in common with Frank. Their goal: To kill only people they deem “bad”. A political satire with black humor, this movie also explores the social problems of America that is still very much provocative and relevant.

3. Zach and Miri make a Porno (2008)

The movie title got your attention ‘cause of the ‘P’ word right? Despite the title, it’s not what you think as nudity isn’t the main feature (well, just a little bit) and instead, the focus on the aforementioned characters in the title, Zach and Miri. Struggling to pay their rent and other debts, they both come up with the ‘brilliant’ idea to make money: by making an adult movie. In the process, they meet a bunch of quirky characters (watch out for the poop scene), face ‘porno’ challenges and finally realize their feelings for each other. One of the better Seth Rogen’s flicks, this is a must watch film.

4. Ichi the Killer (2001)

This Japanese film depicts violence and cruelty at its best (or worst, depending how you look at it). Ichi, a horribly scarred man with an even more scarred mentality, and Kakihara, a bloodthirty Yakuza, sets of a chain of events that feature graphic torture and killings to the maximum level. Based on a Japanese manga, the film also depicts Ichi’s beginnings and how he turned out to be the sadistic, cold-blooded killer that he is. Filled with scenes of piercings, needles, boiling oil and sliced nipples, Ichi the Killer is a shocking gorefest from the beginning to the end. Don’t say we didn’t tell you.

 5. Cannibal Holocaust (1985)

WARNING: Don’t watch this movie on a full stomach. It’s bound to make you throw up. The story is about a film documentary crew that goes missing in the Amazon jungle while filming cannibal tribes. Harold Monroe, one of the members of the teams sent to rescue the crew, recovers cans of films that belong to the crew and is appalled by their actions. Its portrayal of rape, graphic violence and animal violence made this a very controversial movie back in the mid 80s and still is realistic enough by today’s standards. Watch this just to know why this film inspired the found footage style of narrative filmmaking (Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield etc.) and for the shock value.
