5 Movies You Shouldn’t Miss Out In February

Written by Harris Kassim

This year has blessed us with so many exciting films right from the beginning, from the enigmatic war movie, 1917 to Will Smith & Martin Lawrence’s reunion in Bad Boys For Life and not to forget the grand comeback of Robert Downey Jr. in Dolittle. Next month, the movie hype train continues with these other interesting films that I have picked for you to go see!

BIRDS OF PREY (and The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) – 3 February 2020

DC Universe is finally making its comeback this year with the return of the all-time comic book fan-favorite, Harley Quinn in the new movie Birds of Prey! The movie takes place after the tragedy of Suicide Squad movie back in 2016, and it follows Harley struggling to her life together after her big break-up with her beloved puddin’, The Joker. She started to join forces with some of the familiar names in the DC comic book after a narcissistic crime lord known as Black Mask, places a hit on a little girl named Cassandra Cain. While the whole city of Gotham is tracking down on Harley, she has another mission which is to destroy Black Mask and live up to her legacy. The movie stars Margot Robbie, Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ali Wong and more.

PEREMPUAN TANAH JAHANAM – 6 FEBRUARY 2020

We can’t deny that Indonesian horror movies are just getting better and better each year. This year, Joko Anwar returns into the darkness with his new horror flick, Perempuan Tanah Jahanam. The story follows an ill-fated woman decides to go back to her isolated home village in hopes of inheritance. But what she doesn’t know, is that the villagers have been waiting for her because she has what they needed to lift off a tormenting curse. The movie marks the history for Indonesian films as it will be premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival under the name ‘Impetigore’. The movie stars Tara Basro, Marissa Anita, Christine Hakim, Asmara Abigail, and Ario Bayu.

THE KING’S MAN – 13 FEBRUARY 2020

The much-loved ‘Kingsman’ franchise making its return this year with a prequel that takes place during World War 1. The movie shows the early days of the Kingsmen and how the secret service was initially formed. According to 20th Century Studios, it acts as a collection of history’s worst tyrants and criminal masterminds gather to plot a war to wipe out millions, one man and his protégé must race against time to stop them. The movie consists of so many talented actors such as Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arteton, Rhys Irfan, Harris Dickinson, Charles Dance and many more. This movie is certainly going to be overlooked due to lack of marketing promotion, so make sure you get your Kingsman hype on lock this February!

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG – 13 FEBRUARY 2020

Sonic, the infamous SEGA character that we all love from our childhood is finally making its debut in live action form. The story begins with Sonic attempts to maneuver the complications of life on Earth with a human named Tom Wachowski. After things got more hectic, they join forces to avert the malicious Dr. Robotnik from seizing Sonic and exploiting his powers for world domination. Sonic the Hedgehog was originally slated to be released on November 8, 2019, but was postponed to February 13, 2020 after the tremendously negative responses to its first trailer that was released back in April last year. The movie stars Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey and James Marsden.

ZOMBITOPIA – 13 FEBRUARY 2020

I end the list with pride of local movies that are keep getting bigger and better as time goes on. Zombitopia follows the story after the world is still in its recovery after a zombie virus epidemic when a new strain of the virus surfaces amongst Malaysians. Zidik, who was orphaned during the first wave of the virus finds himself at risk of losing everyone he has ever cared about for the second time. Ascertaining the fact that he is insusceptible to the zombie infection, Zidik is brought up front with the big-boss behind the most recent zombie outbreak, Dr. Rahman. The movie featured a star-studded cast of local actors such as Shaheizy Sam, Bront Palarae, Elvina Mohamad, Azman Hassan, and Malaysia’s all-time sweetheart, Sharifah Amani.

Filmic DoubleTake releases an app that allows simultaneous camera shooting to the iPhone

See from both ends at the same time

Written by Aqil Nasri

Recently, Filmic has released a special new app that allows for Apple iPhone 11 users to capture videos and photos from two cameras at once. The free app, called DoubleTake, lets users choose between all the available cameras on your device and simultaneously shoot two different videos from the same piece of hardware.

The app allows users to record two video files separately from any of the iPhone’s camera, or capture and display video feed that can be displayed side-by-side, either split-screen or picture-in-picture.

It is extremely easy and user-friendly, making the app one of the most accessible ones when it comes to a photography/videography app. Upon launching the app, you start by choosing from any two cameras from the iPhone, either the ultra-wide camera, the wide camera, the telephoto camera, or even the selfie camera. Then, you’d need to choose what frame rate options you would want, 24fps, 25fps, or 30fps. The quality of the videos will all be recorded at 1080p, with 4K not being available at the time of writing.

The app is available now on the App Store. However, before everyone gets super hyped, the app is only functional from models XS and above, so tough luck to anyone without the newer models. That’s kind of a bummer but hey, new innovation begets new tech right?

Celebrate 110 Years of Old Trafford with LEGO’s new model

Build your very own Theatre of Dreams

Written by Aqil Nasri

Die-hard Red Devil fans, the time is now for you to bring Old Trafford right into the comforts of your homes.

Manchester United and LEGO have partnered up to fulfill a lifelong dream for fans who may not have the opportunity to physically go to Old Trafford themselves, or for fans who want a piece of the club to keep for themselves. The ‘Theatre of Dreams’ authentic LEGO model is a piece unlike any other. It is a fully authentic and unique, 1:600 replica model of the real stadium, going as far as to even include details such as the Munich memorial clock, the players’ tunnel, a statue of Sir Alex Ferguson, and even the Holy Trinity itself.

The special commemorative LEGO piece is part of the LEGO Creator Expert model, with it having 3,898-piece, a number quite remarkable for a LEGO piece. This set is a true collector’s item, one that any Manchester United fans should at least think of getting it one day in their lives.

This LEGO set is rated for people ages 16 and up, which is quite a high age rating for a LEGO piece. I think the main reasoning behind this is the fact that this particular piece is more of a collector’s item rather than a normal LEGO model. Also, with the high count of pieces needed for construction, higher amounts of patients and a more careful approach to placement needs to be observed by people in order to successfully build Old Trafford from the ground up.

The LEGO Creator Expert Old Trafford – Manchester United model is available now exclusively at LEGO Certified Stores for a price of RM1,149.90.

Also, in conjunction with the release of this model, new adopters of the set will stand a chance to win exclusive Manchester United merchandise such as jerseys, footballs or even caps from Adidas! All you need to do is take a screenshot of your receipt for the purchase of this LEGO model, and send your details via WhatsApp (017-6645514), writing them in the manner below:

(LEGOMU<space>RECEIPT NUMBER<space>NAME<space>NRIC)

Winners will be notified through phone and original receipts will be used to redeem the tickets.

Anyways, let us know what you think about this collab in the comments below!

The Strangelove X Nike SB Dunks Is Dropping This Weekend

We were right it seems when we speculated the rise of the SB Dunks, and the magnitude of said collabs have just switched up with the eventual release of the Strangelove Nike SB Dunk Lows.

A loveletter of sorts from the founder, Sean Cliver, the shoe is a direct reflection of the “Nike envy” he used to have back when he couldn’t afford the latest Nike silhouettes. As such, the collab has his heart inscribed onto it, down to the colours, material selection, and embroidery on the heel.

Taking inspiration from Valentine’s Day, the shoe comes with a rich blend of velvet and suede textures donned up in a bright blend of red and punk. Skull-faced heart embroideries on the rear laterals make themselves known, while the insoles incorporate a split-graphic of skeletal Cupids and a skateboard intertwined with a rose.

Finished with a transparent outsole, heart-shaped confetti is scattered on the forefoot and heel regions.

The Nike SB Dunk X Strangelove will drop on the 8th of February on Nike.com for a price of RM 389.

Why Sex Education Is One Of Netflix’s Best Creations To Date

Written by: Aida Rashid

A year has passed since the first time Sex Education embraced everybody’s Netflix watch-list, and with all it’s hype (deservingly), it is only rightful for Netflix to have renewed it for the second season. After the longest wait following it’s commercial success in 2019, the honest & charming series about literally all-things-Sex-Ed came out on the 17th of January 2020. There are a few reasons why Sex Education, particularly season 2, is one of the best originals Netflix has ever released.

(Spoilers alert!)

1. It’s not afraid to discuss major issues all at once.

Its portrayal of sexual assault

It’s crazy how diverse the types of discussions that exist in this series. I think everyone would agree one of the best story-lines in season 2 was definitely Aimee’s journey in dealing with sexual assault. It was painful to see her being traumatized by the assault, sitting alone in her bedroom crying after a whole day of denying that the assault even affected her at all. The creators managed to really portray the nuances of assault and consequences of it onto the victim. The Breakfast Club-esque scene where the girls sat in a circle discussing about the times they were assaulted in public places was also really eye-opening; how assault just keeps happening due to the entitlement that some people have over women’s bodies, and how it’s blatantly normalized. Aimee’s story-line ended with the Moordale girls taking the bus with her to show solidarity and to help her overcome her trauma of getting on the bus.

I think that commentary was extremely important to me, especially coming from a conservative society that would more likely victim-blame rather than focusing on getting attackers and rapists accountable. It reassures victims of sexual assault out there that it is never their fault, and that they should always confide in someone they trust to ease the pain.

Inclusive & diverse representation of race, gender, & sexual orientation

Aside from the obvious racial diversity the show represents, it also depicts a broad spectrum of sexual orientation; Ola with pansexuality, Adam with bisexuality, Eric & Rahim with homosexuality, Florence with asexuality and etc. This kind of representation on one of the major streaming platforms is vital for individuals who seek familiarity and relatability in their everyday lives. I think the one that got me the most was Jean’s dialogue with Florence, where she said “sex doesn’t make us whole. And so, how could you ever be broken?” in response to Florence’s worry of being broken for not wanting to engage in sexual activities. That bit isn’t only able to give affirmation towards asexuals, but also to other individuals who feel like they do not belong in a hyper-sexualized society.

Other issues

Aside from that, it also explores substance addiction through Erin, Maeve’s mother who abandoned her during most of her teenage years. Despite having limited screen-time, the creators managed to portray how addiction relapses may make-or-break familial relationships. It also explores mental health through Jackson’s struggle in facing immense pressure from his perfectionist parent that eventually led to self-harm. Not to forget, it also touches on disability through Isaac’s character, who is an actual differently-able person with spinal cord injury.

2. The screenwriting is witty, humorous, and relatable.

I think what makes Sex Education special is the fact that they are able to deliver important information like actual sex education (dealing with the chlamydia “epidemic”, morning-after pills, safe sex) through memorable & funny yet informative ways. The unflinching frankness of the writing may seem like the show is a portrayal of a teenager being horny-on-main, but I feel like that’s the whole point of it. It is meant to show the true lives of teenagers in their post-pubescent days, figuring out their sexuality in such naivety. The creator, Laurie Nunn, whose Sex Education is her first ever breakthrough in major TV, managed to turn explicit discussions that may appear gross and uncomfortable into educational comedy that’s sweet and charming.

3. The characters are multi-dimensional, you don’t know who to love (or hate)!

This is one of the things that I really appreciate about this show; how they take their time in laying out each and everyone of the characters’ arcs. Not one character was left insufficiently explored. The characters are not one-dimensional in the sense that they are either exceptionally good or bad, but instead everyone is rather in between.

Otis may portray a nerdy and innocent persona, but he exploits his naive-17-year-old friends for money in exchange for sex advice from an inexperienced standpoint. He also publicly expressed his dislike towards Ola while drunk at his party; which was a dick move. Eric is flamboyant and extremely likeable, but he also sorta cheated on Rahim and left him heartbroken, crying on a bench alone after the whole Adam-confesses-his-love-for-Eric-on-stage fiasco. I loved how these characters made some questionable choices despite their default of supposedly being the “good guys”; just like real teenagers would do.

Even the newly added characters like Rahim, Viv, Isaac even Adam’s mom had their own distinct personalities with significance to the plot.

Not only that, I also feel like the friendships were also emphasized enough. They almost always pair up really different personalities together and portray how seamless their friendships are. We have the adorably healthy friendship of Eric and Otis; the wholesome, affectionate friendship between Maeve and Aimee; the unexpectedly sweet bond between Viv and Jackson; the heartwarmingly platonic friendship between Adam and Ola; and the full-of-banter-friendship Maeve and Isaac have.

4. It pays homage to classic teen-flicks

I think it’s necessary to mention how the Sex Education universe is definitely a pleasantly odd one — it feels like a John Hughes movie with the 80s wardrobe and the music, except it is a teenage utopia with natural diversity in terms of racial and gender inclusion. It was cool to see certain scenes emulating famous teen-flicks we grew up watching. The most significant one has to be The Breakfast Club-esque scene where the girls, who were of different cliques and personalities, were being put together in detention. They then started to confide to each other about the times they were sexually assaulted. It was refreshing to see such portrayal of unforeseen bond. The other one would be the very much Mean Girls-esque scene whereby Headmaster Groff was photocopying Dr. Jean Milburn’s notes and disseminated them for revenge. It was really hilarious to watch a grown man circulating what felt like a Burn Book.

There’s a robot that can…sweat?

This revolution in tech may solve overheating issues permanently

Written by Aqil Nasri

Sweating has been such a standard process in our lives that we never really give it a thought. It’s part of our lives, part of how we live, and part of what makes us human, right?

Well, these scientists have gone the extra mile and came up with an invention that could forever change the way machines operate.

Introducing the gripper, a soft robot hand/finger that sweats.

The robot was designed for long operating hours, in which normal machinery might get easily overheated and lead to problems in future performances. The robot is built by having hollow, pressurized reservoirs inside the finger-like design of the robot. The reservoirs are then filled with water and connected to the surface via ducts that are made of heat-reactive plastic. So, once the plastic gets at a certain temperature, the pores surrounding the plastic would open and water from inside the reservoir get pushed out.

The water then evaporates, in which a cooling effect is produced towards the robot’s fingers. This mechanism is almost identical to the sweat glands that humans have, which basically tells us that humans are pretty well made.

The gripper was created by scientists from Istituto Italiano di Technologia and Cornell University. They’ve claimed that this could be very important for designing robots that one day could fully operate independently.

Robert Shepherd, associate professor of Cornell’s Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and also co-author of the research, said this during a briefing, “We believe [this] is a basic building block of a general-purpose, adaptive, and enduring robot”.

If you want to know more about the robot, read the paper that was published in Science Robotics recently.

Well, do you think this invention will be used for future iterations? Let us know below!

One Piece is getting a live-action series from Netflix

Cross your hearts and hope that it’ll be a good one

Written by Aqil Nasri

It has been officially confirmed by Netflix that One Piece will be getting a live-action series on their streaming platform!

The streaming company has approved a 10-episode live-action series based on the beloved manga and anime. The project will personally be overseen by One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda, in which he will take on the helm of executive producer for the show.

The series is a co-production between Netflix and Tomorrow Studios. Now, if you don’t know Tomorrow Studios, they are also the ones responsible for the upcoming Cowboy Bepop live-action series appearing on Netflix.

This news may come off as either the best news or the worse news for some fans. Especially after Netflix’s average attempt at doing Death Note back in 2017.

Well, fingers crossed that this will be a great adaptation; one that follows closely to its source material while still being able to convey their own personal touch on it.

Anyways, what do you guys think about this news? Let us know in the comments below!

8 Songs To Listen To When You’re Catching Feels

Written by: Aida Liyana

When you fall into the trap of infatuation, there are a few stages you go through before it goes into either a blooming relationship or complete shambles. These stages are only cinematic, dreamlike and easier to cope with when accompanied by these songs. This is your new go-to catching feels playlist.

1. Across The Multiverse – Dent May ft. Frankie Cosmos

This collaboration between Dent May and Frankie Cosmos is the sweetest combination you never knew you needed. The song literally brings you across the multiverse with their dreamy vocals that turn a glum star-crossed love story into a magical recognition of its nature.

Sometimes when you meet someone who is out of your league, someone who seems too good to be true, you feel like you could never belong to them because they’re almost unreal that you wonder if they came from a different multiverse. This song touches the collision between two very different worlds that have found their way to one another.

2. Can You Tell – Ra Ra Riot

One of the earliest singles of the American indie-rock outfit is 12 years old and it is a timeless jam well-fitted for the one who pines. Ra Ra Riot is famous for their ‘baroque pop’ music, a kind that combines rock music with elements of classical music.

The uncertainty that comes with pining for someone may overwhelmed us, in the way that we become restless due to constantly wondering if they would ever reciprocate our feelings, or wondering if we should even invest in such a gamble. This song explains the anxiety you feel when you are around them, yet at the same time maintaining your cool while at it. It is a constant plea of some form of sign for you to decide whether you want in or not before it’s too late.

3. Don’t Delete The Kisses – Wolf Alice

Wolf Alice’s hit single that came about in 2017 is the epitome of modern dating that is riddled with thoughts that keep us up through the night. It depicts how fast-paced this modernized, media-ridden life has been, and how it affects our relationships. The constant theme of the song is the certainty of doubt that comes with the start of every relationship — how even though you have gone out on dates, and you have talked for days, you could never really be sure because the other person might have one foot out the door still.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqxE-zppu30

The contemplation goes from Ellie Rowsell doubting “What if it’s not meant for me, love” in the beginning of the song, which is later followed by “Me and you were meant to be in love” at the end of it clearly portrays how modern love pushes you to let go of your inhibitions despite the odds.

4. Chateau – Angus and Julia Stone

The best thing about this song is that the composition is made to feel like you’re ascending into a magical, summery dimension with your lover by your side. Angus Stone’s airy vocals that we’re introduced to in the beginning expresses one’s willingness to go the extra mile to make their loved one happy. It is then paired with Julia Stone’s harmonies to amplify such expression nonchalantly, just like any other Angus & Julia Stone songs.

“Every day the weekend, I’m tryna be your best friend. Trying just to figure it out” aren’t we all just winging it when it comes to the start of seeing someone? This is the stage where we just look forward to being in the presence, and we start spending a lot of time with them, gambling our way into what we perceive to be the start of a love story. And the feeling seems to be mutual! So you start integrating them into your life not knowing what the future holds.

5. Hello Sayang – Pastel Lite ft. Naza The Times

Hello Sayang is Pastel Lite’s latest single from their first ever fully Malay-language album ‘Pop Bilik Tidur’. The song portrays a conversation between 2 lovers who are currently far apart and are counting days of when they will see each other again.

It is a constant exchange of reassurances that distance could never hold you apart. The anxiety of being away from the person you’re into can be overwhelming and time seems to fly so slow when they’re away. So watch out, when missing them starts to overwhelm you.. you know you’re already knee deep into the relationship/whatever ship you’re on with them. Watch the music video here.

6. Let Me In – Bil Musa ft. Alex Ungku

This is where the realisation comes – that you’re starting to become vulnerable with them. This song tells a story about a person wanting to let the other into their safe space, but is scared of the thought of losing their grip on their own vulnerabilities.

This collaboration between Bil Musa and Alex Ungku fleshes out their individual abilities as singer-songwriters even more. The indie-RnB feel to it is strengthened by the melancholic lyrics, “I really wanna let you in, but I don’t know if it’s the right thing to do.”

7. Burning – Maggie Rogers

Maggie Rogers, an American singer-songwriter was discovered by Pharrell in 2016 at a Masterclass of his she attended. Burning is a song from her debut album ‘Heard It In The Past Life’ that was released last year. This song is the epitome of the fire-y feeling in your bones when you are in love.

Maggie’s energetic delivery of the song really makes you feel like you have overcome all sorts of insecurities and doubts to take a step further and enjoy being in love. This is a song well-suited for you if at the end of those constant questions and worries about the other person’s willingness to invest, the feelings are found to be mutual and both of you are ready to take it to the next step.

8. Fuck Modern Love – Nasty Cherry

Nasty Cherry is an all-girl, alt-rock outfit assembled by Charli XCX through the Netflix docu-series cum reality show, ‘I’m With The Band: Nasty Cherry’. This song is an expression that is laced with frustrations towards modern love, as the title explicitly portrays. The inevitable pain when you take part in this little game may consume you in the harshest way – and this song depicts just that.

‘I’m feeling a little bit mad so I wanna go fast today, I’m gonna get in my car, gonna drive in the other way, I’m screaming, “Fuck it,” to modern love’. So if your love is not reciprocated, this song is the perfect song for you to be heart broken to while still maintaining your cool.
