adidas Teases Its Next Collaboration With Beyonce

After announcing a deal with adidas last April, the Queen of the world is ready to unveil her first major collaboration in conjunction with her brand, Ivy Park, showcasing plenty of key pieces that focuses on what looks to be a more athleisure centric line up.

Apart from the apparel, three silhouettes also make up the colelction, including a Burgundy Ultraboost 1.0, Nite Jogger, and what looks to be a Samba Creeper. Speaking to Elle, Beyonce said this, “It incorporates my personal style and expands that to include something for everyone. I love experimenting with fashion, mixing high and low, sportswear with couture, even masculine and feminine. This new line is fun and lends itself to creativity, the ultimate power.”

She also stated that it won’t be a women centric collection, rather it is a unisex one, with main garments done up in men’s sizes as well.

“I focused on designing a unisex collection of footwear and apparel because I saw so many men in Ivy Park. The way they have embraced the brand is an unexpected gift. I appreciate the beauty of gender-neutral clothing and breaking the so-called fashion rules. I took a chance on myself when I bought my company back. We all have the confidence in us to take chances and bet on ourselves.”

5 Underrated Films That Were Horribly Overlooked In 2019

Written by Harris

As we enter the dawn of 2020, we were left with so many amazing films in the last decade, especially in 2019. From Parasite starting a fire in the Asian movement in Hollywood, to the much anticipated return of Martin Scorcese with gangster-thriller film, The Irishman. On top of that, there is so much more great films that came out last year but was overshadowed by those bigger ones. Here is a list of great underrated films from 2019 that should get the attention they deserve.

  1. Fly by Night

I’ll start off the list with a local film that didn’t get enough love from the public when it came out about a year ago; Fly by Night directed by a first-time director Zahir Omar. The film tells a tale of a family of taxi drivers uses the service as a front for an extortion racket as they target wealthy passengers that they picked up from the airport. Tai Lo (Sunny Pang) and Sai Lo (Fabian Loo) are brothers that commit crimes in order to pay off their debts. Things get too hot when one of them decides to cooperate with one of the victims into blackmailing, while a corrupted policeman Inspector Kamal (Bront Palarae!) and his goons are desperately trying to capture Tai Lo’s dirty job until he realizes that there are more into it for himself. I feel like this movie got outshined by One Two Jaga, since both of these movies duel with the same subject matter. In my opinion, Fly by Night worth the time to watch and is one of the best local made neo-crime thrillers of all time!

  1. The Farewell

As much as how Parasite created a buzz in Hollywood as being one of the finest Asian films that has ever came to surface, The Farewell is another that might have the same impact depending on what you’re looking for. Directed by Lulu Wang, this film is about how in Chinese culture, it is not appropriate to tell your elders that they’re dying; Instead they make a big family gathering in respect of celebrating their lives. Awkwafina showcased a ground-breaking performance in the film as she had to lie to Nai Nai, her beloved grandmother about her health condition. This film is packed with love, sadness, frustration; It’s definitely a rollercoaster of emotions that fits the tone of the whole story. In my opinion, The ending was a bit dense in terms of what the characters’ future holds, but it will go down in the list of memorable films from the last decade.

  1. Booksmart

Booksmart is one of those films that you don’t see as much often anymore these days. The story of two high school girls who are about to graduate as they planned out to have the craziest time of their lives during the final days of class. Directed by the incredible Olivia Wilde and starring two of the upcoming stars in Hollywood; Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein. The way this coming-of-age comedy film was structured is pretty interesting and very rare to see it being produced well ever since other coming-of-age films that came out in the last ten years were commonly mediocre. It precisely captures the essence of being free and innocent before adulthood comes to haunt, which is fairly relatable with everyone. Despite having at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, this film didn’t get much into conversations of the greatest films of 2019 and it fits to be in this list.

  1. Jojo Rabbit

It’s a criminal this Jojo Rabbit didn’t get into the mainstream conversation despite it was directed by the talented Taika Waititi, fresh off the Marvel’s razzmatazz. The plot of the story is a bit weirdly convoluted but bear with me; Jojo is an insecure German boy who then later discovers that his single mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their attic. To add more to the weirdness of the story, he has an imaginary friend that hypes him up and guides him in making decisions, and that friend is Adolf Hitler (also played by Taika Waititi!). The story moves forward as Jojo must confront his blind nationalism as World War II proceeds to rage on. The story is jam-packed with witty jokes, love lessons and the importance of bravery to finally be the best version of yourself.

  1. The Last Black Man in San Francisco

I’ll finish off the list with the most overlooked in the bunch, A24’s The Last Black Man in San Francisco. This film debuted at 2019’s Sundance Film Festival and since then have been receiving a lot of positive reactions from the audience. The plot revolves around an African-American named Jimmie and his best friend Mont attempt to salvage a house built by Jimmie’s grandfather. Later on, the story propelled them on a heart-breaking journey that relates them to their past, as it might put their friendship into a clutter and sense of belonging in the place they call home. The mix between the use of visual poetry and realism makes the film feel like a surreal experience that orbits the idea of being an ordinary person who deserves the best for himself. A lot of people can relate well with the characters in this film, and the narrative is not as complex as you might expect despite the subject matter.

5 Best Shows To Binge On Netflix Right Now

Written by Aqil Nasri

Say it’s the weekend, and you don’t have anything to do. You’re too lazy to go out and be social with anyone right now. So, instead, you decide to order in, wear that comfy sweatpants that you always do, and turn on Netflix for a session of binge-watching. But wait, you flip and flip between different shows, you still have no idea what the heck you’re going to watch. The foods getting cold, and the night’s not getting any younger.

If you’ve somehow stumbled across this article, then you’ve come to the right place my friend! Below are my top 5 best shows that I recommend anyone to watch.

1) Sex Education

You won’t find a raunchier and bare-it-all opening scene other than Sex Education. The show purposely opens with two teens having awkward and clearly unsatisfying sex. In a way, this thematically explains to us what the overall show is about (humans and their sex lives). The show stars the very gawky Otis (Asa Butterfield) as he trudges through high school while having some personal problems of his own (he can’t masturbate). To top it all off, his mother (Gillian Anderson) is a sex therapist, which just adds the irony for Otis.

Personally, the whole show is a refreshing take on teenage drama, and it takes a serious but comedic approach to how teenagers are coping with this weird time in their lives. Also, Season 2 of Sex Education is just around the corner (January 17) so what better time to binge-watch this show other than now.

2) Black Mirror

The sci-fi series first started on Channel 4, but it garnered immense worldwide reputation after appearing on Netflix. Created by Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, Black Mirror is an anthology of what could go wrong when technology’s too advanced to the point where it can potentially go awry for everyone involved. The dark underlying tone of the series can really mess with audiences sometimes, as the events being portrayed are not too far from reality.

Currently, there are 5 seasons on air, plus an interactive movie called Bandersnatch available on Netflix. If it’s your first time ever watching the show however, I suggest you initially skip the first episode of the first season. Go and watch the rest first, then come back to watch the first episode. You’ll thank me later.

3) Living with Yourself

Who doesn’t know Paul Rudd right? You know, the guy who featured on Friends for a while and is literally the Ant-Man? Okay, so now, imagine that there’s two of him at once.

This quirky comedy shows what happens if a guy decides to go to a shady spa and clone himself. Miles (Paul Rudd) has to literally compete with Miles (also played by Paul Rudd), who’s more perfect than the original Miles in almost every way. The show is hilarious in every sense of the word, but it also manages to maintain a sense of suspense as audiences will have trouble deciding which Miles to root for.

4) The Good Place

Upon first glance, I didn’t know what to make of this show. I thought to myself, “It’s a show about a girl who died and went to heaven? How good can it be?” Well, was I wrong in understating the brilliance of The Good Place, as the show has personally proven to me why it’s a must watch series for anyone out there. This comedy series is probably one of the best shows to ever come out on TV since recent years. Kristen Bell is supremely brilliant as an ignorant lady who deservedly don’t belong in Heaven, but somehow got mistakenly got sent there. Ted Danson also carried his weight, as he was a really good addition to the show.

5) The Witcher

Netflix’s latest TV series is currently making waves all across the world, even dethroning the sensation Disney+ hit, The Mandalorian, to take the spot as one of the most viewed TV series right now. Based on Andrzej Sapkowski famous The Witcher novels, the series follows Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) as he makes his living as a monster hunter throughout the world. The overarching plot of the series ties-in closely with the novels, so this makes the series true to life as envisioned by the original creator.

5 Things You May Not Know About Chinese New Year

Written by Aqil Nasri

Chinese New Year is inching ever closer, so what better way to better prepare for the upcoming celebration then by arming yourself with some knowledge that may be questioned to you by nosy aunts or uncles (It’s annoying I know).

Here are 5 facts and myths that some of you may or may not know!

1) It Is Also Known As The Spring Festival

Besides being called Chinese New Year, most people in China call it as Chunjie, which also means the Spring Festival. People welcome spring and also all the harvests that come along with it. It is also a signification of new beginnings and a fresh new start for most people.

Usually, the start of spring happened between the 4th to 18th of February, but this number usually changes depending on the year, as the Lunar Calendar can range from January 21st to February 20th.

2) It Is Celebrated By Almost 1/5 of The World’s Population

Okay let’s do the math. There are about 7.7 billion people on Earth right now. So, when 7.7 billion is divided by 5, you’ll get approximately 1.50 billion people. That’s 1.50 billion people out of 7.7 billion celebrating Chinese New Year on a yearly basis! That number alone is super huge, making the yearly Chinese New Year celebrations one of the biggest and most celebrated festivals ever.

3) The Annual Chinese New Year Festival Causes The World’s Largest Annual Migration

Chinese New Year is also known as the time for family reunions and gatherings. So, typically, almost everyone that’s celebrating the festival will tend to follow through with the act of going back to their family homes, especially the ones who are living away from their family and relatives.

As such, every time Chinese New Year comes by, the roads and trains will be fully packed with people trying their best to go back in time. In China especially, this type of migration is known as the Spring migration or Chunyun. Also, the earliest train tickets that you can buy in China is 60 days before, so this literally leads to a mad dash of who can click the fastest.

4) Some Hire Fake Boyfriends / Girlfriends To Take Home To Meet Their Parents

For some people, the pressure to settle down and get married can be tremendous, especially for the ones who have that one nosy aunty, or a mom who keeps on pestering you about when you’re going to get married.

That’s why some have resorted to desperate actions by hiring fake boyfriends / girlfriends in hopes of appeasing their relatives and avoiding those annoying questions again. There are even some websites that actually provide the service of renting out a boyfriend / girlfriend, with the prices averaging at about RM66 per day.

5) The Celebration Also Plays Host To The Largest Annual Fireworks Usage In The World

In the single hour around midnight beginning of Chinese New Year, no other country anywhere else sees this much of fireworks lighted, as the country produces close to 90% of the world’s fireworks. The story behind the mass litting of fireworks stems from the lore of scaring evil spirits away, as the flashes and bangs of the firecrackers supposedly frightens the demons and evil ghosts.

Now though, setting off fireworks has largely been curbed due to pollution concerns, but you’ll find the occasional firecrackers popping off in the morning every now and then.
