5 Local Designers You Should Know

Since it’s the midst of Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week, we want you to know more about the local talents in Malaysia. Although KL is no fashion centre like Paris and London, our country’s fashion talents are actually growing in amount. Not to mention famous designers who have made it to fame, these young fashion designers that we are about to list down here are building up their reputation. Here it is :

1) Motoguo

Moto Guo is a Malaysian-based menswear designer with a label launched in 2013. His debut and graduation collection, “Out Like A Light” featured a delightful assortment of designs that are telltale signs of his identity; wacky yet artful. This design was also inspired by his own life as a kid and from sleep. Moto Guo also chooses to have his own work to speak for itself.

2) Kittie Yiyi

Growing up in a small town in Puchong, Kittie Yiyi’s design is very much alike her personality. It’s all about the fun, colours and excitement. This designer never limits herself from finding inspirations for her collection and is always ready to explore the world which is mysterious to her.

3) Tengku Syahmi

Being crowned The Most Promising Designer at year 2009 M-IFA, this young designer has since been getting much attention. Tengku Syahmi has also been collaborating with other designers. This young designer now has his very own showroom selling his own pieces and is located at D7 Sentul East Kuala Lumpur.

4) Man Chien

Born in a family with artistic background, Man Chien was exposed to art making at a young age. Her passion in art was developed since childhood where she spent time sketching in the nature and visiting art gallery. Being awarded The Most Promising Designer of the Year, 2011 and Next Generation Fashion Awards, 2012, Man Chien’s works are characterised as being imaginative, with undoubtedly original stunt, not without paying attention to practical details.

5) Justin Chew

This talented gentleman started in fashion as a stylist’s assistant, working on magazine shoots and campaigns. He also worked at a production house to develop his skill as a designer further. This designer has kept us on our toes ever since he debuted in 2010 at the Malaysian International Fashion Week 2010. Getting his inspiration mostly from movies and songs, Justin’s collection is indeed very unique.

 

Star Wars Immortalized in Pewter

In collaboration with the Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia, Royal Selangor will be launching a collection to commemorate one of the most successful movie franchises in history and a worldwide popular culture phenomenon, STAR WARS. The first batch of the collection which will be released this 20th of August consists of Limited Edition 8-inch popular figurines of Darth Vader, Han Solo, and Princess Leia, all priced at RM1060. Complementing those 3 are smaller 4-inch figurines of Yoda (RM318), the Stormtrooper (RM371), and also Boba Fett (RM371). Accompanying the figurines is a diorama of a rancor monster in his pit, rearing to attack Luke Skywalker which is a classic scene from Return of the Jedi, priced at RM3180.

For the casual fans of Star Wars, there will also be a pair of Stormtrooper and Boba Fett tumblers (RM212), Darth Vader and C-3PO mugs (RM402.80), Millenium Falcon and snowspeeder shaped USB flash drives (RM238.50), a Death Star trinket box (RM371) and also Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance cufflinks (RM201.40). The first line of the collection will be officially previewed this 20th of August 2015, 4PM at LG1 Pyramid Concourse, Sunway Pyramid.

Team Masses had an exclusive access to get a sneak peak and inside knowledge of the upcoming Royal Selangor x Star Wars Limited Edition pewter collection which will be officially released this 20th of August 2015, 4PM at LG1 Pyramid Concourse, Sunway Pyramid. We managed to talk to the Executive Director of Royal Selangor Marketing Division, Chen Tien Yue, about the whole story behind the making of the collection.

Chamber Music with Ensemble Koschka

Ensemble Koschka, a chamber classical music ensemble was formed in 2008 by Jascha Yasufumi Shimano, former Music Director-Conductor of the Penang State Symphony Orchestra & Chorus. Since it’s beginning, Ensemble Koschka has performed numerous concerts in Penang with the goal of promoting the local classical music scene. The ensemble has also been on tour to perform in Japan since 2010, performing a combination of classical music and arrangements of Malaysian folk songs. Yuna Returns to Malaysia

Enchanting vocalist, Yunalis Zarai or commercially known as Yuna is set to perform live this 16th of October at Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The exclusive one-night-only concert is organized by Livescape Asia, with an expected 3,000 attendees. The sensational Malaysian singer-songwriter is known for her unique authentic fusion of contemporary pop, acoustic folk and soulful R&B music.

Made In Malaysia

Once again, the people from The Alphabet Press is going to impress us. If you have no idea of what letterpress is, it’s basically a technique of relief printing using a printing press. On this coming weekend, they will be having a sharing session on their letterpress journey, live in-store letterpress demonstration, hands-on printing experience and many more. It will be a great chance to meet the printmaker and see the presses up close. Unlike many years before when jeans is just jeans, we now have so many choices that leave us indecisive. So, here it is. The type of jeans fitting that you all can get confused with. 1) The Classic Fit

Being the most standard and classic type of jeans, the classic fit is just a pair of normal jeans with no specific fitting to any part of the body. It will just fit like how a normal jeans will fit. It is cut loose throughout giving enough room to move comfortably.

RECAP: DC Shoes TRASE.YOURS Malaysia

DC Shoes TRASE.YOURS Malaysia design competition was held last week at Hundred% where more than 20 submitters including local graffiti artists and personalities took part in the competition to be crowned champion for Malaysia’s edition and also walk away with RM5000. The winner of the night was Jessica Lim, a form 5 student from SMK Subang Jaya.
