SSK feat. Faizal Tahir – “Bawah 3000” (Official Lyric Video)

“..ukur baju di badan
nak lebih dari itu,
boleh jadi tiga suku
bila bawah 3000..”

The brainchild of DJ Jocular, NBE, and Saph; SSK or Serius Selamba Krew just released a new single entitled “Bawah 3000” which features singer-songwriter, Faizal Tahir. The idea behind the track is about ones simply trying to survive in life with the income of only RM3000 per month. It all came about when an article released by a local newspaper a few years back saying that gaining RM3000 and below per month can be considered as “urban poverty”. Listen to the song below:

The Borak-Borak Sessions: Moe of Malaya Co.

The brand has been in the works for almost a year, and as of tomorrow, hosted by the good guys of The Third Culture, Malaya Co. will be officially launching their first ever product in Malaysia. But before that, we had the opportunity to have a little “digital” borak-borak session with Moe, one of the co-founders and creative director of Malaya Co. to get to know him better and also to get a bit of background about the brand itself. Enjoy!

R0020696

Before we take this interview further, let’s get to know you better. What’s your name? What do you do? How old are you? What’s your favourite food? Which part of Malaysia are you from?

Tengku Muhammad Shah but call me Moe, 24.

I don’t think I can live without Nasi Lemak. I try to make it here in London once a month. Love that sambal! I’m actually not from Malaysia but from Singapore. Although I did spend a considerable amount of time in KL during a summer internship to fall in love with the city!

What was that light bulb moment for you that made you want to start Malaya Co.?

MALAYA started out as my Final Year Project with University of the Arts London sometime in August 2014. The project was to create a brand with the concept of being free. I did a little bit of research and found out that the word MALAYA actually associated with freedom in Tagalog. But it would have still been a concept if not for my partners, Joshua & Shahida who has made this a realization.

What is the hardest part about starting up something like this?

Well… It is hard starting up because there isn’t really a book to read that shows you a step by step module you can follow but you figure it out yourself along the way. Even my uni didn’t teach me that….. but Alhamdulillah I have been blessed with a lot of guidance and support from my family back home, especially my dad who he himself is an entrepreneur. But I think the hardest is yet to come.R0020694

Out of all the things to start up, why watches? Was it something that you’ve always been into?

Funny enough when the idea of MALAYA came up, I was thinking of the first product. I remembered sitting alone at this mamak stall in Singapore waiting for Joshua so we could lepak. We were supposed to meet at 4PM but I couldn’t remember how late josh was but I remember I didn’t have a watch on me to tell the time, and that was when we started conceptualizing for the [419120]. 419120 is actually the postcode of the mamak stall in Singapore.

What are your plans for the brand? Internationally and locally in Malaysia.

Well we have already begin prototyping our next product which we plan to get crowd-sourced. As much as we want to build a brand we rather build a community. I would be moving to Malaysia where I plan to work with other local creatives on this next project. As much as London is a wonderful city, I rather be somewhere I can get Nasi Lemak at 3am in the morning.

Personally, what is the cool factor about Malaya Co. and how do you think it stands out from the rest of the other watch brands?

Well MALAYA Co. is not a watch brand but we are a brand that provides the freedom of option drawing inspirations from military functionality and industrial minimalism. So yeah?

Tell us one fact about yourself that most people don’t know.

I rather keep that fact to the masses not knowing….(pun was very much intended)

Last question, and we ask this question to everyone we interview, if you were stopped by the police here in Malaysia for speeding, would you “Tolong or Saman?”

Take the saman. I don’t think anyone should be bought. Its degrading to their worth. But I know i will ‘forget’ to pay the saman.

Is The NEW BALANCE M1300JP2 Really Worth RM1,099?

Print

The pair was first launched in 1985, and when it was released, there were a lot of commotion (in the modern day, we call it HYPE) caused by the pair. A few reasons was because New Balance billed it as “The very best running shoe ever made”, which was very hard to deny back then because it featured the most superior craftsmanship of that time, and it was praised by runners for having the best cushioning (New midsole tech + Vibram Sole). Another reason for the commotion was New Balance also admitted that the pair would “Costs more than any running shoe you’ve probably ever owned” because of its price tag of $130, which is a price that is totally unheard for a pair of running shoe back in those days.

IMG_8547

The shoe was positioned as a luxury item. Because of that, many people wanted it, but couldn’t afford it. To make matters “worst”, not many were produced back in 1985. This led to the shoe gaining a huge cult following around the world, especially in Japan, where the shoe retailed at around USD350, and after a few years you could see deadstock pairs being auctioned off at USD1000 per pair (back in those days it was considered an insane price to pay for a pair of shoe) even when they were not wearable due to sole crumbles.

Due to the high demand for the shoe in Japan, it was reissued as the New Balance 1300JP in 1995. Since then, there has been a reissue in 2000, 2005, 2010, and now in 2015.

IMG_8541

Fast forward to this day, we ask the question “is the 1300JP still the Very Best Running Shoe ever made?” Of course not. That is something Nike and adidas would gladly answer as they fight over the coveted title of “Best Ever Running Shoe”. “Then why should I pay RM1099 for this pair of running shoe that isn’t THE BEST?” you ask. Besides the fact that it was produced in very limited quantities and that it is only reissued once every 5 years, one of the main reason why this shoe was such a big hit back in 1985 all the way till today, and why people would gladly pay USD1000 at auctions for a pair of unwearable shoe, is because of what the shoe stands for. It is a shoe that was made without any worry of how much it would cost, without worry of whether people could afford it, or whether it would fly off the shelves once it was launched.

At that time, New Balance made the 1300JP with the purest of intentions, and that is to make THE BEST shoe ever. Period.

What you are paying for is the heritage. The meticulous effort New Balance put in to making a shoe of pure craftsmanship, and the painstaking measures New Balance has taken in maintaining that heritage of craftsmanship in each reissue. Especially this particular 2015 reissue as it is said to be the closest to the OG pair from 1985.

Check out picture below to see the difference of each reissue compared to the OG pair. *Picture by New Balance*

Well, at the end of the day, if you’re not emotionally moved by what the shoe stands for and what we wrote isn’t convincing enough to make you want to take your wallet out and cash out RM1099 for a pair of shoe, then we will use facts and figures to convince you. Just go on eBay, type in “New Balance 1300JP2” and see how much it is being resold for. An average price of USD500 = RM1900. Almost a 100% increase in value. Now who says sneakers aren’t good investments?
