Is BOOST Overplayed?

We all remember BOOST. The TPU bubble that provides class leading cushioning and rebound, the technology that was a Red Dot award winner, and subsequently, the darling in any sneaker collection. BOOST had truly taken over the sneaker world with the introduction of the Ultraboost, NMD, and preceding that, the Energy BOOST during its heyday back in 2015 all the way to the early 2017s. It also paved the way for some of the most highly sought after collaborations from almost every retailer imaginable, and catapulted Adidas into the number 1 spot, side stepping Jordan Brand in 2nd place.

It’s a different story now though. The scene is now back into retro sneakers, with Jordan releasing archive versions of its Air Jordan shoes, even bringing Tinker Hatfield’s prototype sketches to life, and Nike reviving models and giving them a breath of fresh air from the Air Max catalog. Even PUMA has had a blast reigniting the Suede with numerous collabs including MAC Cosmetics and MCM. BOOST then, is nowhere to be seen in this day and age, almost as it has been dusted off by a giant sweeper, never to be seen again.

We have to ask exactly. How did the giant get slain by the very thing it sought to surpass?

Let’s talk about the origins of the tech, first and foremost: It’s not Adidas’ proprietary technology. The TPU pellets that make up the midsole of every BOOST shoe in existence are actually manufactured by BASF (Badische Anilin & Soda-Fabrik) in Germany, one of the largest chemical manufacturers in the world. Adidas merely bought the license to the technology and brought it over into the world of footwear. The BOOST gets its unique shape from fusing hundreds of pellets together – rather than just one big slab of foam or TPU doing the bulk of the absorbing, the smaller pellets allow for a more reactive cushioning as they are individually compressed and rebounded much more instantaneously than one big piece. The pellets too don’t lose compression over time, unlike EVA built midsoles, which are more susceptible temperature changes and lose its rebound effect overtime.

Initially, the product didn’t really sell well. In fact most of the new wave of BOOST fans know about the tech through the NMD, and subsequently the Ultraboost, but many back then didn’t know that it all originated from the Energy Boost, a trainer focused more towards performance rather than lifestyle. However, fashion forward heads took notice, and started to adopt the shoe slowly into their rotation. It wasn’t until when Kanye performed at a concert wearing triple white Ultraboosts that the whole scene practically went into meltdown and hunted for a pair to rock.

As a result, the triple white versions proceeded to sell out the next day after the concerts.

While the Ultraboost has its roots derived in performance, the NMD was a direct answer, and in some ways, an uncompounded sequel to the ailing Nike Roshe in the lifestyle segment. Crafted with high-end materials in Adidas’s catalog (one piece Primeknit construction and BOOST), the shoe arguably kickstarted the whole BOOST hype that lasted 2 years, spawning numerous high profile collabs from the likes of Hypebeast, High Snobiety, Solebox, Reigning Champ, Nice Kicks, Packer, MASTERMIND, BAPE, and A Ma Maniere across two models.

The flurry of collabs and hype surrounding the two, coupled with star power from the likes of Kanye and Pharrell immediately flooded the market with BOOST, and soon, oversaturated it. This sort of model works in the short term. You get a shit ton of money immediately, as you’re raking in the sales from whatever it is the factory spews, but over a long period of time, the risk of killing the silhouette increases, as well as significant damage to the brand itself. BOOST has now become too ubiquitous, and is beginning to be frowned upon as the market shifts back to the classics until the brand opens with another big invention. The hype train has pulled out of BOOST station, and Adidas have got some very big shoes to fill.

Though, they just might have another up its sleeve.

Enter the Futurecraft 4D, Adidas’ first foray into 3D printing. While it’s no industry secret that the Futurecraft retails for a bomb (approximately RM 1250) and resells for easily 4-5 times the price, there is undoubtedly a glimpse of hope for the brand as it looks out to step out of the hole it dug with BOOST. Yohji Yamamoto has already picked up on the tech and implemented it in its own designs, and reception from the masses are encouraging enough for Adidas to tease us with a General Release version.

To dismiss BOOST altogether is to dismiss a huge chunk of sneaker history altogether. The Adidas hype did managed to send shockwaves across the scene and toppled the long time king from its perch, taking its place on the top, albeit for a relatively short span of time. Although, the glaring problem here is that Adidas didn’t one-up the others by innovating new tech, it merely introduced an existing one into a market that has never seen it before, but if the brand plays it cards right, Futurecraft could prove to be the next foundation of stilts for the brand to stand on.

atmos “We Love Nike” Pack Comes For #TeamSwoosh

Atmos is releasing a “We Love Nike” pack which consist of an Air Max 1, an Air Max 90 and two different pairs of Air Max 95’s. The idea behind the whole pack is to pay homage to sneaker collectors and vintage Nike shoe boxes with the graphics of walls filled to the brim with Nike shoe boxes on the uppers of the silhouettes. What seemed to be only exclusive to Atmos, the “Jade” colorway of the Air Max 95 will be available for purchase at other retailers as well besides Atmos.

Fortunately for us, Nike Malaysia has announced that they will be releasing three pairs from the pack, the Air Max 1, Air Max 90, and the Air Max 95 in the Bright Crimson colorway, on their online store, on the 1st of June. The retail price for all three will range from RM519 to RM669. Nikeheads, will you be copping?

Nike Is Dropping 2 New ‘Be True’ Silhouettes

Comprising Of The Zoom Fly and Vapormax Plus

I don’t think we’ve had any official ‘Be True’ releases here as of yet, having missed out previously on silhouettes such as the Flyknit Racer, Vapormax, and most recently, the Air Max 270, we have finally been blessed with 2 drops, featuring the Zoom Fly and Vapormax Plus.

First off, let’s talk about the Zoom Fly. First thing you’ll notice is that the swoosh on the toe box has been reduced significantly to just a mini-swoosh. Swipe to the heel portion, a pink triangle dominates the lateral portion, while a rainbow flag takes up real estate on the medial side. Colour palette too has been reduced a minimalist state, featuring translucent white with tinges of blue on the toe box and tongue. Pink and blue heel stickers on the left and right respectively finish off the silhouette.

The Vapormax Plus takes a bolder approach to its colouring, featuring a gradient purple/maroon mesh upper dripped from the topside with a gloss black cage and mudguard, finished off with a rainbow coloured Vapormax unit.

You would notice a triangle, prominent on the Zoom Fly SP’s side and on the bottom of the Vapormax Plus’ unit, apparently carrying a hefty meaning behind the simple shape. The triangle was originally used to identify LGBTQ folks back in WWII, and then adopted by the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power for their “Silence=Death” campaign in the 80s.

The Nike Zoom Fly goes for around RM 549 while the Vapormax Plus retails for RM 749. Both silhouettes will be releasing on the 6th of June, 9AM local time. It’s time to be true with your feelings and cop a pair before they sell out.

Where To Cop The Converse Golf le Fleur Two Tone

We really think that the One Star is gonna get reiterated and much more known with Tyler’s rendition, cos right after the ‘Mono’ pack which dropped 2 months back, he’s already releasing the dual tone versions. As with all Golf le Fleur shoes, upper is done up in suede albeit in 2 colours, with the heel cap, flower motif, and eyelet fabric alternating with the primary. Thicker laces feature in this version of the pack as well as a monochrome outsole from the previously orange coloured ones.

4 colours are available at launch, ‘Pink/Orange,’ ‘Purple/Green,’ ‘Red/Blue,’ and our favourite, ‘Cotton Candy Blue/Pink.’

The Converse Golf le Fleur Two Tone is releasing this Friday, 1st of June, at Crossover Sunway, Converse Pavilion, and Converse KLCC for a price of RM 499 for a pair. We’d be a bit careful with the suede though, considering the regular abuse that Converse shoes go through. Y’all adding these to your rotation?

The Hoarder Series | Victor Chan

A seemingly discreet CEO of an event company has in his house, one of the largest collection of Jordans we’ve seen in some time. In this episode of Hoarders, we meet up with fellow Jordanhead, Victor Chan (IG: @blacktrix), as he talks us through his first Jordan love, his criteria when choosing a shoe, and his hardest cop yet, which isn’t what you expect it to be.

PUMA and SEGA Drops Not One, But Two RS-0 Collabs

You Wait For One, Then Two Come At Once

Previously, PUMA has teased its RS-0 Sonic collaboration at a pop-up in Berlin back in March, detailing the final product, but no dates were given as to when it will drop. We now have a confirmed date, and it releases on the 5th of June, worldwide.

Two editions of the RS-0 are scheduled to drop, one as we all know as the Sonic edition, and another not really seen: The Dr. Eggman sneakers.

Sonic’s rendition takes cues from the character himself, with the upper cladded from textured suede, mimicking the feel of Sonic’s blue fur and highlighted with a red outsole, symbolising his shoes. Level details are also present alongside the lateral and heel portion of the shoe, from the embroidered rings, to the checkerboard medial support and the 16-bit grass print on the heel.

Dr. Eggman’s colourway takes inspiration directly from the character himself and his mobile, ever present with an all red upper adorned with black and yellow caution stripes taken from his Eggmobile. Pebbled patent leather with microventilation perforations makes up the upper, coupled with a debossed PUMA formstrip and a Dr. Eggman head. His face and fireballs are debossed on the medial heel, while the gold rings are inserted into the lace. Footbed too features black and yellow caution stripes, and a metallic outsole takes cues from his scientific machinery. Both sneakers are packed in a special box inspired by the iconic Green Hill Zone.

A classic reboot following up with a classic series, reimagined into a future retro silhouette. The PUMA X SEGA RS-0 Sonic and Dr. Eggman will be available at PUMA Sunway Pyramid, Crossover, and Sole What, retailing for a price of RM 610 on the 5th of June. Let us know what you think of the collab down below.

Against Lab Collaborates With Pot Meets Pop To Define The “Chaos Standard”

Southeast Asia Represent

We don’t usually get cross country collaborations, especially in our small enclave of islands we call Southeast Asia, but when it happens, it’s almost always a good one, and Against Lab’s collaborative efforts with Indonesian denim label POT MEETS POP is no different from the others.

Dubbed the ‘Chaos Standard,’ the partnership fuses the best of both brands into a single capsule, combining AGAINST’s DNA into PMP’s stringent denim tailoring. Featuring graphics heavily inspired from Hong Kong gangster and martial arts films, the collection is adorned with features of neon lights, handcuffs, and finished off with the staple dragon.

The highlight of the capsule is the ensemble’s denim zip up work jacket and pants; unapologetically baggy and rugged, reminiscing the likes of gangster culture, fused with the cutting of the prison jumpsuit.

The ‘Chaos Standard’ collection is available to purchase at the iSetan Japan Store in Lot 10, but will soon be available in both Against Lab’s and PMP’s webstores soon.

How To Cop The Yeezy 500 Supermoon Yellow

YEEZY’s not stopping any time soon. Fresh right after the release of the ‘Blush,’ the ‘Supermoon Yellow’ gets a release date, dropping on the 9th of June as an E-Com exclusive.

For those who aren’t in the know, the YEEZY 500 represents another entry into the ‘Dad Shoe’ trend, featuring an upper composed of cow suede, premium leather and mesh with nubuck accents. Support and abrasion resistance is provided by a rubber wrap along the midsole of the foot, coupled with additional details like reflective piping around the lace eyelets that make it easier to spot in low-light conditions. adiPRENE+ (not BOOST) is the cushion of choice here, absorbing impact and optimizing rebound while a the sculpted outsole provides traction.

Y’all have to be quick though. The YEEZY 500 ‘Supermoon Yellow’ is priced at RM 950, and available to through a waiting room process at this link. Be quick, my fellow readers.

Graduate With The Air Jordan XI ‘Cap and Gown’

The Air Jordan XI has been a coveted cop for many, from the “Iridescent” colourway to the “Win Like 96,” but none looked much sleeker than the triple black editions. Released seven years ago, the triple black silhouette was shown as part of a collection that included other triple black renditions from its signature line, but it was never officially released to the public.

The materials too, feel premium. Donned up in patent leather, premium nubuck and a clear outsole, the signature line’s graduating class of 1995 returns with a black cap and gown.

The Air Jordan XI ‘Cap and Gown’ is available on the 1st of June, 9AM local time at Nike’s online store for approximately RM 1000. Y’all adding these to your collection?

PUMA’s Thunder Spectra Is Getting A Restock

Be Quick My Readers

The PUMA Thunder Spectra is getting a restock after previous run outs from PUMA’s own as well as Crossover and Sole What. In case you missed it, the Thunder Spectra is PUMA’s own entry into the Dad Shoe trend, inspired by previous Alexander McQueen collaborations, featuring a very sleek chunky midsole, and mesh top with partial colour blocking done up in suede.

Lookout at JD Sports for the restock at 3PM on the 24th of May, online and on JD’s own app. So get ready to refresh that page for your chance on copping the pair, because we suspect there won’t be that many.
