This old-school Australian dude has one of the most extensive and well preserved collection of bikes some dating back 200 years ago which has been preserved for the future generations to appreciate.

Each bicycle that James MacDonald has represents the evolution of the design and manufacturing of a bicycle, something like a historical catalogue. In this three minute video, you will be schooled by James about bikes to be considered a somewhat expert in it and it’s history. So kids, take out your pen and paper and take notes.

“Bicycles ain’t gonna stop, bicycles are here to stay. And the thing about bicycles, HAVE FUN!”

CheeseDenim Works: Non-Expiring Melts

IMG_0294

The Denim Culture in Malaysia is a growing thing. By denim culture, we do not mean the common jeans that you buy off Romp or Padini for RM79.90 during Mega Sales season. We’re talking about a culture where the public is more informed about what a good pair of jeans is suppose to be like, and why you pay the price you pay for ‘just a pair of jeans’.

CheeseDenim Works is one of the forefront runners in bringing up that culture, and educating people in the scene in the way of the Denimhead.

Having their jeans made mostly from Japanese Denim, special attention paid to detailing, a very signatory leather patch at the back of the jeans and a very limited run of 24 pieces per model are just some of the keys that make Cheese Denim a yummy non-expiring melt to have.

Joe’s Kitchen & Barbershop

Normally when you walk into a barbershop, you will be greeted by the smell of incense, not that it’s a bad thing, but it is just how it is. Also the barber that’s gonna be giving you a shave will most probably be donning a sarung and a shirt with the accompaniment of a Tamil or Hindustani song playing at the background.

That is not the case in Joe’s Barbershop. Smooth RnB or HipHop will be in the shop’s airwaves and the smell is filled with freshly baked pizzas from Joe’s Kitchen which is just right next door. The guy that’s gonna give you a hair cut or a shave will most probably have more swag then you. Reppin’ a pair Jordans on his feet, wearing snapbacks and shades while he cuts you up. Your hair I mean.

After you’re done with the chops, take a few steps next door to Joe’s Kitchen for some homemade American food. Pizzas, Mac’n’Cheese and floats are just some of the items that can be found on the menu. Besides the pasta, everything else is freshly made on the spot. Sinful meals, yet very irresistible.

Expect a long queue if you want to get your hair done on the weekends or after working hours, which speaks a lot about the quality of the barber’s cut. Our advice to anyone going there for the first time would be to write your name on the waiting list, and hop next door for a good meal while you wait.

SUE ME?

Sooooooooo…… as you all have heard, or in this case read, Supreme is suing Married To The Mob for a whopping $10 million in damages for using their logo, which Supreme has only just trademarked in March of this year after 20 years, in a ‘Supreme Bitch’ logo tee which was first release 10 years ago which was then re-released without consent from James Jebbia of Supreme who got pissed when a lot of people started asking him whether it was either a Supreme collab or an official Supreme merchandise and then proceeded to ask Leah about it which she then assured him that she would stop production of all products relating to the ‘Supreme Bitch’ which she at the end, did not do. Did we miss anything so far? Hope not.

Barbara Kruger, the artist who’s art is the ‘inspiration’ behind Supreme’s box logo, has come out in the open to comment about this whole thing as a “Clusterfuck of totally uncool jokers” and she also sarcastically commented that she is waiting for them to sue her for copyright infringement.

To make matters even more interesting, ANIMAL, a well known NYC website who is a supporter of Camp Leah and MTTM came out with a superb Supreme parody
t-shirt. Best part about it, they made the design available for download to the whole world wide web. The t-shirt has already been seen being worn at different parts of the world like Japan, UK, France, Italy and Korea to name a few.

Who is at fault? Who is infringing who’s copyright? Should Barbara Kruger just come out and sue both Supreme and MTTM? or is this just another one of those publicity stunt from both parties involved? We don’t have the answers. One things for sure, we’re chomping down popcorn with our asses half out of our seats.

Wolfgang Spring / Summer 2013 Collection

Ever wondered what’s the brand of that big WG tank top that guy or girl was wearing at FMFA or Urbanscapes? It’s Wolfgang! Normally, when one hears the word ‘Wolfgang’, one would associate it with Tyler The Creator’s ‘Golf Wang’ album or OFWGKTA which is short form for ‘Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All’ or a Filipino heavy metal band. But in fact, Wolfgang is very common German name and is pretty common around Europe too. Besides, the name has a very nice ring to it, so I guess who cares right? If it’s nice, it’s nice.

Although Wolfgang hasn’t been around for long in our local streetwear scene, they have manage to garner a pretty good following. Their minimalistic approach to streetwear and their simple yet elegant designs have definitely done well for them. Their new Spring / Summer 2013 collection has that same formula. Simple and elegant.

The Borak-Borak Sessions: SuKeats from WHEEL LOVE

This time, for our interview feature, we sat down with SuKeats, the co-owner of WHEEL LOVE to have a chat. Being an avid aggressive inline-skater himself and a very honest opinionated individual, be sure to check out the interview on his very honest views on the skating scene and also a little bit of Malaysian culture.

keat1

Can you give us a little bit of your background, and what you did before this?

I was in the advertising line from the year 2003 – 2009 and within these years I had been in a series of agency, even to the point of starting my own agency. Pretty much worked and done almost anything possible to be done in the advertising line. Towards the end of my journey in the advertising life, I and my co-owner, Wei Yeng, were already running Wheel Love as an online business on the side selling skating stuff, and also we printed our own t-shirts and sold them too. It was something very garage and very DIY, nothing big or fancy, but we enjoyed doing it. At that point I was 29 years old, did not like what I was doing in life, to the point of hating what I was doing. So me and Wei Yeng told ourselves, if we don’t start something now, after 30 it would be hard to do something.

What were the challenges faced when you were starting up WHEEL LOVE?

Money is always an issue, that’s a given, but we were very lucky to have the help of our parents and also savings. It wasn’t a lot but we manage to find a way to get through. Also during that time when we wanted to start up, it was pretty hard to get a loan.

In the skateboarding market, it is incredibly competitive, incredibly thin margins, and incredibly fickle minded customers that will go the extra mile just to save 10 ringgit. They will walk around the whole of Berjaya Times Square just to look at the exact same deck at different shops, maybe even go all the way to Subang, and after that head to PJ area, only to go back to Berjaya Times Square to buy it. It’s bad for the shop, that the margins are so low, but good for the kids on the street that the products are cheaper and easily accessible which in the end is good for the scene. I and my partner just had to learn how to deal with it in the beginning and tackle this issue in the right way.

As for the roller-blading market, it is a whole different ball game. Prior to WHEEL LOVE opening, there were no other shops carrying a proper aggressive inline-skate, so the people that inline-skate have that mentality that if you can’t get it here in Malaysia, just buy it online. And online we have to compete a lot with other online shops from overseas. Also another issue was that it is not a very cheap sport to start-up with. For example a skateboards cost around RM200 for a full deck, but for a pair of aggressive inline-skates, it would cost around RM600, so the real challenge back then was to educate the customers that come in to the shop why a pair of aggressive inline-skates cost the way it costs. Also at that point in time when we first started out, there were not many inline-skaters around too, which was one of the challenges to us, having to introduce it to customers and just educating them on what is inline-skating.

We are kinda making this question a compulsory random question to ask anyone we interview, TOLONG or SAMAN?

In all honesty, I would say tolong. It would cost me RM300 to pay for a speeding ticket, and if I can get away with it for only RM100, why not right? And I feel that RM300 doesn’t go anywhere, cause I won’t pay the summon anyway (LOL). How often do we Malaysians pay our summons? Yes he will take probably RM50 from me, and another RM50 from another person after, and a few more, and you may say it is a bad thing, but I know that cops are good guys, they just do what they do because they just have a really shitty pay for a really shitty job. And we all know it, that’s why we all put up with it.

If Robert Kwok, the sugar king, walk in with one million ringgit, and handed it to you, what would you do with it?

In Malaysia, we are pretty blessed with relatively cheaply priced skating products, so that means we have the right gear to get into the sport. BUT, we don’t have a proper skatepark, with proper people to train kids who want to get into it. I use to remember back then, there was an indoor skatepark in Midvalley Megamall, and I would say, because of that skatepark, the skating scene back then was much more active compared to now. The location of the skatepark was in a mall, it is indoor, so the weather will never be an issue and the staff there are always around to make sure things are okay, which made parents very comfortable with sending their kids there. So if I had that one million ringgit, I would open up something like that.

What problems do you think the skate scene is facing?

I think it is very much the mentality. We are very much defined by hate. I give you an example of what I mean, if I am a skateboarder, I will support ONLY skateboarding and HATE everything else. This hate has cause us to segregate each other, skate is skate, blade is blade, BMX is BMX, which is bad for the scene. At the end of the day, everyone uses the same obstacles in the skatepark, just the tools we use to overcome the obstacles are different. That’s why our shop’s name is called WHEEL LOVE, which pretty much speaks for itself and what our philosophy is about. But I’m glad that thankfully this hate thingy has slowly died down over the years and I hope it will eventually be ‘ALL SKATE, NO HATE’

What is your approach on streetwear?

As I did mention earlier, before the shop was around, we started out as a really DIY project, and we printed our own t-shirts and sold them on our own. We would go up to people and also to shops to ask them to buy our t-shirts, or whether we could consign it at their shops. So me and my partner, Wei Yeng, really know the feeling of being the little guy who is going around asking for help. So for those shops that did help us out and gave us a chance, we plan to do the same and help the next guy that come and ask for our help. Pestle and Mortar, The Swagger Salon and even Tarik Jeans all had their stuff in our shop back when they first started out, and we’re glad that they are now big and have moved on to start their own shop, and I’m glad that WHEEL LOVE had a hand in it.

What’s your best advice to anyone?

This is the motto of WHEEL LOVE, also for my life, STAY LEAN and STAY HUNGRY. A lot of shop owners, when things get slightly better for them, they start buying things they don’t really need, or spending money unwisely, and that isn’t staying lean. Most of the time, that’s when it start going bad. If you stay lean all the time, you will always stay hungry and focus towards your goal.

The Twin Towers

The Petronas Twin Towers is, undoubtedly the icon of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia. Every single tourist that step foot in our country, has to visit the twin towers and have at least one picture with it. We Malaysians on the other hand, have taken this beauty for granted. Its like we are a disgruntled cheating spouse that is bored of our relationship and have looked outside the marriage for excitement.

SO, to rekindle that spark of excitement in our marriage with our Malaysian icon, we took a stroll and acted as tourist in our own country. We went on a tour of the Petronas Twin Towers’ Sky Bridge and Observation Tower on the 86th floor. The entrance fee for the whole tour is only RM25 for anyone that owns a MYKAD, if not it would cost you RM80.

The view on both the Sky Bridge and Observation Deck is simply breathtaking and definitely worth the tour. If any of you who are reading this, and have never been on the tour, we definitely encourage you to go and experience it yourself in person, as the pictures does not do the real experience any justice.

Announcement: Stussy x A Bathing Ape x G-Shock “ILL COLLABORATION” Frogman Watch Winner

First off, before we announce the winner of the competition, we would like to take this opportunity to apologize for the technical issues that forced the website to be inaccessible for almost half the day which resulted in making it hard to vote. Also, after reading through some of the comments from our readers at the entry voting post, we realize that some of our readers were pretty unhappy with the way we ran the competition and how we changed from a ‘Most Creative Entry’ to a ‘Most Votes’ winning criteria. Once again, we would also like to apologize for that and take this opportunity to explain ourselves.

We made the change of the winning criteria is because, after much deliberation with the team at Masses, we realize that deciding which entry is the MOST creative out of everyone else, would not be a very nice thing to do as we ourselves were going to be the judges and it would seem very biased. On top of that, creativity is a VERY SUBJECTIVE thing, and by choosing which is more creative than the rest, would be indirectly saying that everyone else is less creative than the winning entry. Due to it’s subjectivity, choosing a winner would be something very unfair for us to do. We than came to an understanding that at that point, the voting system would be the safest and the best option in choosing a winner.

We also notice that in the comments section, a reader has said that our website was hacked until our server has crashed, another reader also said that the website was deliberately crashed in order to secure the top spot, whether done by us,Masses, or done by somebody who just wants to win that badly. We would like to clarify, that the real issue as to why the website was down for more than half the day, was because, the good guys of the server’s support department decided to perform some maintenance on this very ‘auspicious’ day seeing that it is the last day to vote and all. Here is the screencap pic of the email that was sent to us by the server’s support department.

maintain

We are not trying to make excuses, and we are definitely not trying to find another scapegoat to take the blame, we just want to be as honest and direct as we can possibly be with our readers, and to tell it as it is. That is why we have taken the time to explain what has happened and why we did certain things the way we did, in hopes that you, our readers, can accept it.

We would also like to say that we are new, still growing and definitely still learning, that’s why we appreciate your comments and opinions, and would like to thank each and everyone of you who took the time to comment and voice out your opinions. Continue to do so, as it would really help us to stay connected and to know what’s on our reader’s minds. Once again, we apologize to all our readers for all our faults and the inconvenienced caused and hope you all will continue to grow with us.

With that said, we would like to thank the Stussy Kuala Lumpur Chapter for sponsoring the STUSSY x BAPE x GSHOCK ‘ILL COLLABORATION’ Frogman Watch for this competition and we would like to congratulate entry #9 – Jayj Liew (Facebook name) on winning the STUSSY x BAPE x GSHOCK ‘ILL COLLABORATION’ Frogman Watch.
