10 Things You May Not Know About Karl Lagerfeld

Written by Sean Ho

Undisputedly the most influential fashion designer of the 21st century has past away on Tuesday morning at the age of 85. Best known for his work as the creative director of Italian fashion house Fendi and French house Chanel, Lagerfeld missed his first Chanel show in January, where he would close the show by coming on stage and giving a final bow, leading to industry heads being worried for the designer’s health. Unfortunately, he passed away in Paris at a hospital on Tuesday morning. Honouring the esteemed man’s legacy, we’ve compiled 10 things you may not know about the legend.

He has a fridge in his bathroom to keep his skincare

All because he wasn’t able to fit into Hedi Slimane’s collection. The diet was so successful, he decided to publish a book called ‘The Karl Lagerfeld Diet,’ which includes programs such as the ‘Spoonlight’ program, which he says ‘must be some sort of punishment’ in order for it to be effective.

10 Things You May Know About Nicol Ann David

Written by Sean Ho

A true legend to the game, Nicol Ann David is one of the most successful sports stars of our generation and has been breaking records after records during her career. The eight-time world champion has announced that she will retiring in June, 2019, bringing her successful career to an end. The 35-year-old is the most successful woman squash player of all time and spent an unprecedented nine years as world number one between 2006-2015.

Here are 10 things that you might not know about our national hero.

Born on August 26, 1983

Born in Penang, David is the daughter of a retired Malaysian Chinese school teacher of Hokkien Hakka descent and a Malaysian Indian engineer of Tamil origins. Despite this however, she grew up speaking English and Malay.

She’s Otherwise Known As The Duracell Bunny

One of her previous scouts, Ee Phoeh Hoon had this to say about her energy, “Even at that tender age, her strong point was her mental strength and ability to focus on the task at hand. When we do court runs, girls usually do 19-20 laps, and exceptionally strong boys can do 24. Nicol was the only girl who could manage 25.”

She Practically Grew Up With A Racket In Hand

Nicol first picked up the racket at age 5 in her hometown of George Town, Penang. She then continued taking regular lessons at the age of 8 and trained three times a week.

Both Her Siblings Are National Squash Players As Well

Her two sisters, Lianne and Cheryl, also competed in squash at the national level.

Bagged Her First World Championship At A Ripe Age Of 15

David’s biggest win during her early years was at Antwerp’s World Junior Championships, where she claimed her ‘World Junior Champion’ status at 15 years old. Not only that, she was also the youngest female athlete to win the world title, beating 3 athletes ranked Top 20 in the global ranking list.

7 Back To Back Titles

Nicol David knows no boundaries when it comes to achievements, having won seven world titles back to back from 2005-2011.

Plans To Establish A Squash Academy & Her Own Designing Firm

Nicol has plans to set up a squash academy And it will definitely be in line with her beliefs. On the other hand, Nicol also has an idea of starting her own designing firm.

She Initially Wanted To Become An Engineer

Nicol’s dream was following his fathers footsteps in becoming an engineer, but squash got the better of her once her talents were scouted, and the rest they say, was history.

A Net Worth Of RM 360 Million

For some odd reason, Nicol is rated as the richest athlete in Japan, but not to worry, she’s also practically the first one here in Malaysia. Only Lee Chong Wei comes second.

Still Holds The Record As The 1st Asian To Be Ranked Number 1

Nicol David is the first Asian in history to be ranked world number one in squash, and no one else has ever come close to that in a very long time.

Truly a queen, and befitting nothing less in the squash world. Nicol Ann David will officially hang her racket up in June, closing the book on what is the most legendary person to have ever graced squash. Thank you for your services Dato. You will be missed, and good luck in your future endeavours!

Nike Has Made A Shoe Capable Of Withstanding Malaysian Weather

If the Nike React Element had a baby with the ACG line, you’d end up with the ISPA React WR. And it’s exactly what you need for the urban commuter who walks and braves the urban terrain, always ready for the bright sun and the ever changing torrid rainstorm that hits when you least expect it to be.

You’d be wondering  then what the hell does ISPA mean, or what even it is. The ISPA line is the Special Projects’ division new baby. Standing for Improvise, Scavenge, Protect, and Adapt, the acronym is a mouthful when fully expanded, but the bottom line is that it’s a special sub division for the trials and tribulations of urban commuting. Think ACG Komyuter, but much more sleeker, varied, and stylish. Definitely better suited for your day to day travels, while being waterproof to deflect any rain and puddles keeping your feet absolutely dry at all times.

Three colours of the Nike ISPA React WR drops on the 23rd of February for an approximate price of RM 776 on Nike.com.

McDonald’s Offer French Fry Carton Alternative To Balenciaga’s Square Toe Mules

I think McDonald’s has just been saying what we all would’ve secretly wanted to say, that Balenciaga’s square toe leather mule in red looks very similar to the Golden Arches’ French Fry box.

The one that kickstarted it all though, is McDonald’s Swedish account saying that if they get 103,342 likes, they’ll turn it into actual shoes with the hashtags #FWStockholm and #FashionWeek. Though it doesn’t directly jab at the fashion house, it’s pretty much implied, given how eerily similar the designs look.

Would you rock some French Fry cartons on your feet? Or is this too high fashion for you? Let us know in the comments below!

Edmond Looi Combines The Fragment Design Black Pikachu With An Off-White Blazer To Form This

Completely Murdered Out

Edmond Looi’s previous CV includes many a design that varies itself quite vastly from the others available in the market. Previous projects include a drip-dyed Clot Air Force One in Porcelain Blue detailing, Goku Prestos, and a Air Jordan 4s specifically made to Erykah Badu. If that isn’t a CV then we don’t know what it.

Adding to his new collection though, is one many can appreciate the layers of detail as well as its overall colour simplicity.

Enter, the Thunderbolt Blazer, complete with Pikachu detailings, in all black, and nothing else.  A ‘Grim Reaper’ colourway of the Blazer was used as the base, added with a little bit of facelift here and there, including an external suede leather piece that resembles Pikachu’s tail. The devil is in the details, as minute embellishments can be found dotted all across the shoe. This includes a debossed Fragment stamp on the midsole, branded Kanji near the sockliner, and tongue tab replacement.

A custom box was made specifically for this pair that includes an acrylic cover with Pikachu detailing on the sides. No Fragment Pikachus were harmed in the making of this pair.

Where To Buy The Air Jordan 1 “UNC” Patent Leather

Sometimes, we think it’s not fair that women always get the good colourways, and this “UNC” Chill Blue in patent leather is no exception to the statement.

Done up in the ‘Bred Toe’ colour blocking, the “UNC” applies cold blue hues to the toebox, heel tab, collar, and outsole with black and white accents completing the look. Areas like the toebox, heel tab and collar are made out of patent leather for that extra twist.

Though its technically a women’s only release, sizes go up to US14, which translating to men’s size US12.5, meaning everyone can lace up a pair should they wish to do so.

The Air Jordan 1 “UNC” Patent Leather will release on Feb 23rd at 9AM for RM 629.

Debu Bercahaya Is Noh Salleh’s Uplifting Message To Humanity

Two years after his full-length album ‘Angin Kencang’, Noh Salleh brings spark back to his solo career with new single ‘Debu Bercahaya’.

Noh Salleh is known as both the lead singer of indie rock band Hujan and as a solo artist. In his solo works, he’s been known to adopt a  French pop sound, reminiscent of the romantic Nusantara sounds of artists like Mondo Gascaro (who incidentally produced his Angin Kencang EP back in 2014), Payung Teduh & Sore.

With Debu Bercahaya, Noh Salleh goes for more and the same but with the addition of influences like Oasis and Bittersweet’s ‘Hilang’ into the mix.

“I don’t really care about the market. I make music for my own pursuit of happiness, my own satisfaction as an artist”, said Noh Salleh at the launching of his new single and music video. “But I do feel a responsibility to show to musicians and listeners alike the existence of sounds like French pop. It’s a choice available to you in the world of music”.

As for the song’s meaning, Noh Salleh explained that ‘Debu Bercahaya’ is in reference to the Islamic belief that human beings are made of dust. “More specifically, I’m talking about the dust that come from flames, the fiery sparks. Since we’re all essentially dust, we might as well strife to be the bright and shining kind”.

This symbolism is also shown in its music video, with scenes of Noh Salleh playing his guitar by a bonfire. The music video for Debu Bercahaya centers around the artist riding solo down a highway on his motorcycle, with beautiful shots of forest and coastal scenery. The cinematography and music combined captures a lonely type of romance.

“I know it looks like a commercial for ‘Hikari Riders’ (Noh Salleh’s clothing brand), that’s not on purpose”, he commented while smiling, “I promise I’m not trying to aggressively sell anything. The video is just meant to show who I am. This is me”.

The music video is directed by Ahmad Faris of indie entertainment channel TAPAUtv. In making Debu Bercahaya’s challenging, moving highway shots possible, his team collaborated with the people behind Vans’ documentary, Demi, on legendary Malaysian skater Pa’din Musa.

When asked how Ahmad Faris translated the song into music video form, he responded: “Sometimes people focus on creating a story in a music video, but when I listen to a song, I don’t listen to the story, I pay attention to how it makes me feel”.

Besides the launch of the music video and song Debu Bercahaya, Noh Salleh also previewed another new song called ‘Mahu Ke Mana’. The track is a romantic dedication to his wife, Mizz Nina. Both Debu Bercahaya & Mahu Ke Mana are available to order on Noh Salleh’s social media platforms.

At the moment the singer-songwriter has not released a date for a future album, but as evident with this new single, Noh Salleh has shown that he has not lost his songwriting edge.
