Vans Pays Homage To Led Zeppelin In New Capsule Collection

Written by Sean Ho

2019 marks the 50th anniversary since Led Zeppelin debuted their first album, and Vans has joined forces in paying homage to the legendary rock band’s self titled album with a special capsule collection of footwear and apparel.

The skate brand called upon a duo of their most iconic silhouettes in tribute, the Vans Sk8-Hi and The Era. Each shoe pays homage to the band in its unique way, as The Era comes in a wholly printed upper that utilises each band member’s individual symbol over a premium leather with white Led Zeppelin branding across the midsole.

The Vans Skate-Hi features an album cover print of the ‘the burning Hindenburg airship’. Material wise, it features a suede and canvas upper with hints of silver on the upper panel. To finish the look a black leather side stripe is added as well as a black lace, while a red Led Zeppelin branding is printed on the side of the sneaker. Led Zeppelin fans can also unveil each of the band member’s symbols on the woven label on the internal tongue.

Moving into the apparel, the long sleeve tee and the trucker hat showcase the original artwork of the album cover.

The Vans x Led Zeppelin collection will be available at selected Vans retail stores, from the 22nd February .

Do You Love The Beatles? Tough Luck, They Don’t Exist (In This Movie)

Written by Zim Ahmadi

If you’re a songwriter, you must’ve listened to a song you love so much that you wish you wrote it. Well, Jack Malik’s wish came true, after he woke up one day to a world where everybody forgot about the Beatles.

There have been many movies centered around the music of the Beatles in the past. Some of them are surreal spectacles, like the (critically panned) musical Across the Universe, or the biographical one, Nowhere Boy. The obsession with The Beatles as cultural icons have been represented in so many forms, it feels like it’s been done to death. But Yesterday seems like a fresh story with a unique twist.

Singer-songwriter Jack Malik, played by Himesh Patel, is a struggling artist who can’t catch a break until one day the whole world experiences a blackout and Jack gets into a freakish accident. He wakes up to a world where nobody has ever heard of Yesterday, nobody has ever karaoked to Hey Jude, and nobody knew that love was all they needed.

The reason this movie should excite you isn’t just because of the interesting premise or all of the wonderful Beatles song, but also the fact that it’s helmed by director Danny Boyle, who has an impressive list of previous works, from Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later to Sunshine. The man has a knack of inserting heartfelt stories with characters that you care about regardless of the movie’s genre, and Yesterday should be no different.

The movie boasts a stellar cast consisting of the aforementioned Himesh Patel, from British soap opera EastEnders, who seem to have done a good job so far covering the Beatles tracks we all know and love from the trailer, Lily James from movies such as Baby Driver & Mamma Mia 2 and Kate McKinnon of SNL fame.

Ed Sheeran also has a cameo (or possibly a prominent supporting role) as the character Jack Malik’s producer. It’s lovely that Ed Sheeran seems to play into the joke that everyone has about him becoming more and more pop from album to album, as evident in him telling Jack that he should change Hey Jude to Hey Dude.

The trailer really wants you to suspend disbelief, where artists like Coldplay is mentioned even though many people would argue that bands like Coldplay, who cited the Beatles as a large influence, would have probably never existed. That shouldn’t really be a major obstacle in terms of the stories potential though.

Other than that, There’s also something really refreshing about seeing an Indian lead in a Western movie where the focus isn’t their “Indianness”. Jack Malik’s struggle with fame when faced with such an unprecedented opportunity already tugs at the heartstring just from the trailer. He could be any of us, and what would any of us do in the face of such beautiful madness?

No release date has been announced yet, but in the meantime, every single news piece about this trailer will mention the writer listening to the entire Beatles discography in anticipation of this movie, and that includes me.

Does Your Vans Come With A Chair?

Well Now It Does

Heritage. Often a reason for celebration in commemorating how brands have shaped their niche in the scene. Now, two Californian natives have come together to celebrate such an achievement, by bundling a chair together with a pair of shoes.

Presenting Vans’ first ever collaboration with Modernica, comprising of Modernica’s signature compressed fibreglass chairs with Vans’ archival detailing pretty much unique to the Golden State’s culture.

Of course, the chair looks like any other chair, but not many know that Modernica was the progenitor of the furniture, having perfected the press with specialised machinery, and have continued to do so for more than 25 years. Now, the limited release sees a myriad of Vans prints printed onto the chair, for a very unique limited run complementing the shoes. Which brings us to the shoes itself.

The Vault Style 36 LX and OG Slip-On LX silhouettes take centre stage with Hawaiian palm leaf motifs, with the tried and tested classic all-over checkerboard patterns.

Prices are not mentioned as of yet, so stay tuned as we update the article.

The Vault by Vans X Modernica collection will be available on Feb 23, at Solewhat (Gardens & One Utama) & Crossover (Johor Bahru & Sunway Pyramid).

You Should Definitely Get The First Line Of Nike Air Max 720 Colourways

Written by Sean Ho

Nike is continually pushing the envelope of product development with cutting edge technology, and with the very recent release of the Nike Air Max 720, came the creation of the tallest Air unit in history. An observation into the future results in a silhouette for the now, as the Air Max 720 is takes a big leap into the future, incorporating many facets into the designs from the colour to materials, which enhances the synergistic beauty sewn into the silhouette.

Dropping in three different colourways with a very unique colour palette, the debut thematic is referenced from the Northern Lights, an iridescent array of colours that distinctly mirrors the tones of the Aurora Borealis. Hence the conception of the “Night,” followed by “The Sunset,” featuring a transition from the hues of a sunrise all the way to the sunset, ending with the “Total Eclipse,” a triple black model that completes the day night cycle.

Retailing at RM709.00, price is slightly steep, but definitely differs from your other shoes. The “Night” colourway is already available, while the other two colourways will be made available on the 21st and 28th February respectively at JD Sports, Sole What, and selected retailers nationwide. Ya’ll adding this to your collection?

The Nike Zoom Fly SP Gets Doodled All Over In New Collab

Written by Sean Ho

The new Nike Zoom Fly SP collaboration with Nathan Bell highlights the unspoken truth that most runners can relate to with text and visuals speaking the thoughts of runners out loud. It’s definitely a love-hate relationship with the sport. Nathan Bell, an LA based artist and designer is influenced by all things music, pop culture and vintage graphics, and translates to this hand drawn motif on the upper of the Zoom Fly SP.

Material wise, there is no drastic change compared to previous Zoom Fly SP’s, but the main focus of this collaboration is the translucent pastel pink upper and the recognizable doodle drawings from Bell.

Would you rock this pair? Well, it’s a performance shoe, the Zoom Fly has been known for its comfort and that’s a proven fact. If you’re an avid runner and you appreciate a mix of motivation and realism in your shoe, consider this pair! Who knows, maybe it will help you run further or even at a higher pace.

If you’re just an ordinary person that does not run but is very active in sneaker collecting, and also would love to explore different fits by adding some colours to your outfits, this one is for you. With the perfect subtle tone of pink, it’s a good start!

If you decide to cop this pair, its only available on the 14th of February on nike.com and retailing at RM689.00.

Didn’t Manage To Catch The Supreme Air Max 98? Now’s Your Chance To Cop Another!

Well, Not Exactly

Recall back in 2016, when Supreme released their Air Max 98 collaboration in 4 different colours. Out of the four, only 2 were highly coveted, the Red one, and the snakeskin print. Of course, fetching these on resell requires a budget of some kind; a size 9 nets you about RM 2400, and that’s definitely some amount of money that can be better put elsewhere.

Enter this Air Max 98. Identical proportions, design, and materials. Only differences include an omit of the ‘World Famous’ wording on the heel tab, but more importantly, the grey colour on the mesh has been changed to white.

Maybe if you’re a hypebeast or a purist, then this GR model wouldn’t interest you, but to those who lusted for the original collab and couldn’t get their hands on the original, maybe certain differences can be put aside to achieve that goal. Collecting sneakers after all, is about what you like, not what other peoples.

The Nike Air Max 98 ‘Varsity Red’ still has a full size run going on at Nike.com for a price of RM 649. Pretty reasonable, depending on how you look at it.

Jordan Brand Remixes Its Colour Palette With The AJ1 Turbo Green

by Sean Ho

The Air Jordan 1 has always been under the scope of innovation and experiment, straying away from the OG colourways, and pretty much getting more hits than misses with every release.

After many leaked images around the internet over the past month, finally we have a detailed look at the up coming Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG “Turbo Green”, featuring an attractive blend of ‘Turbo Green,’ ‘White,’ ‘Light Smoke Grey,’ and hits of ‘Sail.’

The model features a distressed white leather base paired with green suede overlays in a slightly distressed finish. Additionally, A different approach by Nike with the yellow and purple tongue tag stands out, as does the grey coloured ankle collar. The off-white midsole plays a huge role in it’s vintage look. As an added extra, purple and turquoise coloured laces are also included in the pack. A text on the lateral portion completes the look. Different, but still fresh.

This pair is set to release on the 14th of February – 9:00 MYT on nike.com at a retail of RM649.
