Why FKA Twigs Absolutely Kills The Fashion Game In The “Fukk Sleep” MV

Written By Jo Yee

When it comes to fashion trends, there are the followers, and then there are the ones who bend, snap and break the normative trends and turn it into a whole league of their own. Hot off of ASAP Rocky’s recent album Testing is a collaboration with FKA Twigs on “Fukk Sleep”, which to fashion nerds like me are a whole lot more of a visual feast of epic proportions than just music to the ears.

In this visual masterpiece directed by acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Diana Kunst, we see the diabolical duo wrecking havoc through town in an arsenal of eclectic looks and and unapologetic swagger in their every step.

We see ASAP Rocky, styled by Matthew Henson (@henson), starring the music video with futuristic streetwear that is upscaled with high end usuals like Alexander Wang, Raf Simons and Calvin Klein. However, his looks also featured other smaller brands that surprisingly outshone these bigger names in terms of flair, the likes of Christian Stone’s (@imongrindr) neon balaclava and Martin Rose’s (@martin_rose) snakeskin pants combo bring a dash of colour to an otherwise monotonous ensemble.

Immediately after that the limelight is stolen by FKA Twigs in the video with her full throttle of looks, which include big names such as Christopher Kane, Dior and Versace. The look, styled by Twig’s personal stylist – Matthew Josephs (@matthew_josephs), is complemented meticulously by other alternative fashion brands from the scene such as Yueqi (@_yueqiqi), Creepyyeha (@creepyyeha) and the notorious Fecal Matter (@matieresfecales whose iconic alien duo also makes a cameo) that comes together to create Twig’s intoxicating looks, further cementing her iconic symbol as the alt-goddess of the decade.

Josephs, who leads fashion direction for FKA Twigs on her videos, campaigns and editorial content, explains to Vogue UK that Twigs had wanted to push herself out of her ethereal comfort zone into more provocative sartorial territory. “One of the main inspirations was my favourite [John] Galliano Dior collection, autumn/winter 2003 – it’s the perfect match of soft and hard-core romance,” says Josephs, and he sourced some of the pieces in the video and for Twig’s zine – Avant Garden, from that particular season such as the delicate floral latex headpiece seen on Twigs in the stripper joint scene.

Despite having last released her album M3LL155X over 3 years ago, Twigs, who first started out her career as a dancer with insane skills ranging from contemporary dance  to even incorporating ‘Shibari’ in her music video Pendulum surprises her fans this time by picking up pole dancing while cladded in Nasir Mazhar’s (@nasirmazhar) red PVC body harness and knee pads, in which she demonstrates her skillset effortlessly in this video. Her interpretive dance skills, a feature in almost all her music videos, has been picked up by major brands like Nike and Apple, which features her injecting, unfettered coolness into each shot of their product campaigns. It’s undeniable that the dexterity that comes with her dancing skills definitely elevates a lot of her looks as Twigs owns these looks with her unique finesse and not the other way round, which often seems to be case for artistes who lacks their own vision when it comes to the curation of their visual aesthetics.

Rarely is history made by following trends, hence along the line of artist-cum-style icons like Madonna, Grace Jones and Lil Kim, Twigs is definitely setting the bar sky-high that sets her apart from the cookie cut out of the masses. By imbuing her unique individuality as a multi-disciplinary artist into every crevice of her artistic creation, Twigs definitely leave us wanting and waiting for more from her.

BREAKING: Malaysia Is Getting The Alphaedge 4D

Adidas may have heard us after all. After months of salivating over the Adidas Consortium 4D series, the first Futurecraft 4D release, all we were able to do is just look at pictures with glazed eyes of wanting a pair at retail, but now, the dream is closer to us than expected, in the form of the ALPHAEDGE 4D.

The ALPHAEDGE differs a little bit from the Futurecraft, in the sense that the upper is more focused towards running abuse. The Primeknit features forgefiber, a derivative of the Alphabounce forgemesh to provide a lightweight, second-skin that holds the foot tight and vanishes in the straights. Nothing less than the cutting edge for Adidas’ flagship runner.

The midsole however, is the real star of the show. Think of it as the Ultraboost, in all sense of comfort and responsiveness, but a hundred times better. Borne from 17 years worth of athlete data, consolidated and refined into a hollow midsole that delivers controlled energy that reacts instantaneously to your demands; be it support, cushioning, or explosive bounce, whenever and wherever you need it.

The silhouette is finished off with a Continental rubber outsole with additional traction pods for systematically placed grip during sharp cuts and turns.

The ALPHAEDGE 4D is available at Adidas Sports KLCC, and adidas.com.my for a retail price of just RM1400. Honestly, you’re better off with these than the Yeezy 350 ‘Sesame’ or 500 ‘Salt.’ Keep a lookout on the 17th of November, and pray to the gods you get your hands on a pair of these beauties, cos this will definitely be limited stock.

What If Crocs Came Back Into The Mainstream?

From High Fashion To Streetwear

Trends come and go but this is one we would have never seen coming. We’re back, with another discussion of another trend which involves the society’s least favourite footwear, Crocs. Before you start making jokes about Crocs and let your train of thought steer into another direction, hear us out.

Recently, the famed crocodile brand has been making waves collaborating with fashion brands and rappers. We start with a high-end fashion house which is familiar to many, and has been the talk of town in recent times, Balenciaga. Balenciaga debuted their collaboration with Crocs October last year during their women’s SS18 fashion show with a 10cm version of the clogs. We know platform shoes are pretty much out of season, yet for some odd reason, Balenciaga managed to sell out their collaboration within hours through a pre-order on Barney’s website even at a whopping $850 (USD) retail price. Consumerism in the upper echelons is a very weird thing.

After dusting off its catalog with Balenciaga, most of us thought that Crocs big break was over, but alas, we were very wrong. Crocs took their next step and collaborated with award-winning international rapper Post Malone to wrap up the second year of Post’s ‘Come As You Are’ campaign. With devilish-looking graphics throughout the uppers and six custom-designed Jibbitz charms, the Dimitri Clog sold out within a day, hardly a surprising feat given Post Malone’s fanbase. Crocs made the right decision to collaborate with Post Malone where a personality like his is aligned with the brands campaign direction, satirical, daddy-like, and the complete opposite of what the norm is in 2018.

We thought it was a one-off thing, but god it really isn’t. We’re not done, and so is Crocs. Another photo surfaced recently teasing the streetwear and fashion scene that they’re back and this time with clothing brand PLEASURES. Based on the teaser, we observe a skeletal-graphic of feet on the uppers with PLEASURES branding visible on the strap of the silhouette. From the looks of it, we’re expecting nothing less than a sold out tab on the product, much like the others with Posty and Balenciaga. However, we only have this photo to share as the release info and price is yet to be announced.

Given Crocs’ decision to close down its factories and centralize its structure, it’s surprising to see the brand turn to collaborations to make itself relevant again. What are your thoughts on the direction of Crocs and their choices of collaborations? Will they be able to change the impression of the society on their products based on their successful collaborations and if anything, could Crocs conquer the market with their comfortable, yet badly designed sandals? We’ll leave that to you to decide but rest assured, this is just the beginning of what Crocs has to offer.

Aina Abdul Debuts New Single Titled Shadows

Channeling Yuna and Jhene Aiko In Her Style

Written by Aida Rashid

Aina Abdul is no stranger in the music industry, having entered the national prime reality television singing competition, ‘Mentor Legend and was the first runner-up of the show with the guidance of Malaysia’s Queen of Rock, Ella. She is also internationally-acclaimed as she rose to bag the Senior Grand Vocalist Champion’s title in the World Championships of Performing Arts that was held in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Her new single, ‘Shadow’ is a manifestation of the broken heart and the confused mind. It depicts the emotion of unreturned feelings and being on a different page from your lover. It is an anthem surrounding the deep aspirations of young love, something many of us have experienced in our lives.  The pain and angst are portrayed in the way she sings, with the company of backing vocals that impact the portrayal even better. The song carries a dark, vivid ambiance that sits very well with it’s name “Shadow”.

The strength of her vocals is exemplified in her choice of delving into the modern R&B genre, having inspired by the likes of Yuna, Ledisi and Jhene Aiko. With her outstanding achievements and experiences, she’s bound to make herself known in the scene sooner rather than later.

Stussy’s Holiday Collection Is Available Now At Stussy KL

For the Men’s Holiday 2018 collection, Stüssy continues to build off the strengths of the seminal range that came directly before it. Workwear is the backbone of the collection, which makes sense considering those are traditionally protective garments, and the holiday season is the coldest of the year. The structural details of various uniforms range from military to custodial.

There is a duality evident in this collection such as the zipped work shirt in brilliant bright colors – to something as complex as patterned sweatpants that look like they mirror the walls of a French palace. Prints in general are what continue to separate Stüssy pieces from the rest of the pack, pairing beautiful images of psychedelia with sturdy and universally beloved fabrics. Great examples of this are the vibrant mushroom prints on heavyweight cord shirting, zebra stripes on ultra warm polar fleece, and a puffer jacket that looks like it jumped out of one of those life-sized chess boards.

The Stüssy Women Holiday 2018 collection however, is focused more on how both skiwear and cold weather uniforms have evolved over the decades, the line presents a fascinating hybrid of the two styles with a postmodern execution. The seemingly disparate inspirations actually compliment each other beautifully, making for garments that are both highly functional and highly beautiful.

You’ll notice design details that would have graced the slopes in the 1980s – such as heavy quilts, exaggerated sleeve widths and ribbed collars – expertly intertwined with many functional elements that are trademarks of construction sites worldwide, especially from Japan. The inspirations are mostly evident in outerwear, such as the Reggie Nylon Jacket and Bix Fleece Bomber. There are also plenty of Stüssy classics to layer alongside them though, with a number of t-shirt dresses and printed long sleeve shirts to choose from. Yet another season of strong world-building from Stüssy Women. While they obviously make clothes that work in the now, there is always the sense that they have one eye on heritage and the other on the future of womenswear.

Like what you see? Both men & women Holiday Collection 18’ is now available in STUSSY Kuala Lumpur Chapter Store.

The CLOT Air Force 1 Gets A Chinese Porcelain Makeover By Edmond Looi

It only seems fitting, that a shoe imposed  with Imperial motifs from Chinese streetwear brand, gets accentuated even more with inspirations drawn from Chinese porcelain, and the results we gotta say, are nothing short of astounding.

After taking an order from a customer to do up his pair of CLOT Air Force 1s, Edmond decided to bring the thematic further by imbuing the porcelain’s palette onto the minute detailings of the shoe i.e the motifs and dragon markings on the satin fabric. Let’s talk attention to detail. According to Edmond, it took a painstaking 30 hours to do one side of the shoe, ensuring none of the dye bleeds onto the fabric and messing up the neatness of the motifs.

The sock liner is tinged fully in blue, while the rubber sole is untouched. The swoosh is accented with blue highlights, and a massive CLOT logo is painted onto the medial portion of the shoe. A smaller version is touched up on the heel cup.

For more info, head to Edmond Looi’s Instagram to see his previous custom jobs. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!

Nike Restocks The Air Force 1 Utility

You probably have seen this around the marketplace but why you’re reading this again is because Nike is restocking the Nike Air Force 1 Utility QS.

The Air Force 1 Utility QS features a white leather upper with black canvas buckled straps which plays as the lacing system for the pair. On the strap, a large, white Swoosh logo is observable while a branded Nike tongue tab is visible on the mesh tongue. To complete the military look of the Air Force 1 Utility QS, a D-ring heel pull tab is used on the silhouette. One of the detailing highlights of this pair is the glow in the dark outsoles which is not commonly seen during current releases.

The Air Force 1 Utility QS will be restocking on Nike this coming 20th of November. If you are looking to elevate your techwear game, this is definitely one of the better options.

Tyler, The Creator Reinvents The Converse Chuck 70 and One Star In Burlap

An evolution, is what Tyler is doing with his Golf Le Fleur series with Converse. After 3 successful runs with the One Star featuring fuzzy suede in many different colours, the material is ditched for something a bit more natural, and dare we say, odd for a shoe.

Burlap is definitely not the first choice for many manufacturers to use to make a shoe, but Tyler’s done it, and the results look spectacular.

2 models are highlighted in this capsule collection, the One Star Ox and Chuck 70. Both are constructed with burlap, while the Chuck 70 gets another version made with vintage canvas. All models come with reverse Golf Le Fleur print.

An anorak completes the whole collection, made from jute fabric, and features mirrored Golf Le Fleur prints as well.

The Chuck 70 retails for RM499 while the One Star Ox goes for RM479.90. Fancy the anorak? Well, those go for RM499.90. All models are available at major Converse boutiques (KLCC, Pavilion, Mid-Valley, Tebrau City) and at Crossover, Sunway Pyramid, and is available on the 15th November onwards. We’re feeling the heat with these.
