Hype Clothing Co. Unleashes “Unforgotten” Collection For Fall 16′

HYPE_UNFGTN_IMAGE_1_LEAD

Hype Clothing Co. has unleashed the “Unforgotten” collection for its Fall ’16 release, in time to celebrate the quadrennial Olympics’ game. The collection is a tribute to the Olympian-turned-soldier athletes during a cancelled game back in the 1940s when WWII commenced, showcasing a darker take on sportswear.

Prison bars are reimagined with the use of stripes and a colour palette of black, baby blue, royal blue and white. Focusing on vintage Track & Field’s uniform details, the collection placed some innovated retro detailing on its windbreaker, ribbed cuff- button down, tank top and shorts amongst the tees, polo tee, sweatshirt and raglan. The collection also boasts a side of accessories comprising the 5-panel, 6-panel hat and duffle bag.

Experience Artistic Heaven at Red Bull’s #EhWauBulan Art Showcase!

The energy drink experts at Red Bull are in the final stages before the launch of their #EhWauBulan Art Showcase, an inaugural exhibition of creativity that will see 59 selected artworks on display in celebration of Malaysia’s 59th independence day.

Feast your eyes on the gorgeous masterpieces by a fraction of these shortlisted creative talents!

(Please note that you can see the titles of each artwork and names of their respective artists by hovering your cursor over the individual pictures.)

The artworks were chosen in a blind selection process from over 332 unique submissions by a distinguished panel of experts: street artist Fritilldea, contemporary artist Ivan Lam, and National Visual Arts Development Board trustee and artist Phillip Wong.

According to Red Bull, the panel was astonished by the sheer volume of submissions, diverse artistic styles and the experimental energy in subject matter. Malaysia Boleh!

“Red Bull’s submission call was open-minded enough to yield a very diverse pool of submissions. It confirms that artists in Malaysia are exploring many styles and mediums. Our arts market and industry are clearly in a very contemporary phase right now, and I’m excited to see it reflected in what we saw during the curatorial process,” says Phillip Wong.

Street artist Fritilldea also notes that people here are beginning to identify as self-taught artists early in their lives, and the internet inspires them to boldly experiment with patterns, portraits, doodles, oil, and graphic design.

“Initiatives like these enable young people to see a viable future for themselves in the art industry, and creates a community who appreciates their work,” he says.

Of the artists selected, one standout artist will benefit from a bespoke artist programme that best suits their needs and nurtures their talent. This artist will be revealed at the opening night.

The showcase is open to the public from 31st August to 7th September at White Box, Publika. If you’re interested in attending the event or are keen to see the artists selected for this showcase, do head over to the event website here!

Say Hello to MASSESzine #8 : The Rock Issue!

Rock music’s history on this side of the planet has been illustrious to say the least. Ever since the rock ‘n’ roll phenomenon breached our shores, countless bands have coalesced over the years, suffusing the local airwaves with their own definition of the popular genre.

Heavily influenced by blues, R&B and country music, rock finds itself best experienced on the live stage and assumes a particularly imposing position within the underground music scene in Malaysia. However, many think the rock scene has said its reluctant farewell to its golden age, with live shows on the decline and a bevy of prominent rock bands seemingly experiencing its twilight years. True or not, the current condensation of modern rockers aspiring to make it big indicates that the scene has yet to lose its beating heart.

Prominent figures within the rock community have much to say about how rock is true music and that the scene could mend itself should certain steps be taken. We pried into the mind of ROTTW’s founder, for instance, for a more insightful look at our countries rockers. Meanwhile, Kak Jenn shares, among other things, a little bit about why we should eradicate the ‘free mentality’ that is commonplace among Malaysians and how doing this will help the scene as a whole.

Jason Lo imparts a little bit of crazy into issue #8’s pages while dipping into the difficulties of managing Rock The World, arguably the biggest local rock showcase there is. We’ve also got Bunkface featured this time around, in which we managed to glean a little bit of info on the band’s upcoming all-English album.

Love Me Butch’s guitarist, Wing Meng was also kind enough to sit down with us to talk about his businessman persona and how music shaped his path into the retail sphere. Of course, in keeping with MASSES tradition, we start off with a brief history lesson on rock music itself before touching on the local bands that have made an impact on the rock culture here.

Please enjoy this rock-flavoured issue and never stop rocking hard!

Simple Plan enroute for Kuala Lumpur tour this September!

For millennials, pseudo-time travelling back to our teenage angst-filled years can’t be an enticing prospect for everyone. Some of us don’t want to be reminded of our early post-adolescent stupidity. Of course, if that period of youthful silliness was permeated by the resonating punk sound stream brought on by Simple Plan, the trip down memory lane might be worth it after all.

In a long awaited revisit since the pop punk behemoth’s last musical escapade in Kuala Lumpur during early 2012, Simple Plan intends to bring their “Taking One for the Team Tour Kuala Lumpur 2016” to a spirited conclusion this 7th September. Malaysia will mark their next stop on their World Tour following the band’s Singapore invasion on 5th September.

In case you’ve been a virtual hermit and avoided all mainstream punk news over the last year, this tour complements the release of the French-Canadian band’s fifth studio album since their inception in 1999, titled “Taking One for the Team”. KL Live will once again be the stage for Simple Plan’s brand of pop punk angst and rousing rock ballads… and then some.

Amazingly, in the 17 years since Simple Plan’s formation the band’s living components have remained anchored in place. Main vocalist Pierre Bouvier, drummer Chuck Comeau, bassist David Desrosiers, rhythm guitarist Sébastien Lefebvre and lead guitarist Jeff Stinco are all still here, still rock stars and still more than happy to bring the thrills. This is no mean feat, but don’t mistake this for stagnation. If the uplifting reggae themed “Singing in the Rain” track from their recent album is any indication, the band is breaching experimental waters in defiance of predictability.

Have a listen to Simple Plan’s “Singing in the Rain” below to have a feel for their new sound!

They may be slightly out of their comfort zone, but their performance here is promised to showcase Simple Plan’s evolution in a big way and they’re not looking to disappoint! Rest assured that we’re still going to sing along to some of their classics when the band takes the stage early next month.
These new elements being woven into their pop punk sound may seem like the band is swerving away from their core music, but this is a natural development in maturity of their music. Simple Plan has continued to stay true to themselves, writing spirited tracks that advocate being yourself no matter what. It could be said that they are taking their own advice, as they continue to allow their music to lead the way, not allowing others’ expectations to shape it.
If you’re pumped to experience the celebration of their new album, join them at KL Live on 7th September from 8.30pm onward! Official tickets have been available for purchase since 5th July, priced at RM188, RM288, and RM388 respectively for 3 free standing areas.
For clarity, here’s a look at the seating plan below:
