The Marksmen Series: @syahminorsan

Our newest edition of “The Marksmen Series” is now a motion picture! In one sense of the word, that is. This time, we highlight a local photographer who explores the world of street culture through his lens. Raja Muhammad Syahmi is as talented as he is malu-malu kucing, but his shyness didn’t stop him from sharing his own photographic experience and thoughts.

Without further ado, here’s our first video of “The Marksmen Series” featuring @syahminorsan.

If you’re interested in Syahmi’s work, feel free to follow him on his Instagram here.

JTNC by Justin Chew: Collection One

Fashion label JTNC, formerly known as Justin Chew Basic, has adopted street culture edginess and attitude in its first collection since the re-branding. Simply titled Collection One, the offering also features a few pieces created in collaboration with BOTANIC Records, an independent music label dedicated to championing and cultivating Southeast Asian music.

This makes JTNC the first ever local fashion label to collaborate with a local music label in an effort to pursue similar interests in promoting peace, unity and creativity. These collaborated wearables provide a subtle download link to local producer Adam Kasturi’s latest EP.

Some of the collection’s offerings bear starkly contrasting and vibrant design elements against the dominantly warm colour palette. The denim pieces are tastefully worn out here and there for a quintessential edgy vibe. Regardless, most pieces possess a hint of class despite being anchored by street culture sensibilities.

Restraint teases “Rise Above Hate” album with “For Better Days”

restraint-album

What’s up people of the world! Today, we have a first taste of Malaysian hardcore band Restraint’s brand new full-length album titled “Rise Above Hate”.

I still remember listening to their old records like “Until The End”, “One Family” and “Pure From Blood” back in the old day. The band seemed to live and bleed the hardcore genre when their debut record put them on the map 8 years ago.

The band has finally finished recording their new full length album and have put to the table their newest track, “For Better Days”. “For Better Days” has sufficient hardcore pizzazz to potentially subject listeners to dangerous quantities of musically-induced head banging. The best part about this new single is that it features the guitar shredding talents of Iskandar from the band Artefacts.

Check out Restraint’s newest track “For Better Days” below!

“We Don’t Have a Name For This Show….Yet” Shoe Review : Under Armour Stephen Curry “MVP Pack”

Golden State Warriors star and all-around powerhouse Stephen Curry ended the NBA 2015-16 season with the crown of “Most Valuable Player”. This marks the second consecutive season in which he maintains that title! To commemorate his success, Under Armour has released Curry’s Back to Back MVP pack.

Our resident Buddha and Chief Editor, Bryan Chin, got his hands on this pack. Since it is a basketball shoe, we brought it to the hood to see what they have. Check out the video above and see what is his verdict on the shoe.

Home Court- Sunflare

Home Court‘s latest delivery of street poetry, “Sunflare”, ticks several boxes on the visual front. Yes, the track itself is lit and distinguished by the obvious retro influences it borrowed from the 80s (we think). And yes, the Court’s rap spew blazes across the over 4-minute video seamlessly. If sounds could be set aflame, this track would have done it.

But visually is where “Sunflare” also shines. Directed by Hqa and Dae Kim alongside co-director Jocelyn Stemilyn, “Sunflare” is a stunning concoction of psychedelic visuals, gritty cinematography, Polaroid-esque vibrancy and old school television static. Entirely shot and edited by Haverhuck‘s Haq with mixing and mastering accomplished by Lee Meng Shiong, the sounds and disparate visual elements somehow manage to blend together perfectly.

Experience the video for yourself right below:

It’s A Wrap! – The Vans Musicians Wanted Malaysia Stop 2016

Those keeping up with footwear giant Vans‘ dabbling in the music space will know that the Vans Musicians Wanted Malaysia Stop was held successfully last Saturday. Seven musicians, who were shortlisted out of 100 entries, competed with each other for a slot to perform on the main stage of House of Vans Singapore Stop this 24th September.

Dirgahayu, Iqbal M, Lawalah Familia, Young Thousand, The Humming Birds, 199x and Volatile battled musically at KL Venue for 4 hours, where each band were given 20 minutes to impress the judges. The judges’ evaluation of their talent were divided into four categories, namely creativity, originality, style and band appeal.

Jennifer Thompson was among the panel of judges aside from Smek of Killeur Calculateur and Elijah from Vans Singapore & Malaysia. Apparently, the judges had difficulty deciding on the winner as they were all very talented and gave great performances. Malaysia Boleh, eh?

In the end, Lawalah Familia emerged the champion and secured their spot at the main stage of House of Vans Singapore Stop! Meanwhile, Volatile received the highest number of online votes, prompting the judges to allow the band to also make it’s presence known in Singapore this 24th September!

Here are some other accolades that were awarded to some of the musicians present:

Champion – Lawalah Familia & Volatile

Best Vocal – Sean from Volatile

Kyoto Protocol: “The Evolution of Malaysian Music” Part 1

To commemorate the 59th year of our country’s independence and the upcoming Malaysia Day, five-piece homegrown rock band Kyoto Protocol has brewed musical nostalgia. Their latest video takes the viewer on a journey through the evolution of Malaysian pop music, starting from the 50s all the way to the contemporary styles we know and love today.

Timeless and memorable classics like A. Ramlie’s “Oh Fatima”, M. Osman’s “Suzana”, P. Ramlee’s “Pok Pok Bujang Lapok”, Alleycats’ “Andainya Kau Pergi Dulu”, Search’s “Issabella”, Sudirman’s “Chowkit Road” and many more are covered in the first of this (presumably) two part series.

Check out their wonderful musical medley in the video below:

1. Why did you embark on this project?

Perhaps it was a personal journey for me, being born in Singapore and mostly English educated and listening to English music almost exclusively from a very young age. I’ve been wanting to learn about the history of pop music of Malaysia for as long as we’ve been in the industry now, and then I thought it would be a good idea to make it something that we could share with all Malaysians as well! So what better day to release the video than the middle point between Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day.

We’ve had an affinity for doing medleys for a couple of years now. It started when we were asked to play a show with disco music for the opening of the H&M store in Avenue K. We realised that we were out of our depth because disco requires different instrumentation compared to rock music. To minimise that effect of “emptiness” we came up with the idea to medley the songs, which made it more surprising and exciting for the listener. Of course, an added benefit for me as a singer is that I get to remember less lyrics!

2. How was the selection of songs done?

The songs that were selected had to fulfill two criteria. First, it had to be a song that the whole band would be passionate about doing. Second, it would have to fit into a medley!

We all sat together and talked about what songs were “must haves”. There could have been a lot more songs that we could pile into the medley, but we were also mindful of the audience’s attention span. So our then manager told us to keep it within 10 minutes, and we duly complied.

There are definitely some songs in there that were maybe my personal picks, and then the other band members grew to love those songs as well! An example of this was “Lagu Untukmu”. And then there were other songs that I didn’t really know, but after seeing the passion of my bandmates in wanting to perform them it kindled my passion for the song as well.

3. How long did it take to record this?

The recording process itself only took 1 day, thanks to the guys at Melodiya Recordings and their beautiful studio in Putra Heights, as well our partners for this project Luey Motion Lab who conceptualised the visual part of the video.

The planning for the video took a lot more time. There were multiple meetings with Luey Motion Lab months before. From the music perspective, the rearrangement of the songs alone took 2 months to do. Although we had experience in performing medleys, this was our first time having to work with a short time limit! Our love song medley at the Tenacious D concert was 20 minutes long, and the #MalaysianMusic medley is under 10 minutes. It’s actually a lot more work making a shorter medley with roughly the same amount of songs!
