EXCURSIONS by Kayczar

Ex.Cur.SionKayczar, a young local hip hop enthusiast and rapper from Lanun, Johor Bahru, has just dropped his debut mixtape called “Excursions”.

“The tape is called Excursions because that’s sort of what I do daily (laughs). So i really wanted to make music for people to drive to,” says Kayczar.

Through the mixtape, Kayczar attempts to bring back the kind of lyrical depth that was more common during the earlier days of rap music. It also portrays a mini journey throughout, symbolised by the separation of the letters in the cover art.
The first track embodies a desperate tone in the move to make it big in the scene, while the following couple of tracks are about him in a state of limbo between wanting something and needing something else entirely. Meanwhile, the final few tracks are essentially statements of brash determination.
Beyond this mixtape, Kayczar will be starting his gig in JB and KL as well as a music video which is currently in the process. Not only that, he is also a part of a new Dj trio by the name of Mejar Thanni with two colleagues; DJ Prithu and Roshan Menon (the photographer).
Without further ado, do check out the Excursions mixtape below!

Ze Rebelle’s “UNIVERZE” Delivers Cool 80s Vibe

The seemingly Laga Gaga-inspired electropop talent, Ze Rebelle is enroute back into star-spangled limelight with an upcoming album slated for release this 8th August.

In conjunction with the local artist’s new album titled “UNIVERZE”, Ze will also be releasing a debut short film bearing the same name. The self-directed film was shot in Belgium in collaboration with Belgian cinematographer Swampz Mushi. The film’s trailer can be seen below:

The album is Ze’s labour of love over the last 18 months with Paris-based producer DocOlv and is a 14-track offering that revisits good old 80s electro sounds. Thanks to its retro leanings, “UNIVERZE” is equal parts nostalgia-inducing and a peculiar audio experience. Half the time the music makes you feel like you are in an à la Tron-styled pixelated realm with flashing neon lights. This is especially true for the album’s anthem, “The Glam Mothership” featuring Ze’s long-time Belgian collaborator DUSAAR.

Beside DUSAAR, the album will also feature Italian duo Vegamoore, Australian artist Tomás Ford, British producer Abstract Source, German producer Ego Boycott, French producer Richard Bahericz and Ze’s mysterious part-time lover McFLYYY.

It’s not an all-English album either; “Bintang” is the offering’s sole Malay language track and there’s even a French track titled Je Ne Parle Pas Français”.

“Like my past 2 albums, it’s been a very personal journey to get here. Where I cant speak my mind in real life, I speak with my heart through music,” Ze says.

You can pre-order the album now via iTunes or Bandcamp. Do remember to check in on Ze Rebelle by visiting her facebook page!

Happy Tones with Ceriatone

A couple of years into the 21st century, Nik Shazwan Nik Azam was just a guy with a talent for tinkering with guitar amplifiers. Realising that he could create a market for his hand-wired creations – especially in the United States – as he could build cheaply and sell at affordable price points, he begun to sell his works on eBay.

Back then, Nik tinkered at home, assembling and replicating circuit boards of vintage amplifiers from recognised brands such as Fender and Marshall.

Fast forward to the present and Nik is at the helm of Ceriatone, a bonafide local enterprise boasting over 40 guitar amplifier models. With 15 staff members under him, the company typically ships anywhere between 100 to 150 parts and amps monthly with each component selling upwards of USD650.

Evidently he’s come a long, long way in the last 14 years.

“It’s all about the last 10 percent. We are not talking about the reliability and the cool factor and all that. We are talking strictly about sound. Our circuits might be exactly the same, and they [bigger brands] might sound almost the same, but it is the last 10 percent that makes us different,” says Nik.

As the company’s founder, Nik isn’t an armchair boss. Sleep deprivation is common to him as he invests a lot of time on coming up with methods to produce audio perfection. He believes that the amplifier is more than just the sum of its parts; sound is sensitive and susceptible to almost everything so a single error can make the product utterly worthless.

Beyond replicating certain configurations, the challenge comes in identifying the best components — for instance, a change in capacitor directly changes the sound. Nik argues that if you can’t hear the difference, you’re practically deaf— and laying out the board in a way that it is not a rat’s nest.

“Sound can be subjective. But you’ll know a good sound when you hear it. The human psyche is formed in a way that we can recognise it,” Nik says.

It doesn’t take much to know a good product when you hear one. A quick scour through the Internet will lead you to forums and a Facebook page, set up by Ceriatone fans themselves, to discuss and shower praises on the products.

“I don’t have a marketing department, and I’ve not spent a single marketing cent until today,” says Azlin, Nik’s wife and confidant who left her job in 2006 to help with managing Ceriatone’s bread and butter– accounts, HR, inventories, shipping and administrative work; basically everything else under the sun.

“Seeing your customers post YouTube videos and positive reviews about our amps— all those are really rewarding. We just have to continue putting out a good product,” she adds.

In the final moment, Nik and Azlin reflect on their decade-long journey with Ceriatone. They’ve only just begun, and they are enjoying the ride.

“It’s always about the process,” Nik says after awhile.

“If there’s something to take away from this [experience], it’s about sticking to the process. Without that, you can’t learn about yourself, about your weaknesses. It’s all about using your knowledge, even if it’s little to begin with, to create art, to create … something.”

Vibrant Diversity Beautifully Illustrated in TheQuickStyle’s Dance Short

The sacred Hindu temple nestled in Batu Caves has played witness to the intersection of ancient culture with contemporary expression. It has modern dancers to thank for that. The landmark is no stranger to footfalls as it is a tourist attraction and a focal point for the celebration of Thaipusam, but having people rhythmically stepping to Major Lazer & DJ Snake’s “Lean On” is likely a first for Batu Caves.

In a wonderful video (click the ‘picture’ above to watch) by Norwegian dance crew Quick Style with Astro Battleground Malaysia dancers in tow, we see more evidence that dance truly knows no cultural nor racial barriers. Heck, why not just mash it all together?

Screenshot 2016-08-03 17.02.20

The dance short also plays a little traditional music before the transition into “Lean On” and we get to see some basic parkour by local dancers dressed in cultural Chinese attire. The cinematography is on point and exudes atmosphere, the hip-hop choreography made clever use of their location and Batu Caves received a nice infusion of youth culture as a result of this production.

In 3 minutes and 20 seconds, Quick Style’s Suleman Malik, Bilal Malik and Nasir Sirikhan brought our country’s diversity and beauty into greater exposure on social media. However, the video’s reception wasn’t entirely positive. A quick (pun unintended) look at Quick Style’s Facebook page shows a few commentators who were unhappy with how the sacred place was treated as a dance stage. One comment, for instance, noted how the dancers shouldn’t have performed with their shoes on… and something about leggings in a temple being a no-no.

Others were quick to defend the dancers’ efforts in using Batu Caves as the backdrop for their performance, though. Overall, most agreed that the video showed great choreography and quality cinematography.

@ShafiqAnakSaleh Tests Out The Huawei P9

IMG_20160724_144006

Although receiving almost no professional training in the craft of photography, @shafiqanaksaleh has quickly rose to the ranks as one of the most recognisable names in the Malaysian Instagram photography landscape.  Having worked with a string of major international brands like adidas, HUF (Malaysia), Haval and many more, Shafiq has been engaged by Chinese Telecommunications giant, Huawei to take their latest flagship phone, the P9 for a spin.

IMG_20160727_101819

Although he tested the phone for a very short period of time, here’s what he had to say about the phone and it’s camera’s functions:-

“All these photos were edited using my own Lightroom presets, but to be honest, there was not much editing to be done, especially on details because the phone captures all the details very well. And sharp too.”

“My favourite feature of the phone is especially the bokeh and the aperture, because it’s able to go up to 0.95! Good for anyone who love to shoot portraits and close-ups. The phone is also very fast in focusing, very good in low light conditions and has a lot of other sweet built-in features like the long-exposure feature, which is good for light-trail shots, so there’s no need to download other apps for it. “

The all-new Huawei P9 is available at all Huawei outlets nationwide, and is priced just slight above the 2k mark at RM2099.

Seloka Kehilangan Adat Melayu Lyrics

Aduhai resam, wahai adat!

Lembaga dimana telah berpudat?

Wah! Hilang adat lenyaplah bahasa
Ghaib sepi tiada bersisa
Semakin mengerang senantiasa
Laksana dipagut tedung yang bisa!

Amboi!Amboi! Adat tiruan, resam terpaksa
Umpama gajah menjadi rusa
Oleh ragi campuran bangsa
Adat tertib habis binasa!

Sayang!Sayang!
Merajuk kemanakah adat melayu?
Laksana debu dipuput bayu

Wallahualam!
Entahkan jatuh ke laut gerangan
Disambar yu!
