THE AIR JORDAN 9 LOW “BRED”

Jordan Brand is bringing back low top hype in their retro line with the upcoming release of the Air Jordan 9 Low as part of their SS2016 lineup. The Air Jordan 9 Low silhouette was a model that was exclusively reserved for players in the early 2000s such as Mike Bibby and Derek Anderson, and will now finally hit the shelves.

The renowned “BRED” colourway is back on the AJ9 but with a twist. They introduced the snakeskin to the low top silhouette that never appear on the court before. The University Red hint creates that iconic Chicago-like colourway throughout and sitting atop the mudguard in a matching prominent black accent. They will be available at selected Jordan Brand’s retailers such as Hoops Station and Hundred%, priced at RM689.

Pantun, Malaysia’s First Pin Brand Launches Debut Collection

Hi guys, we’re excited to introduce Pantun’s first collection featuring enamel pins! The brand is a homegrown effort formed by a few friends who have chosen the medium of pins to pay tribute to Malaysian culture and also the wider, universal pop culture. Pantun began in 2015 as a side project by people who were not satisfied with the absence of pins that represented their home country and thus set out on a mission to create pins that symbolise exactly that.

After countless revisions over the year, the team was finally able to materialise their ideas. The collection embodies Pantun’s light-hearted and casual approach to design. Their debut collection is accompanied by their first ‘artist’ series of pins featuring illustrator and graffiti artist Cloakwork. Pantun has noted that it intends to continue this series to feature more artists, both local and abroad.

In their pursuit of constantly creating new products, every design is limited in quantity and will not be reproduced or restocked. Essentially, this means that each pin possesses a certain degree of exclusivity and rarity to it, an aspect which could be doubly appealing to avid collectors.

Collection 1 is now available on their website but first, have a taste of their range of pins in the slider below:

Like what you see? If yes, feel free to head over to Pantun’s official website to place your orders while stocks last!

MASSES Picks: 5 Movies You Probably Have Not Watched (April)

suicide squad

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice has been out in cinemas for a while now. Casual and hardcore fan reactions have typically ranged from slightly disappointed to downright disgusted. To those wanting more and with the promise that more live adaptation films of the DC universe are to come, we decided to feature some DC animated movies to get you familiar with the heroes and villains in the DC universe. Though they are animations/ cartoons, the movies selected here are for more mature audiences so don’t expect a Zootopia feel to them.

Have a good time watching them; we know we did!
1. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 & 2 (2012/2013)

Batman has been missing from Gotham for a long time. His old rogues have been imprisoned or are dead but a new gang called the Mutants has been terrorizing Gotham. Bruce Wayne can’t stand watching at the sidelines anymore so he takes up the cowl once again to fight crime… at the age of 55. Seeking justice for Gotham, he gains a new Robin while encountering Two Face and the Joker one last time. Bringing the city to peace, he finally faces an old ally who wants to take him down in a climatic finish! If the fight scenes between the 2 DC icons were not enough for you, then this movie would definitely satisfy your thirst!

2. Superman: Doomsday (2007)

A loose adaptation of the popular storyline and a much more proper depiction of the powerful villain in Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, this would be the first time Superman faces off against a opponent so powerful and evil that even the name itself would bring a sense of dread. The life of Metropolis’s citizens are forever changed by the arrival of Doomsday, no thanks to LexCorp. The homicidal creature destroys and rampages everything in sight till the timely arrival of Superman whose heroic sacrifice saves the city. Lois Lane and the citizens of Metropolis mourn their loss but apparently the hero then rises from the grave with a dark side…

3. Justice League: Doom (2009)

The film opens with the Justice League stopping the Royal Flush Gang from committing their diamond heist; unaware that it is a ploy by Vandal Savage to get Batman’s contingency plans for each of the Justice League members via his computer. As each member of the Justice League is taken down, including Superman, Batman must race against time to save them and come to a head on battle with the villains who orchestrated the whole affair.

4. Green Lantern: Emerald Knights (2009)

The tyrant Krona is approaching Oa, the homeworld of the Green Lanterns. As rookie Arisa Rrab converses with Hal Jordan, she learns about the history and other members of the Green Lantern Corp including The First Lantern, Kilowog during his rookie days, Laira and Abin Sur, Jordan’s predecessor. As the stories come to an end, Krona arrives and the Lanterns battle him with the universe on the line. If you didn’t like the live film adaptation, this animated film should do nicely for Green Lantern fans.

5. Batman: Assault on Arkham (2014)

I’m sure you have heard of the Suicide Squad movie that’s releasing this August. If you can’t wait for it, watch this! Amanda Waller, head of the Suicide Squad program assembles a group of rogues including Deadshot, Harley Quinn and Killer Frost to infiltrate Arkham to steal the Riddler’s cane and assassinate him. With nano-bombs implanted in their necks, they are forced to comply. The squad has to deal with rising tension within their own ranks while at the same time handle Batman who is hot on their trail! The Joker and Bane also make an appearance so you can be assured that this is one heck of an entertaining movie!

KONCENT Malaysia: a profound love for Japanese Art & Design

Japanese innovation has come a very long way since its invention of instant ramen. We could list a truly elongated list of products birthed out of the land of the rising sun that’s served us pretty damn well, whether in times of difficulty or during the leisurely moments. Considering how extensive their innovative products and designs are, it would come as no surprise if you are unaware of the vast majority of them. Cue KONCENT, a Tokyo-based design shop and cafe that introduces consumers to the realm of Japanese designs.

Tucked in the quaint streets of Petaling Jaya, we were greeted with classic Japanese friendliness (disclaimer: the shopkeepers are 100% Malaysian) by Mike Saw, Patrick Chin and Leonard Phang, the front liners of KONCENT Malaysia. Friends for well over a decade, Mike, Patrick and Leonard are design enthusiasts and have a profound love for Japanese art and design.

They first stumbled upon the idea of bringing KONCENT over to Malaysia when they came across a brand (“+d”) under KONCENT Tokyo while they were travelling across Singapore. Amazed by the various product designs showcased, a call was made to Tokyo and to their surprise they were given the green light to open an outlet locally.

I wanted to have a space where people can come, enjoy a cup of coffee and share a mutual interest in art & design and not feel intimidated.” -Mike.

While operating an interior and graphic design firm Pride Studio upstairs, they also manage a lifestyle boutique in Bangsar Shopping Centre called The Jekyll and Hyde Project.

Focusing on selling unique homeware alongside fun and functional goods, KONCENT houses an array of brands that depict Japan’s quirky innovation. Their best-seller is the Cao Maru, a stressball that allows you to relieve tension and change its facial expression at a whim. It has sold over 1,200 units to date.

One the brands that caught our eye is Soil that solely focuses on creating homeware made from diatomaceous earth- a highly absorbent material that retains water very efficiently and dries quickly- that comes in a hue of pastels. Imagine serving your guests cold beverages with coasters that absorbs water quickly and doesn’t make your social setting messy. It’s not something we considered to be essential initially, but after seeing it for ourselves it instantly shot up to being one of the top 10 items we would recommend for the household.

They don’t just sell super cool coasters and bath mats; items such as stationary, craftily created leather bags and other crazy innovations on conventional products are on display and for sale over at KONCENT Malaysia. To complement the entire KONCENT experience, the good folks there have set up a café corner in which visitors can get a cuppa and indulge in a selection of desserts by Hartamas’ Tray Cafe.

They also have a slew of design related periodicals for anyone to browse through and be inspired. So head down over to KONCENT Malaysia, grab a magazine, admire the aesthetic and functionality of the products, order a genmaicha and engage in a conversation with the shopkeepers. Either way, you won’t regret it.

Recap: Nike We Run 21K 2016

Perhaps one would stumble upon newfound appreciation of metropolitan Kuala Lumpur when they aren’t traversing the urban jungle in an automotive. On foot, congested highways and traffic lights aren’t quite so frustrating, making movement about the city roads that much more appealing. It’s doubly so if its made a sport of sorts.

The recently concluded Nike We Run 21K 2016 was all about running around the capital city, all the while flaunting your inner athlete… if you don’t give up that is. For those uninitiated to the world of running, Nike’s second half marathon, with 21km of urban landscape standing between you and the finish line, would have been nothing short of a gruelling affair.

Nevertheless, a wave of 8,987 runners took over the streets of Kuala Lumpur and pushed their limits to realize the true athlete in them with new 21K personal bests when the half-marathon took place earlier on 10th April. The running event came following a specially-curated 12-week training programme that was activated both digitally and on-ground.

“We are overwhelmed by the high-level of energy and enthusiasm from the runners today as we have witnessed the training journey of many from the time they registered, their participation in the training sessions we organized and finally to them completing their race today. We are proud to be able to motivate our runners to reach new levels as an athlete and look forward to continue to inspire them to keep aiming further in their journey as a runner,” said Angelene Chong, Country Marketing Manager for Nike Malaysia during the half-marathon.

The race route started at KL Sentral and took runners through some of the city’s iconic landmarks such as the Petronas Twin Towers and Stadium Merdeka. Throughout the route, runners found motivational messages, submitted by runners themselves, inspiring them to bring out their very best all the way to the finish line.

At the Nike We Run KL Race Village, participants were treated like athletes with post-run treatments such as on-demand stretching by Physiotherapists from Universiti Malaya as well as an ice-bath for their feet in the cooling zone.

Nike also set up an innovation showcasing the Nike Free Run Flyknit from the recently launched Summer 16 collection of Nike Free footwear for running.

“The services we’ve provided at the Race Village aim to replicate some of the post-race activities that professional athletes undergo. Our goal is to constantly invigorate the running scene in Malaysia as the interest and quality of runners continues to grow and improve rapidly here. With innovation and inspiration at the forefront of Nike, we want to bring a different experience to our athletes each year for them to always look forward to,” added Chong.

Missed out on all the action? Don’t worry, there’s always next year! If the amount of kilometres to cover seem a little daunting, you’ve got a year to train!
