Sleeping Under The Stars In Perak as documented by Photographer @Bryzoid.

After an amazing experience in Kuala Terengganu, we were bound toward the north side of Malaysia, our crosshairs locked upon the fourth largest state in the country, Perak. Along the journey, my mind was consumed by thoughts of digging into a delectable serving of Nasi Dagang. It was to be my first time having one, so please excuse my fascination. Every adventure isn’t just about having fun; what’s crucial is to take something home and share it with everyone, be it stories or general knowledge.

My experience in Perak is definitely the most educational chapter in this journey. What I learned was that forest fragmentation is a huge issue. As whole forests are reduced to fragments, important wildlife corridors are disconnected and forests are reduced to patches, effectively turning into islands. Isolated and detached, both wildlife and plants are exposed to higher risks of species loss and habitat degradation. The Central Forest Spine Initiative is a Malaysian project to reconnect all these fragments along the Titiwangsa range. Increasing the protected area of our forests ensures the long-term safeguarding of important ecological corridors, but where damage has already been done long-term restoration needs to be carried out.

This is where TRCRC comes in. They are reconnecting the Northern Banun forest complex to the Southern Temmengor forest complex in an attempt to re-establish important wildlife corridors. The Gerik-Jeli highway cuts through these two forests, and the state has recently built a fly-over called a viaduct to allow wildlife to cross. TRCRC will be restoring the forests around this viaduct over the next few decades, working with local agencies, communities and other NGOs to conserve threatened plant species from around the state, and to reconnect corridors for elephants, tigers and all the other wildlife in the area.

To put everything in a nutshell, conservation isn’t just important for animals but for all living organisms. Conservation is also very critical in preventing natural disasters such as floods and fires. I think the younger generation should get interested in conservation because it is important for us to realise how rapid the world is changing and if we’re not aware of it, there will be dire consequences.

In conclusion, Perak left me baffled at the beauty of the scenery and it was truly amazing to be out there. Sleeping under 100 million stars and gazing at it wishing the world would be peaceful just like that single moment. The landscape accomplishes beauty on its own and we’re here to witness it. Discovery is the heartbeat of every explorer and we venture on to seek with honesty.

The Covert Collective : Real Men Don’t Buy Girls

If you’ve never heard of The Covert Collective (because they’re covert, ahem), it’s a clothing line masterminded by duo Hannah Bhatt and Samuel Chew, a lawyer graduate and engineer by trade respectively that are driven by a collective passion for body art and street-wear.  Their print designs are all drawn by hand and screen printed manually on cotton t-shirts to ensure that they are of the highest quality.  Covert’s tee designs are all the brainchildren of Hannah, the lady-half of the duo.

This time around, her design is present in The Covert Collective’s latest tee, named ‘Real Men Don’t Buy Girls’, which bears a deformed illustration of a man with serpentine features on the eyes and face halfway through consuming a lady. It’s a powerful message against the prevalent issue of human trafficking in Malaysia, and Covert intends to highlight this disturbing reality in a powerful way.

The tee, the first of the Covert Gives series, is made in collaboration with local NGO Tenaganita with the aim of supporting various local charities and NGOs through specially designed t-shirts while raising awareness on this issue. The t-shirts will be priced at RM59 each while 100% of the profits will be donated to Tenaganita. The campaign is also supported by Light Show Photography as well as local artists Bil Musa and +2db.

The campaign and tee name is highly reminiscent of The Demi and Ashton Foundation’s (DNA) interactive video campaign launched way back in June 2011 that also went by the same name, which aimed to educate the public about child sex slavery in the United States.

While human trafficking may be a festering evil that tends to hide from the public eye, the issue is as real as it gets. Buy the shirt. The art is urban-street sexy and it’s a live broadcast that you are aware of, and against, treating anybody like cattle to be sold as you walk the streets.

The ‘Real Men Don’t Buy Girls’ tee and other products will be available for purchase on their website.

Tarik Jeans’ Latest Pull Factor: The Copper Stitch

Malaysia’s resident denimhead collective has just unleashed it’s latest “pull” factor that’s primed to reel in frothing bikers, rockers, punks and nostalgic 80s fashion enthusiasts into their stores. Tarik Jeans’ raw denim ‘Copper Stitch’ joins the ranks alongside it’s ‘Red Stitch’, ‘Green Stitch’ and ‘White Stitch” denim jeans, and is a perfect fit if you love your denim slim and seemingly body-conforming.

Designed in the classic Slim Ramlee cut, the 12.5 ounce limited edition pair contains 2% elastane, an elastic polyurethane material typically utilised in close-fitting attire (in case you care). It’s simple and slim denim with a focus on quality without an ounce of pretentious or flamboyant design, showcasing that if the classic formula works, why break it? Following the price range of its predecessors, you will be set back an affordable RM229 to own a pair of the ‘Copper Stitch’.

The brand itself believes that denim is integral to everyday dressing, and is adamant on filling the void as far as good local products are concerned, Tarik Jeans’ founder Afiq Iskandar says.

“With ‘The Copper Stitch’, we are again presenting a good local alternative to denim lovers across the country to be part of our family,” he says.

Since its debut in the market back in 2009, the brand has had several releases comprising mostly jeans in a selection of fits, t-shirts, jackets, chambray ‘Baju Melayu’ and caps.

Tarik Jeans’ products are available at Kronoz Denim in Fahrenheit Plaza, LOKA in NU Sentral Mall and Showroom Skate behind Berjaya Times Square. Check out its full collection over here!

Monday Juice: Takeru Featuring Darren Ashley “Odyssey”

This week, “Bolehland” meets the Land of the Rising Sun thanks to a musical collaboration between local artist Darren Ashley and Tokyo-born singer, songwriter and producer Takeru. Darren has just dropped his Monday juice track titled “Odyssey“, which was fully produced by both Takeru and Darren while the lyrics were also done by them too. “Both of us sat in a room and composed this. We started making the track last year and since he (Takeru) lives in Jakarta now, we decided to finish the track when he came down for holiday. Which was Saturday two days ago” said Darren.

The result is a track that would make a perfect serenade for your loved one, accentuated by its smooth R&B vibes and a melody that possesses a soothing, almost tranquil quality to it. Go ahead and have a listen to their song down below.

If you want to listen to more of his Monday Juices tracks with other talented artists do head down to his official page at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Soundcloud.
