MASSESzine: 7th Edition is Up and Away!

In an attempt to encapsulate the freedom and exhilaration awarded by grinding wheels onto pavement, we will delve into the land surfing world of skateboarding in our 7th issue of MASSESzine!

Very much a Southern California tradition, skateboarding defined many a childhood, while influencing an entire culture based on making a playground out of anywhere with solid ground.

We take a look at the sport’s rich history, pick the minds of various personalities for a personalized view of the local skating scene, and get in touch with prominent icon in the global skateboarding scene to chat about a brand so influential to the culture, some would argue the brand itself is synonymous to skateboarding.

Vans geeks in particular are going to love this issue as we give you a series of articles covering a collection of the brand’s stylish sneakers, the shoemaker’s history from the eyes of the founder’s son, and interviews with some local Vans enthusiasts that are prominent within our niche community.

Anyway, I know I’m a little late to say this, but…Surprise! This marks the first time the foreword for an issue of MASSESzine isn’t written by our resident Buddha. He’s a little too busy bringing enlightenment with his shiny bald head, so here I am in his place.

Um… yeah. Hi!

Till next time!

Celebrating 50 years of Creative Expression with the Story of Vans

In a tribute to the 50 year heritage of arguably the most iconic name in the streetwear scene, Vans has unleashed its most recent visual campaign that marries several artistic methods to highlight significant, “Off the Wall” moments throughout the brand’s illustrious existence.

It’s gargantuan global footprint as the original action sports footwear and apparel brand has sent massive shock waves to youth cultures across the world since its humble beginnings as the Van Doren Rubber Company in 1966 at Anaheim, Calif. Back then, the company manufactured deck shoes on its premises and sold them directly to the public.  Vans’ rugged make-up and rubber sole made them the perfect companion for skateboarding and they were quickly adopted by the rising subculture. This ignited the start of many “Off The Wall” memories in action sports, art, music and fashion over the next 50 years, rendering a simple pair of canvas shoes into a platform for creative expression around the world.

With today signifying the brand’s 50th anniversary, the spirit and tale of Vans will today be beautifully retold through the global launch of The Story of Vans.

The Story of Vans exemplifies the milestones that have made Vans the unique brand it is today and the inventive composition of the campaign allows us to bring those moments to life through an interactive experience at the House of Vans worldwide,” said Kevin Bailey, Vans and VF Action Sports President.

The Story of Vans blends diverse animation methods to create one distinctive visual treatment in a campaign that illustrates the brand’s origins in action sports, art, music and street culture. Directed by Reza Resoli from Pet Gorilla, the campaign utilises forced perspective drawings, traditional cell animation, paper cut outs and timeless Vans footwear, which are all stop motion animated in an intricately choreographed celebration of the brand

The visual experience, made up of a series of five short stories, is brought to life via French artists Mrzyk & Moriceau’s whimsical black and white illustrations and a soundtrack produced by music house Beta Petrol, who brought together different musical collaborators ranging from Tortoise’s John Herndon to Wayne Kramer from the MC5.

Each short story is narrated by a renowned individual and long-time Vans enthusiast, including professional skateboarder and historian of the sport Jeff Grosso who voiced the leading story, and iconic skateboarding legend Tony Alva that recalled his own history with Vans in the action sports short.

Artist and musician Ray Barbee, Chuck D of Public Enemy and fashion icon and actress Chloe Sevigny lend their vocals for the art, music and fashion shorts, respectively.

From New York to London to Hong Kong, the culmination of The Story of Vans campaign and Vans’ 50-year legacy will come to life at 10 House of Vans locations across the globe starting tonight.

Each House of Vans event will include D.I.Y workshops, shoe personalization, a retrospective look at Vans’ history and curated musical performances from the likes of Nas, Dinosaur Jr, Wu-Tang Clan, The Kills, Erykah Badu, Jamie xx, Dizzee Rascal, Yeasayer, Shlohmo and more. Vans skateboarding legends and professional athletes will also be in attendance for skate demos and signings.

Salivating in anticipation yet? Head on over to www.houseofvans.com to get in on the action and learn more about the experience! Do check up on www.vans.com to watch The Story of Vans and share your own Vans story using #since66.

Top 5 Nike Sneaker Moments in Movies You Probably Missed

movie poster

The silver screen is a fantastic medium for sneaker brands to market their wares to the masses, provided it is executed in a way that looks unforced and sensible. We may dislike product adverts being sneakily implanted in movies, but it’s a marketing stunt that sometimes just works. There have been a substantial number of sneaker moments in movie history, though we know it would be rather stale if we mention Back To The Future again. So, we present you with the Top 5 Nike Sneaker Moments in Movies (in no particular order) that you probably missed.

1. Jumpman Bat Boot.

Considering superhero motion pictures are in trend right now, we think it is a good idea to provide a little history on Batman and Nike’s relationship for those who may not be aware of it.

The relationship could be seen for the first time when Nike’s Air Trainer 3 was featured in 1989’s Batman. A perfect fit for the Gotham crusader’s stunt-filled shenanigans, actor Michael Keaton and stuntmen loved the shoe so much that Nike provided the footwear for Batman’s second outing. That time around, Air Jordan was designed for another Michael than Michael Jordan. The 6s was revamped into a combat boot for Michael Keaton as Batman in the 1992 movie “Batman Returns”. It comes as no surprise that Nike’s partnership with Warner Bros made it possible to combine Batman with the Jumpman.

2. George Of The Jungle With The Big Air.

This Tarzan parody may be reviled by some moviegoers for its over-the-top setting and snooze-worthy plot, but “George of the Jungle” is occasionally hilarious in its ridiculousness.

The movie incorporated a scene where our baboon brain protagonist opens a Nike box containing the Air More Untempo, puts it on then proceeds to sprint back to a jungle in Africa. A+ for marketing effort, but up pops a question: why is George wearing a basketball shoe instead of a running shoe for… well, running?

3. Knock Off Version of The Air Max2 Charles Barkley in JumanjiScreen Shot 2016-03-15 at 3.36.29 PM

nike-air-max2-cb-94-og-release-date-1The young boy version of Robin Williams’ character Alan is the scion of a footwear factory owner, whose facility provided for their town during its prime. A worker at his dad’s factory showed Alan this Nike basketball shoe and claimed, “If I can get Wilt Chamberlain to wear them, I predict there will be a pair of these in every closet in America.”

By the looks of the silhouette, we can tell that is the Air Max 2 Charles Barkley. What’s peculiar is the shoe is imprinted with the word “Parrish” instead of the expected Nike logo. We have no idea whether this is a legit product placement or just another kick off.

4. Remember Wear Your Vandals To Fight Arnold.

In the original Terminator (1984), Michael Biehn wore Nike Vandals while playing Kyle Reese. One detail that Terminator fans will appreciate from the recreation, Terminator Genisys (2015), is the part when character Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) quickly gets dressed on the run with Nike Vandals, just like the character did in the first episode. The costume designers even begged Nike to reproduce the sneakers and they succeeded.

5. Air Jordan 2 “Space Jam” (we mean AJ2 in Space Jam).

Talking about Space Jam, everyone will automatically lay their eyes on the holy grail colourway of the Air Jordan XI. However, don’t forget who actually assisted Jordan while the Looney Tune Team was down by a single point with only 10 seconds left. Without any available players to fill the fifth slot, Bill Murray materialized out of nowhere and was ready to play. What is more notable than his no-look pass to Jordan to beat the buzzer is the pair of ‘Chicago’ Jordan 2 he had laced up.
