HISTORY101: The Vans Slip-On Pro ’82

Fast-Times-at-Ridgemont-High-Gallery-4

In typical rebellious teen fashion, a band of SoCal secondary school students are fixated on subjects outside conventional education curriculum: sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. Smells like the 80s, doesn’t it, but that’s because it is. In 1982, the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High hit the silver screen with that as it’s backdrop. Based on real-life experiences as chronicled by Cameron Crowe, the story is centred around young Jeff Spicoli, a surfer jock that is constantly stoned who is at odds with Mr Hand, who is completely certain that everyone is on the joint.

It’s high school drama with a rockstar’s list of desires thrown in for good measure, making for a well-received film. The story told in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, however, is ultimately unimportant here. For sneaker icon Vans, what mattered is that this movie catapulted its Classic Slip-On, with its distinctive checkerboard print, into the limelight.

When Sean Penn’s stoned character Jeff was seen with the shoe in the movie, it cemented the checkerboard slip-on into the hearts of sneakerheads for years to come. Apparently, Universal Studios had asked Vans to send over some shoe options for the film, and back then the footwear company had no particular intention to market the checkerboard slip-on. However, Sean Penn picked it up as part of the look for his character, and he can be seen knocking himself in the head with it in the trailer.

A domino effect ensued as requests for the slip-on soar the moment people previewed the film, and it was later featured conspicuously on the cover of the movie’s soundtrack.

Note that it took a few years for the checkboard print to emerge as an iconic symbol of the Vans legacy. The creation of Vans style #48, which is the Classic Slip-On, pre-dates Fast Times at Ridgemont High by 6 years. Somewhere in the late 70s, Steve Van Doren discovered that teen skaters were colouring the rubber midsole of their shoe with black pens to create a checkerboard look. Inspired, he moved this aesthetic to the canvas upper to create the look we all know and love in 1977.

Thanks to Vans 50th Anniversary Collection, the Classic Slip-On has now gone Pro with the Slip-On Pro ’82. The upgraded checkerboard pair is a homage to the film that almost single-handedly ignited its explosion in popularity on the global stage.

Moral of the story? Advertise in potentially great films.

Local indie rockers the likes of Bittersweet, Froya and electronic duo +2dbocking will be rocking the stage while Lapsap, Tubb, Jee Hoe & Mmmeng and Irama will be on the decks.

The affair comprises more than just performances and food; there will also be a bigger games element this time around as Zouk KL will have a life-size Jenga for you to toy around with while TREC will have beer pong and vintage retro games from the good ol’ Atari, Nintendo, and Playstation 1 at Electric Boulevard.

HISTORY101: The Vans Mid Skool Pro ’79

rsz_1vans_31

The Z-Boys skateboarding team has already been mentioned a couple of times here, but they’re worth repeated acknowledgement as far as the skateboard culture is concerned. While this Californian group has collectively defined the pavement-surfing activity as we now know it, today we will focus on a particular Z-Boy that was well woven into the fabric of Vans’ footwear evolution.

Honoured as one of the greatest pioneering skateboarders the world has yet seen, Tony Alva is one of the reasons the Z-Boy and Vans legacies are somewhat intertwined. A surfer and skateboarder since the tender age of 11 way back in 1968, Tony’s style in grinding wheels to pavement was bold and aggressive, and that style influenced Vans to make shoes embedded in skater-driven design and built for progression. His free form surf style is largely, if not entirely, derived from the then new surfing form gaining prominence in the Hawaiian Islands.

The original Mid Skool ’79 was Tony’s signature shoe and was yet another innovative skateboarder-oriented pair that beckoned the influx of mid-top shoes in the following years.

The reinvented Mid Skool Pro ’79 carries the same ethos Tony brought to skateboarding. Maintaining the same blue & white aesthetic as its original counterpart, the Pro ’79 features a premium suede and canvas upper with a lightly padded collar and tongue, and the Vans original waffle outsole with reinforced abrasion areas for further cushioning and support.

If roleplaying as the legend himself is something you want to get into, then be sure to get yourself a pair of this reinvented classic!

Palladium introduces new prints in its Spring-Summer 2016 Collection

Heritage boot brand Palladium has expanded its range of footwear with new prints introduced in its Spring-Summer 2016 collection. Boasting new fashion silhouettes, a fresh seasonal colour palette and iconic prints, the collection reimagines floral, paisley, polka-dot and camouflage patterns with a modern twist. The boot brand also introduces a line of athleisure-inspired silhouettes that take design cues from the brand’s signature aesthetic, such as the rubber toecap and canvas lining.

Each shoe is designed in the context of city exploration, so you can be sure that every pair will offer comfort for traversing urban environments while remaining trendy when doing so.

Here’s a look at some of the patterns offered by this collection:

Floral

Floral Print

A classic emblem of femininity, the floral pattern was once a hard-to-come-by status symbol. In 1979, British manufacturers created a solution to mass-produce the print and florals have since become a closet staple. Palladium introduces its own rose floral pattern onto one of its most feminine silhouettes, the Baggy Heel. Perfect for transitional spring weather, the floral-printed Baggy Heel is available in three colourways, namely Black-Red-Pink-Roses, Black-White-Red-Roses and Salmon Pink-Linen-Roses.

Polka-Dot

Flex Lace PD Blue RM299

From Minnie Mouse’s dress to high fashion looks designed by Christian Dior, the polka dot pattern is a go-to look for both casual and upscale dressing. Palladium updates its top selling Flex Collection with the playful print. The polka dot print will be offered in the Flex Lace and Flex Ballet silhouettes in black, blue, gray and peach.

Multicam

03713_995_007 (1)

The French heavily used the camouflage pattern during World War I and usage of the print boomed during the Vietnam and Gulf Wars. Today, the print is a street style mainstay. For Spring-Summer 2016, Palladium has executed a Multicam variation on its Pampa Hi boot. The Multicam print is offered in four colours, which are Original Camo, Tropic Camo, Black Camo and Arid Camo.

The entire collection will hit local shores in May 2016, so stayed tuned if you’re looking to grab a pair of these gorgeous shoes!

The festival aims to inspire others to celebrate life with their innovative and contemporary concepts. It’s an event that embraces new influences and draws inspiration from people around the globe, accepts the multitude of existing cultures, and urges conservation of the places we wish to make memories in.

The three-day festival will be held in the Perhentian Island of Terengganu, Malaysia. The doors to the festival will be open from April 30th all the way to May 2nd 2016. During Oceansation’s inaugural launch last year, the festival accommodated a solid 300 youths and has since garnered recognition within the outdoor community.

The event will be packed with a variety of games and activities ranging from morning yoga sessions and jungle trekking to splashing good times in the water with Malaysia’s first Human Launcher, not to mention other activities like Iceberg, Slip N’ Slide, Slackline, snorkeling and fishing. Even as the midday waves farewell, there will be no shortage of engaging diversions such as beach soccer, volleyball and traditional games.

Oceansation is tailored to satisfy the wanderlust of the music and nature enthusiast. This year’s festival will also include creative arts installations, performing arts from dikir barat to wayang kulit, sand sculptures, stomping and more.

In addition, the event offers a comfortable fun-filled space thanks to the on-site camping ground environment. To get to Perhentian Island, Oceansation offers their own boat transfers from the mainland, where services are arranged by a local transportation company. For land transportation from the main city of Kuala Lumpur to Perhentian Jetty, Oceansation offers round- trips express buses which guests can purchase along with the festival ticket.
