5° North Music Festival

5° North Music Festival is a music festival which aims to bring the celebration of local music up here to Penang, as more than often, events like this are held outside of Penang. Organised by CluelessArt, and supported by Bose, 5° North Music Festival will be a whole day of music ranging from rap to beach pop to post-hardcore, and even to some electronic music to end the night. Hosted in the iconic Hin Bus Art Depot, previously an old dilapidated bus depot that has since been restored into an art centre, people will be accompanied by food, drinks, clothing vendors, street art and more importantly amazing, local music. Besides, they will also be having an online band contest where the 2 bands with the highest votes on the contest, get to play 2 opening slots for the day.
5° North Music Festival FINAL POSTER
The theme is the era when Francis Light founded Prince of Wales Island, or as we now call it- Penang Island. The lady in the poster is Martina Rozells, bearer of Francis Light’s children. I say bearer and not wife as they were not allow to marry due to Martina being a catholic and Francis Light being a protestant. They were hampered down by society’s do’s and don’ts, society’s right and wrongs. They could have chosen to give in to the pressure that their society at the time put on them to be “perfect”, but they refused to give in to that pressure. They refused to let anyone tell them how to live their lives, and they chased their dreams regardless of the circumstances surrounding them. That is essentially what the music industry in Malaysia is like. People are constantly telling musicians that music will not feed them, music will not pay your bills, music is not a career, music is just a hobby, you need something to sustain you longer. But these musicians, they absolutely refused to succumb to our current society’s take on music and decided to chase their dreams making music, singing their hearts out, letting people hear the song that resonates in their hearts and souls. Regardless of what the 1770s society told Francis Light and Martina Rozells, they raised smart, courageous, beautiful children, one of which who went on to be the founder of Adelaide, Australia. However, not much else was known about Martina Rozells. Her origins, and life story are very much unknown and mysterious, just like the girl in the poster. Mysterious. But courageous.
Tickets can be bought at various locations in Penang as well as by post. For more on 5° North Music Festival please check out their Facebook Page.

RECAP : Showroom KL Flagship Store Opening

At the 11th of October, we attended the opening party of Showroom’s second store, Showroom KL Flagship Store. The store is just located behind Berjaya Times Square, above of Stussy KL. Showroom has been around for more than 10 years, and it’s one of the skateboarding / streetwear store that has survived for more than 10 years. The door opened at 4PM, and there was a lot people queue-ing outside of the store to get in. On that day, DC Shoes Malaysia was also there to showcase their latest collaboration collection with Cyrcle. It was a night filled with good vibe, everyone’s enjoying the performances, food, and drinks. Skaters were having fun skating at the in-store skate ramp as well! Slam Dunk x Jordan Brand Footwear Collection Detailed Look

IMG_9945

Jordan Brand has teamed up with Takehiko Inoue’s iconic Japanese manga ‘Slam Dunk’ for a collaboration project. As the sports-themed manga is deeply influenced by Michael Jordan’s own career, both the Air Jordan VI and Super. Fly 3 play as canvases to Slam Dunk storyboards. The AJ VI features a Hanamichi Sakuragi graphic matted across the paneled upper and the moments of his rise in the series. The number ’10’ (Sakuragi’s jersey number) was also being plotted to the shoe and replaced Jordan’s signature number ’23’. Meanwhile, the Super. Fly 3 features Inoue’s creation of modern version of Sakuragi, with the prints seen across the upper that never be published outside of the shoe.

The collection will be available at Hoops Station via VIP balloting on this Saturday.

MAXIMUNITY Fall Winter 2014 Collection

6

Maximunity, a brand with the Sub-Rosa logo. Maybe you are not familiar with the Sub-Rosa. During the French Revolution, the rebels used the sub-rosa for exchanging info or leaving marks. Maximunity used Sub-Rosa as their logo because they are not just making clothes but also try to deliver some subtle message about politics, humanity, socialism etc to the society.

When they are doing these graphic printings on t-shirts, their wordings are inspired by Chinese “Wu Xia” novel. What’s so special about the “Wu Xia” novel is it doesn’t have wrath and untouchable characters which usually appear in normal genre novel, simplified that there are just good and bad guys. But in the “Wu Xia” novel, the author gives the both sides very strong characteristics like the good guy will have some weakness and the bad guy will also have some humanity appearance when it comes to particular plot or scene. It makes the whole story much more closer to our reality life, and balance the conflicts of both side. That’s why it is so interesting. In their new collection, they are trying to bring the fun play of Chinese philosophy which about balance and play it with modern form of graphic art. Maximunity hopes that they can bring the message that sometimes it isn’t that good when good things happen, and sometimes bad isn’t that bad.

Before they successfully or completely establish their brand image, their collection are still around the silhouette of goth and street wear (skate wear). When comes to designing clothes and graphic prints, they are staying focus on seeking a balance of mixture between street culture, bikers wear, gothic, punk and try to deliver some subtle message about humanity.

Basically, thy are not preparing their collection with one concept per collection, but practicing a different way on making clothes, which every new collection was like they are providing a different view but actually observing a same object.
