adidas Partners Up With David Beckham To Launch The Ultraboost DB99

1999 was a lot of things for everyone. It was the turn of the millennium for the most of us, I had just turned 4, and we’re on a hyperjump when it comes to technology. For David Beckham however, it transcends all that. He was on a career high, had just married Posh from Spice Girls, and had his first child, and led Manchester United to score the treble in the English Premier League. Momentous is an understatement.

Hence why in the latest edition of the Ultraboost 19, adidas have decided to pay homage to this very significant year with Beckham, naming the running shoe the Ultraboost 19 DB99. Inspiration is fairly obvious, with DB standing for his initials and 99 the significant year that he wants to share with the world.

“1999 was an important year for me, in terms of both career development and personal life. So, this pair of shoes is extraordinarily special to me,” said David in an interview. “The colours chosen for the design are white with a flash of orange. I have always loved white trainers. The eye-catching fluorescent orange and the letters DB99 in black are a perfect match.”

DB99 is printed on the tongue and soles of the shoe, whilst the breathing pads on the sides and sole have been enlarged for better breathability during training. Elsewhere, the Ultraboost 19 upgrades the missing pieces of the Ultraboost, featuring more Boost in the midsole, a new type of knit called the 360 Primeknit Vamper, while retaining the Torsion System to ensure stability during running.

The adidas Ultraboost X DB99 is set to retail at RM 850 and is available to purchase at all major adidas outlets in Kuala Lumpur and Genting.

Nike Has Redeveloped The Pegasus Turbo To Be Completely Resilient Towards Rain

To some people, there is absolutely no excuse not to run, but sometimes bad weather can be hampering to these schedules, and especially with the torrential downpour and strong wind that’s been hitting the Klang Valley, you may be walking away with more than just being miserably wet and freezing cold.

For these dark months then, welcome everyone, to the Nike Pegasus Turbo Shield. Yes, the moniker may sound a little tacky, but it does exactly what it’s advertised to do. The upper is reworked so that it is completely resistant to water, the seams are sealed to ensure that no splashes can get in, the outsole is slightly redesigned to channel water out of the way, and the rubber is replaced with a grippier version ensuring no traction is loss on wet surfaces. A heel strap and zip ensures you’re able to personalise the fit.

The upper gets blacked out with the medial portion cladded in purple, while the outsole is split down the centre in black and volt for added visibility.

The price for all these upgrades? RM 845. Steep, but when you’re not making any excuses, is RM 845 too high of an expense? The Nike Pegasus Turbo Shield is available to purchase online now.

In Need For A Modern Family Sedan? The Volvo S60 Is Your Answer

Imagine this. A small, family sized sedan, that completes the century sprint in 4.4 seconds — on par with most sports cars, comes fully equipped with a full suite of safety features, rated at only 2 litres per 100km (provided you don’t jam the throttle every time), and can comfortably sit 4. Normally, hearing this would warrant a hefty price after reading the mounts of features that the car is equipped with, but the Volvo S60 sits squared against the Audi A4, Mercedes C300, and BMW 330i M Sport, at only RM 296,000.

The platform sits on Volvo’s new Scalable Platform Architecture, which means it shares the same underpinnings with all of its brothers and siblings in the family. The engine is a twin-charged (turbocharged and supercharged) 2.0 litre driving the front wheels while an electric motor gives 87 bhp of push to the rears. As only the T8 (range topper) model is coming to our shores, the car is equipped with Volvo’s latest set of safety features and other niceties that elevate the driving experience.

The dashboard, center console and other things in the interior all remain the same; a tall LCD display dominates the center, flanked by the fully digital dashboard that is all too familiar, seen in other models. Whereas the XC90 gets a crystal gear knob, the S60 makes do with a standard plastic version.

A sports car, it is not however deceiving the looks may be. Yes, the headline figures are there, 404 bhp and 640 Nm thrusts you up and down NKVE at a relatively brisk pace before being tapped at 250 km/h, but you have to remember however, that it is a Volvo first and foremost, which means driver comfort and efficiency. The numbers that should matter when it comes to cars like these are that it emits less Carbon Dioxides than your average sedan (122g CO2/per km) and if you take care to not jam the throttle at every possible moment, it’s relatively easy to get 16 kilometres per litre.

This is a car you want to take on a comfortable high speed cruise, saving the world while you’re at it. The Volvo S60 is now up for sale at all Volvo dealerships nationwide.

Nike Preps For A Spooky Drop With The Sacai Blazers

If the first wave of Sacai X Nike Blazers represented a more vibrant treatment and expansive insight into Chitose Abe’s versatility, the second wave proves just how masterful she can be when presented with one spectrum.

The collaborative Blazers are a popular model, and this toned-down palette still packs a visual punch in white and wolf grey, albeit easier to process visually. Details aren’t hidden through clever use of colour blocking, ensuring none of the layers are sunken within one another. Usual details are still present and accounted for, from the double lacing, double tongue, and double swoosh.

The Nike X Sacai Blazer “White/Wolf Grey” will be available on Nike on the 31st of October for RM 579.

Kenji Chai Gets His First UNIQLO UTme! Collaboration

Walk around the streets of KL and you’ll be sure to find an artwork tagged with Kenji Chai. As ubiquitous as he is famous, Kenji’s artworks have appeared on numerous murals, including the big Nando’s artwork at Petaling Street, to a mural of a tiger on The Bee, Publika.

His emotive use of vibrant colours, clean lines, and combined elements of nature and positive energy is representative of his trademark style. The artist’s most recognised marking is his signature character, a charming dog named Chaigo, a bright turquoise dog that takes inspiration from the strays who live on the streets to survive each passing day. A symbol of persistence, in other words.

Happening exclusively at UNIQLO Fahrenheit 88, customers can explore the app on the tablets available in-store to customise their own UTme! shirts with a myriad of artworks specially designed for this collaboration.

Apart from shirts, tote bags are also available for printing. Each process will take approximately 15 minutes, depending on the length of the queue and complexity of design.

The printing service is available on the 1st of November, exclusively at UNIQLO Fahrenheit 88.

Virgil’s IKEA Markerad Collection Will Be Available To Purchase Tomorrow

By now, the world knows who Virgil Abloh is. Disruptive artist, menswear designer, and an icon of which many people love to have many doubts over, the list continues. Regardless, the so-called Renaissance Man has changed the industry, and is about to do it once again with IKEA, with the new Markerad collection.

A range of everyday objects, from clocks to chairs are subtly modified to add a bit of a designer touch to an otherwise normal ensemble.

“The ethos of the collection is to add an artful quality to anonymous objects.” – Virgil Abloh, designer

“It’s about elevating the anonymous, everyday icons that we use without noticing. When we put a doorstop on one of the legs of an ordinary chair we create something unexpected – an interruption,” laments Virgil. It goes deeper than just replacing a chair leg with a door stop. Perhaps it is a higher plane of consciousness that we aren’t exposed to, and simply do not understand. Perhaps he’s just mad, but whatever you make out of it, there is no doubt of its impact on people, positive or negative. After all, it is an interruption to the usual train of mundane thoughts.

The IKEA Markerad collection releases tomorrow at IKEA Cheras, IKEA Damansara, and IKEA Batu Kawan under a First Come First Served Basis, with each customer limited to only 2 items. Prices range from RM 39.90 to RM 1490. For more info, head on to the website. Will you be copping?

We Caught Up With Pastel Lite To Talk About Pop Bilik Tidur, Exploring A New Sound, And Transition To Using Bahasa Malaysia

Written by J.L

At the height of the metal phenomenon, when most gigs were still dominated and headlined by the likes of Massacre Conspiracy and The Padangs, not many dared to go out and do something totally different. From smaller gigs at Munkee Studio to bigger arenas like Rock The World, everyone just wanted to headbang. Couple, however, played at the infamous lecak- party of a Rock The World concert at Padang Merbok, was greeted with a crescendo of singalong where bootboys, metalheads and indie folks joined arms to celebrate their Pop, as if it never left the Top. Couple and a few other indie bands at the time were considered an exception for pop, but beyond them, pop was a word of taboo in the surface of the underground scene, predominantly because it’s usually associated with overproduced jingles you listen to on the radio.

I’ve heard the story of how Faliq met Eff a few times already: Faliq admired Eff’s singing style, both met online and a few meetups after, Pastel Lite was formed. The mass music fans first enjoyed the taste of their version of pop through the WKND sessions, where they performed a few of their stellar singles at the time, including ‘Underdog’. But the release that brought them to fame, was Balada, which was their first album and first record under Yuna Room Records. Songs like ‘Aneh’ and ‘Masa Kita’ shown Faliq and Eff’s mastery as they introduced a version of pop that Malaysians have missed and with that, enticed YRR to produce another record: Pop Bilik Tidur.

““Pop Bilik Tidur” is basically our second album under the label Yuna Room Records. It is our first venture into making a fully malay language album. The album consist of sounds and styles that borrows from 80s, Synthpop, Disco and nostalgia pop influences that are being painted in a bedroom pop production style (that is definitive of Pastel Lite),” laments Eff. “The heart of the album is basically what we wish Malaya pop music would sound like today whilst paying homage symbolically to 80s icon like Francissca Peters and Noorkumalasari whilst mixing it up with new influences from new wave sounds that is current and new.”

What’s interesting, is that there seems to be some sort of a continuity in Pop Bilik Tidur, from their first album Balada. But I guess that’s how a lot of musicians write their albums you know, because there will always be bits and pieces of your first album in your next ones. The case is similar with Pastel Lite, even though Pop Bilik Tidur is a whole animal in itself.

‘We like to think that we’ve learnt a lot from the making of Balada that we think is crucial information that can be used in the making of Pop Bilik Tidur, but to be fair, who wants to keep doing the same thing? We’ve never been a fan of staying in our comfort zone and being safe and repetitive. With the new album, we wanted to do it with a different approach, a different language, energy and vibe all together. It is safe to say that Pop Bilik Tidur is it’s own thing and can’t really be compared to all our other works.’

For older fans, who layan their music since the first EP, Pastel Lite was always known as a duo that’s more English-centric. But something clicked, sometime after Etcetera, and through Eff’s instastories, you could see that the singer-songwriter was keen in writing in Bahasa. Well, it’s safe to say that her efforts didn’t go to waste, because Pastel Lite’s number one hit on Spotify is a song in Bahasa.

“Honestly, it was an excruciating yet soul full-filling task.  I had to dive deep into my roots to figure out the kind of narrative I want to use in Bahasa that is Pastel Lite and at the same time is an expressive platform for us to be able to get our stories across. But it wasn’t as daunting as it sound. I was raised in Sabah and I am from a malay background, writing in malay was a small part in my life, I just needed a way to tap into that especially for this new album,” Eff said.

For Pop Bilik Tidur, not only that they’re focusing more on Bahasa Malaysian songs, the duo brought in a legend in the Bahasa pop scene: Naza of the Times. Naza was an instrumental member of OAG, and now continues to play for his band The Times after a long break from performing. Faliq made it clear that Naza was a musical hero of his — so he brought the frontman’s voice to grace their first single of the album, ‘Hello Sayang’.

2nd from the left: Naza of The Times

“It was an amazing experience to be able to meet your hero let alone work with him,” Faliq recalls. “Eff showed me the demo of ‘Hello Sayang’ prior to this and I remember thinking “Naza would just be perfect for the second verse”. I just couldn’t picture anyone else for the song. When he listened to the demo he was excited to be on board. We couldn’t believe it. It was just surreal! He gave us his support and pretty much his blessings.”

However, Naza wasn’t the only big name to be involved in the album. As the record label owner, award-winning singer-songwriter Yuna also put out a few golden touches to Pop Bilik Tidur.

“Being in Yuna Room Records, Yuna has obviously been apart of our decision making,” the both of them said. “But she has been nothing but kind and nurturing. She gave us ideas every now and then. And she is always in tune with what we want, giving us ample freedom to create and be ourselves. She has helped us with arrangements, concept idea, visuals and just being musicians in general. We highly appreciate every input she has given us so far.”
