An Upin & Ipin Movie Just Got Nominated For The 2020 Oscars

Upin & Ipin was a pioneering cartoon back when the Malaysian animation scene was just only starting out to get into 3D animation. Now, from the success of the series, spawned new 3D cartoons from the likes of Boboiboy and Ejen Ali. Coupled with a good scriptwriting, a relatable background, and often pulling on the Malaysian humour strings, Upin & Ipin proved to be a stalwart series in Malaysian cartoons.

And it’s about damn time that we’re recognised internationally for our efforts, as Upin & Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal (Lone Gibbon Keris) is nominated for Best Animated Feature, competing against star studded names such as Toy Story 4, Frozen 2, Addams Family, Angry Birds 2, and How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.

Whether or not the movie wins the title is a different story, but the fact that it can stand up there with the best of the rest, means that we are good enough for the world stage. We have made our point, and will continue to do so in the coming age, because Malaysia Boleh!

Keris Siamang Tunggal was released this March, garnering a total of RM 25 million at the box office and was briefly Malaysia’s number 1 animated film before being surpassed by BoBoiBoy Movie 2.

Should The Nike Vaporfly Next Percent Be Banned From Marathons?

A shoe that breaks records. A bold marketing campaign by the Swoosh, and one claim many thought couldn’t be substantiated, or simply didn’t believe in its ability to deliver what it said.

Until it did.

So much records were broken in fact. Dennis Kimetto, a previous marathon record holder of 2:2:57 has had his time shattered by 5 other athletes wearing the same shoe. Brigid Kosgei broke the women’s marathon world record the following day after Eliud Kipchoge set the unofficial best time of 1:59:40, and Kipchoge himself wore a prototype Alpha Fly during his running efforts. It’s apparent then, that the Vaporfly Next% has helped numerous athletes become the human interpretation of a hypercar.

Much like over in the realm of internet gaming where the developer cracks down on players who suddenly become too good, the International Association of Athletics Federation has launched their own probe after a series of complaints by other runners that the shoe gave its user an unfair competitive advantage. It’s not just a baseless complaint either, as when the New York Times logged almost half a million marathoners’ times, they found out that runners wearing Vaporflys were indeed 3% – 4% faster on average compared to the normal time. Some even went as far as to say that the shoes had built-in mini springs that helped runners propel forward even farther, which is actually a valid concern, as Athletic Propulsion Labs actually developed a basketball shoe with embedded springs that actually gave wearers 10% – 15% more air time than a standard shoe, but I digress.

All in all, it boils down to clever engineering on Nike’s part as well as teetering between what’s legal or not in the IAAF rulebook. Of course, Nike heralds its Zoom X technology to be the best foam in the world, stretching the viability of the material to the absolute limit without it decompressing or denaturing to give maximum comfort and bounce, but apart from that, was also the Swoosh’s decision to add a carbon fibre plate to boost said propulsion. It’s no spring, but compare it to a diving board, and you have a rough idea of how the plate works. A subtler and arguably more elegant solution, without it defiling anything under the IAAF’s nose.

It begets the question then, should innovation be stifled so that it needs to match with what the other brands are putting out?

From here on out, marathon’s are only going to get faster as technology progresses across the board. It’s not just the shoes, it’s also the type of training they go under, the type of food they eat, and the type of conditions that they run in. And once in a while, a generational prodigy with Herculean legs will come around and forces us to rethink what’s possible when it comes to running.

Maybe it’s a good thing that the delta has been shifted. It means that other brands will have to catch up if they want to be competitive, and then by the ways of a cyclic movement, the curve will center out again, and the playing field will be level once more.

Yuna Visualises How It Feels Like To Be A Castaway In Her Latest MV

Written by Evely Tan

As Rouge opens with a hotly anticipated song that features Tyler, The Creator on opposite ends finding reasons to blame each other, we now have a music video to visualise the agony and indifference that the two are feeling.

Directed by Adam Sinclair, “Castaway” sets the stage in an antique American suburban home, with drawers of clothes strewn all over the floor, and Yuna sitting in a recliner, her face painting a scene of contemplation and slight sorrow as she’s ostracized herself from the relationship, subsequently recalling what happened in between them that has ended in her distancing. Tyler then counters with his side of the story, depicting that it was the result of both of their individual actions that wedged the relationship further.

Storying “Castaway” with impressive cinematography visuals, the frame on frame set definitely adds a layer of aesthetics to the music video.

Watch the video above and let us know what you think about it.

For now, the drop will only be an international drop, while we await the local drop which will be happening sometime in December. A rare collectible? Most definitely.

adidas SPZL Readies The SL80 For Winter, Or In This Case, Rainy Malaysian Weather

Written by Evely Tan

Before we begin, there are a few things that needs to be addressed. For one, this is not a true SPZL model, rather it is a SPZL take on the Super Light 80, hence the moniker SL 80. Second, it’s built for winter conditions, but translate that here, it’s just as suitable for the torrid rain of Malaysia as much as it is at home in the winter slush of UK. Now then, to the shoe.

Constructed from a mix of materials including a textile upper, premium leather and suede, the shoe also features a rubber outsole that provides extra grip, making them ideal for slick and slippery streets. Completing the look, the shoes features detailing at the collar with numbers “280611 08” alongside “SL 80” imprinted on the side.

The adidas SL 80 SPZL is now available at adidas.com retailing at RM600.

KYE Puts A Split Twist On The Onitsuka GSM

Written by Evely Tan

The Onitsuka Tiger sets out on its fifth stage of their 70th Anniversary collaboration, with the 5th designer being KYE’s Creative Director Kathleen Hanhee Kyeto.

Kye’s design ethos delivers an innovative and extraordinary fashion concept, splitting the ‘GSM’ silhouette in a bold black and white leather ensemble, reenacting the stark differences of night and day. Laces are omitted for this model, instead opting for a laceless look; a zip makes itself present on the tongue, while the eyestays remain shut.

The accompanying track top and pants are inspired by a shining star in the night sky in white adorned over a black base. Additional details include the familiar white and red lines as well as a KYE original charm combined with a pull tab with an engraved Onitsuka Tiger logo on the fastener for a sporty finish.

While no prices are announced as of yet, the Onisuka Tiger x KYE collection will be launched on October 21 at Onitsuka Tiger stores in KLCC and Mid Valley.

Timberland Veers Into Techwear With Its Latest Ultimate FW19 Drop

It seems that Timberland’s taking an all-new direction with its latest drop. Long gone are the days of the rugged aesthetics, which then morphed to an overall sleeker silhouette as the brand attempted streetwear, and now, under the guiding hand of Christopher Raeburn, has turn the heritage brand towards techwear.

The Ultimate capsule also prepares the user for the current Malaysian weather, ensuring that its garments and footwear are waterproof and insulating, allowing you to stay dry wherever you may be in this torrential rainy season. While the direction may be diverging to a foreign lane, the brand hasn’t forgotten its roots, and as such the Ultimate capsule consists of the Ultimate Boot,, featuring waterproof leather upper sourced from a silver-rated tannery that’s stamped by the Leather Working Group for sustainable environmental practices. Couple that with an all-new TimberGripTM sole system that’s built out of a bio-based rubber compound, traction will be an issue no longer. Ensuring comfort will be PrimaLoft® insulation, anti-fatigue footbed, and an EVA midsole combined that guaranteed all-day comfort and mobility. TimberDry membrane also makes its way to the 6-inch variant, adding an extra layer of protection for the more adventurous.

The jacket is where it gets interesting. DryVentTM ensures proper waterproofing while remaining highly breathable, while ergonomic insulation panels, zonal Thermore®  thermal booster insulation and extended ribbed cuffs traps heat and keeps the wearer warm without sacrificing mobility. If it gets too stuffy, there are heat release zips, with a plethora of pockets for easy reach of items.

the Ultimate boots costs RM 739 to RM 839 while the jacket is priced at RM 1199 and is available in stores now.
