8 Best Air Jordan 1 Releases This Year

2019 is counting down soon, and with the new year approaching the corner, we take a look back at some of the best shoes that dropped over the past few months. Jordan 1s take center stage when it comes to the garnering the most heat, much more so amongst the others. Hence, we’ve compiled a list of the best Jordan 1 colourways to have been released.

Rookie Of The Year

Quite unlike any other. The ‘Rookie Of The Year’ presents as the middle ground between normal Jordan models while taking a bit of a collaborative standpoint in the form of unstitched collar wings ala Off-White. The Beige colour used is a reflection of Jordan’s suit when he was presented with the ROTY award. The wings too have hidden details printed on the inside, stating his season performance and an excerpt of his acceptance speech, famously saying that it should be more about the team rather than him. A fresh take, that doesn’t refer back to the original line of colourways while still extending MJ’s legacy and translating it into the shoe.

Union Los Angeles

A throwback to the good old days back in the 90s. Interestingly, to communicate the release and stick in line with the concept, streetwear store Union actually revealed the sneaker at the vintage Rose Bowl Flea Market, and visitors who came by and questioned the shoe were caught with a hidden camera expressing their concerns on whether it’s a custom or a fake. 90s “vintage” street fashion was the main source of inspiration, as iconic colourways of the Air Jordan 1 are remixed. Details are everywhere, from exposed stitching, mismatched colours, and the UNLA tag underneath the Wings logo with yellow borders for the big panels. It’s one to cop for sure.

Not For Resale

A strenuous exercise in satire. Following the ‘Bred Toe’ format of blocking, the the AJ1 ‘Not For Resale’ also includes cheeky stabs at the resell culture with Not For Resale wording on the midsole, No Photos stitched on the heel, Please Crease on the toebox, and Wear Me on the tongue to encourage users to actually wear the shoe. Whether this sort of marketing is effective at all is another story altogether, but an attempt at this should be lauded as well as giving us a good chuckle.

Satin Shattered Backboard

All the colours of the SBB, elevated some more with generous use of satin, giving it a next level luxury feel. Also because it looks unlike any other Air Jordan 1s with its shiny exterior. You’ll be sure to pull a few looks when it’s on feet.

SoleFly Art Basel

In conjunction with Art Basel Miami, the homegrown retailer collaborates with Jordan Brand and closest out the year with one of the best looking colourways this side of Jordan since a long time. In true Miami spirit, the SoleFly Air Jordan 1 gets colour blocked in the Miami Hurricane palette. Key details are also present, paying homage to state. Inside of the tongue read “305” and “MIA” while a new Wings logo is debossed on the heel. As with all pretty colours, the SoleFly Air Jordan 1 is extremely limited, and drops exclusively at Art Basel Miami. Good luck getting a pair of these.

Court Purple/ Pine Green/ Bred Toe

I think we can class all three of these together, as they practically only swap out different colours, but retain the same blocking. All three get the same Sail leather that gives a slightly vintage look and paired with uprated leather, make these some of the best non-OG colours to ever grace the Jordan 1 silhouette. Evidently more so as people were lining up to purchase outside of JD Sports by the droves.

Off-White “UNC”

As an extension of Virgil Abloh’s ‘The Ten’ series, the UNC takes an alternate turn by colouring the reds, and replacing it with Carolina University Blue while still retaining the same concept. In a sense, hype from the ‘Chicago’ dripped onto the “UNC,” as people who aren’t able to afford and buy the original Off-White “Chicago” colourway dropped cash for these instead. It was an immensely popular one too, as more and more pairs made themselves present in the public, and at sneaker conventions all over Malaysia.

Shadow

One of the most coveted colourways, the ‘Shadow,’ as it’s called by its liberal use of grey on the toebox, swoosh, heel cup and wings, the model got a re-release after originally dropped in 2013. Simple, easy to like, and just enough pop to let people know that you’re wearing Jordan 1s without screaming it out. Classy

Where To Buy The ‘Semi-Frozen Yellow’ Yeezy 350

The McChicken Returns

Famed for being one of the most polarising colourways of the Yeezy 350s, it is also one of the rarest in the entire Yeezy palette. This time however, the ‘McChicken,’ as it is jokingly called as it resembles said McDonald’s wrapping paper, is getting a restock.

Understandably, the shoe is hard to wear; given the colour and overall boldness of the silhouette doesn’t translate well into various outfits, often requiring a fit pre-plan to avoid mass eyeburn from different colours of the spectrum presented on the occasional hypebeast’s clothes, but in this too, presents an opportunity to flex to the others that yes, you are able to afford such and pair, and yes, you are able to pull off such a pair. Then again, opinions can fly both ways.

The ‘Semi-Frozen Yellow’ Yeezy 350 V2 Drops this Friday, Dec 14, at Sole What, Footlocker, Crossover, Adidas Originals KLCC, and JD Sports Pavilion. And with the new Yeezy 350 ‘Static’ approaching it’s due, you’ll have somewhat of a decision to make this Christmas.

WDHANFTSY: Puma Cell Venom

Watch the show as Julian ‘Sunflower’ Leong (IG: @julianleong) throws a bit of shade and Bryan ‘Botak’ Chin (IG: @bryanbotakchin) explores why keeping it original is still the best way to do it.

A Closer Look At The Stussy x Nike Blazer

Today, we take a closer look at Nike’s collaboration with world-renowned streetwear brand, Stüssy, which is widely believed to be one of the first few streetwear brands who contributed to the rise of streetwear culture.

The Blazer Low and Mid were chosen for this collaboration, with the Low going under the hands of Ohio-bred professional skateboarder Kevin Terpening while the Mid was placed in the hands of Lance Mountain. The Low gets donned up in ‘Black’ with a ‘Palm Green’ swoosh, while the mid gets a light tan treatment otherwise known as the ‘Midwest Gold’ colourway. Both models feature Stüssy’s Stickman logo on the tongue label, Stussy branding on the heel collar, and heavily features hairy suede throughout.

Here’s where it gets interesting. the Mid comes with a leopard stencil for users to spray onto the shoe as part of the whole concept. The Low however, doesn’t get the same treatment.

Both pairs released at Stüssy Kuala Lumpur last weekend, bringing the old and new generation of sneakerheads together. The Blazer Low retailed at RM399 while the Blazer Mid was priced at RM429. It’s been a while since Stüssy and Nike collaborated and if you were wondering whether the release was worth it, rest assured the office believes that this one is definitely worth every penny.

5 Albums That Changed The Malaysian Indie Music Scene Vol. 1

Written by Aida Rashid

Today’s generation has benefited a lot from witnessing the indie music scene flourishing — all thanks to the pioneers and kick-starters of the scene back in the days. We wouldn’t have sustainable gig venues, jamming studios, record distributors if it wasn’t for the people who influenced a whole community and altogether, inspiring them to continuously make art not only for the sake of self-fulfillment but also for the sake of the sustainability & accessibility of the industry. And with that, we’ve come up with a list of influential record albums that played a huge role in establishing a solid foundation for our independent music industry.

Hujan — Hujan (2008)

There’s no doubting that Hujan is synonymous to the indie scene of Malaysia. Not only that, they can also be considered one of the pioneers of the catalyzed the underground indie movement, catapulting its growth due to the community that’s getting larger day by day. This album in particular not only sparked the birth and growth of the indie community due to it’s accessibility via Youtube and MySpace, but is also one of the albums that remains relevant even 10 years after its release. Go to any gigs and more often than not you’ll find someone covering one of the songs from their debut album. DugaanNya, Aku Skandal, Pagi Yang Gelap and Bila Aku Sudah Tiada — not only that, they are timeless, the tracks that defined adolescence for many of us and giving a sense of nostalgia when we listened to them. The album was so successful in fact, that it has become a point of reference to many other budding bands in this generation.

Selamat Tinggal Dunia — Butterfingers (2005)

After one decade of English-oriented, Cobain-driven music, Butterfingers surprised the industry with a full-on Malay experience in the form of an album called ‘Selamat Tinggal Dunia’. It received mixed reactions; some fans stopped being fans, and many others embraced it with much appreciation and celebration. One thing to note though, many of those involved in the art industry were intrigued by this particular album because of Butterfingers’ ability to shift their musical approach so glaringly — something many musicians or bands weren’t able to do with much success. Selamat Tinggal Dunia is very Malay-centric but in the sense that it wasn’t seen as sappy or typically jiwang. Instead, it embraced the usage of classic Malay words and Malay proverbs without making them sound out of place. It was the pioneer of Malay indie music, and made people feel proud of the Malay language, also inspiring notable bands like Hujan and Iqbal M. Selamat Tinggal Dunia is a bona fide gem to the industry, and one that is much celebrated because of the expansive influence that it had, spanning generations.

Yuna — Decorate (2010)

No one can deny that Yuna is one of the most influential persons not only in the independent music industry, but also our local music industry as a whole for the past decade. This album itself became the stepping stone to the increase of women musicians’ involvement in the industry that’s largely male dominated. Her debut album was integral to the rise of minimalist, homemade music that wasn’t only accessible to a large pool of listeners coming from her massive following on MySpace that became the prominent reason of her meteoric rise in the indie sphere, but also to the mainstream crowd with her Malay releases. ‘Dan Sebenarnya’, ‘Penakut’ and ’Cinta Sempurna’ were nominated for various local music awards and were constantly being requested on the radio. It’s undeniable that her massive reach started with her self-titled EP that had ‘Deeper Conversation’ and the rough version of ‘Dan Sebenarnya’, but this album in particular is the epitome of a solid, balanced and incredibly empowering album.

Bunkface — Phobia Phoney (2010)

Bunkface was largely known to be the face of punk rock back in the days. This album in particular included their hit singles like ‘Situasi’ and ‘Revolusi’ that were released some time earlier than the release of the album. These songs especially became instrumental in the celebration of the independent music industry at the time due to their success in getting a lot of airtime. It also became the turning point of mainstream radio where some form of representation of the independent music scene at that time began to seep through. It opened the gates for more music that were not typically mainstream-sounding to penetrate into the mainstream wave. Aside from ‘Situasi’, gritty and punk-heavy single tracks off the album like ‘Prom Queen’ and ‘Ekstravaganza’ also in one way or another contributed in the change of commercial value to a song, undeniably making it more inclusive and expansive.

Too Phat — 360 (2002)

Too Phat. There’s literally nothing else one needs to say when it comes to these guys to explain their greatness. The influence they have on today’s rap music is undeniable, despite already having parted ways over a decade ago. 360 in particular was memorable because of notable Malay-fusion element in tracks like ‘Alhamdulillah’ featuring Yasin — who would’ve thought rap and Nasyid could go together sounding so seamless? It was phenomenal to see how they were able to produce with such a collaboration, especially when their work had always been English-oriented and it was obvious that they drew most of their inspiration from the West.

The classic Malay-fusion element was also executed impeccably in Ala Canggung (Do You Wanna Have a Party?) featuring Lil’ Marissa — a track juxtaposed with the traditional lagu rakyat ‘Ala Canggung’. Honestly, I don’t think anyone would’ve put those two and two together. The fact that they went out of their comfort zone to pay homage to the Malay language & culture, but at the same time maintaining their musical roots is very much appreciated til now. The album also saw an exceptional collaboration with American rapper & producer, also one of the pioneers of West Coast hip hop, Warren G in Just a Lil’ Bit.

G-Shock Continues Its 35th Birthday With A Collab From Sneaker Freaker And STANCE Socks

Taking Inspiration From The Redback Spider

Continuing on with its 35th birthday bash, G-Shock have announced another collaboration with Sneaker Freaker to produce a fairly stealthy and evil looking G-Shock watch, basing influences from none other than the Australian Redback Spider. The Redback got its name from its distinctive red stripe on its back, and combined with a toxin that liquefies its victim’s insides, makes it one of the deadliest spiders this corner of the Earth.  It’s only Aussie if it kills you.

The DW-5700 model is used as the centrepiece of the partnership, reviving a rare red display, otherwise known to fans of G-Shock as the ‘Vampire’ display. Clasps, branding, and keeper are all in black while ‘Sneaker Freaker’ branding is juxtaposed on the display. Body and straps are molded from ‘Cool Grey’ resin, featuring a debossed Sneaker Freaker logo and spindly cobweb design around the clasp adds a subtle thematic touch.

An avid collector of G-shock himself, Sneaker Freaker founder Simon Wood had this to say, “I love nerding out on the details, and those red-faced watches are some of my favourite Gs of all time. When the Redback concept came together, the “Vampire” display just had to happen, but there were several technical hurdles to overcome. This is a highly personal nod to my love of G-SHOCK, and I’m very grateful they allowed me to use the iconic red display.”

In addition to that, the collab also tapped up STANCE socks to contribute its ideas for the project.

Going for RM 759, the watch will be available at all G-Factory outlets soon, so keep a lookout.

SevenCollar T-Shirt Return To The Music Scene With MURDER

Written By Aida Rashid

After almost a decade, Malaysia’s favourite alt-grunge band, SevenCollar T-shirt (SCTS) is back with a long awaited album release — marking this one their 4th record to date.

Co-produced by Jeffrey Little & the band themselves, MURDER is said to be their most promising & comprehensive release yet — as it is an accumulation of years of hard work. Having released ‘Ordinary Life’ in 2013, then ‘Lines’ in 2017 and ‘Black Rain’ just this year, their teasing game is what’s making the album one that’s very much anticipated.

“This is not a comeback album or even a reunion album. We take pride in writing and releasing a full 10-song album which is lacking in the local music scene nowadays,” said Saiful Ridzuan, frontman of SCTS on why it took some time to record MURDER. Pretty refreshing to see a band not being pressured to constantly have new releases for the sake of maintaining the quality of their art. Not many are brave enough to trade off relevance for quality.

The band is said to once again acquire Roslan Aziz to be involved in the mixing MURDER — the same producer they worked with in producing their sophomore album ‘Drones’. It’s quite exciting to see if there will be reminiscent of ‘Drones’ in MURDER or if the latter is going to be as different as possible.

The first single from the album, Lines, was released last year with an official video directed by Jordan Suleiman and icara. Black Rain, the second single was released on Oct 31 to coincide with Halloween. The video was directed by Shimy Latif. Lines and Black Rain both have very distinct sounds, as Lines is more clean and vox-driven while Black Rain is a glaring reminiscent of their third record ‘The Great Battle’ with prominent guitar riffs. With the gap between their third record and MURDER being almost 10 years, it is thrilling to see how their sound would be like — is there going to be remarkable change & development or is it more of about them sticking with their original sound but becoming more mature while at it? We definitely can’t wait to see what the album has in store for us.

SevenCollar T-Shirt will officially release MURDER with an album launch showcase on Dec 16 at The Bee, Publika, 8pm. Local songstress Luna Dira will make a special appearance as the opening act.

“We are thrilled to share MURDER with everyone and we can’t wait to hit the stage as it’s been quite some time since the band performed together,” said Keng Lee, the bassist for the band.

The entrance fee is RM70 (early bird) and RM80 (at the door), which includes a copy of MURDER (CD), an autographed poster and a limited edition sticker. Limited edition MURDER t-shirts and tote bags will be on sale during the launch as well.

Tickets can be purchased through stubbapp.com today. Listen to their latest single below:
