DrinkSensibly Tees A Lighthearted Reminder To Be Smart Booze Drinkers

To promote the culture of responsible drinking, Heineken Malaysia has paired up with the minds at Pestle & Mortar to create an exclusive array of DrinkSensibly (DS) T-shirts.

This limited edition, four-piece release travels the lighthearted route in creatively reinforcing good drinking habits via the simple tee. The collection features prominently typographic prints of tasteful and sensible drinking-related tips: “Dance More, Drink Slow”, “Superheroes Cab It”, “Less is More — Know Your Limit” and “Feed Me More”.

From Pestle & Mortar’s design perspective, statement tees were a good endeavour this time around considering it has made a semi-revival on recent runways. Overall, these tees use simplicity and a reserved colour scheme in a bid to be appreciated by a wide range of demographics.

A Piece Of Malaysia (APOM) Display Malaysia as Malaysians Know It

Arguably the seat of multiculturalism in Southeast Asia, Malaysia is symbolised by far more than just its Twin Towers, hornbills, harimaus and durians, but we don’t portray much of anything else to the outside world. Our souvenirs aren’t as diverse nor as unique as the country it represents.

APOM (A Piece Of Malaysia) is Malaysia as Malaysians know it. Incorporating the lighter, everyday experiences within today’s Malaysian culture, the brand delivers real insight of Malaysia with its products. With APOM, you’ll see visual references to double parking, local street signs and coconuts with bomoh powers instead of antiquated prints of iconic landmarks and whatnot we have seen all too often.

Here’s a look at how APOM have embedded a slice of Malaysia into its tees:

Recap: SneakerLAH 2016

The second coming of SneakerLah, arguably the largest local-flavoured sneaker convention to sprout within our shores, has come and gone, leaving behind satisfied sneakerheads and new owners of killer kicks. The two-day event that took bucketloads of sweat and tears to pull off was a happy success, so if you couldn’t make it this year, we think you’ve missed something big! Don’t worry though, SneakerLah 2017 is in the cards!

In the meantime, here’s a recap of what went down during SneakerLah 2016:

MASSES Pick: Why Swiss Army Man is Sensationally Awesome Madness

“What the f#%k?”

The final three words mouthed by Sarah, the object of protagonist Hank’s infatuation, aptly summarises what is arguably the most ludicrous motion picture Hollywood has evicted from its bowels in 2016.

Moments before the credits roll, the scene focuses on an awkwardly grinning, supernatural cadaver making a beeline for the open seas, propelled by its otherworldly potent farts. As the motorboat corpse gradually becomes an indistinguishable dot upon the horizon, there’s a mixed reception from the witnesses along the shore.

One smiles profoundly. One can’t help but chuckle. A couple stare in disbelief, and another face betrays a look of disgust. Of course, someone just had to go, “what the f#%k.”

The emotions conveyed by the characters during the ending cinematic of directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Swiss Army Man are a caricature of the responses the film received since its debut on the big screen. Some will love it, some will hate it, some will scratch their heads in confusion and everyone will mouth “what the f#%k.” I mean, how else could you react to a movie centred around a flatulent, zombie Daniel Radcliffe?

The film can and will be dismissed outright simply because the trailer alone leapfrogs way beyond the threshold of how much insanity the average person can register. But it’s precisely because it’s so out of the norm that Swiss Army Man is so compelling. Sift through the farting jokes and utter stupidity and you’ll find that it’s unexpectedly brilliant, laden with emotional depth and presents the irony of how death affords life its meaning.

Make no mistake though: Swiss Army Man is absolutely an overdose of crazy. The duo behind the near 100-minute film, collectively called the Daniels, are the kind of people that stumble throughout the script writing process only to unwittingly spawn a story on gay necrophilia… before deciding to just run with it.

It starts off relatively normal; Paul Dano’s character Hank is alone on a deserted island with a noose around his neck, wrestling fears on ending his own life. He then notices a body washed ashore… then this mildly suggestive scene transpires a couple minutes later:

Turns out the dead body is the magical farting abomination who Hank names Manny (played by Radcliffe). Manny’s mouth can dispense drinkable water like a perverse fountain. His farts have massive propulsive force, able to light fires with a single anal burp or act as “fuel” to ride himself and Hank across the ocean. His teeth can double up as a shaving blade. When aroused (yes, the corpse gets horny), his erected penis will point toward the way home. It’s a naughty compass.

It’s thanks to this nonsensical existence that Hank transitions from suicidal to someone desperate to return home. Manny, on the other hand, has no memory of who he is or why he’s dead. He doesn’t understand life, social cues, or any sensibilities possessed by the living, so Hank teaches him through a series of surreal, D.I.Y crafting projects.

As Manny gets reacquainted with the joys of living, Hank has to contend with the former’s sheer ignorance of common decency. The Swiss army man-corpse seems like the byproduct of Harry Potter and Donald Trump having a night under the sheets. He says what’s on his mind with zero filtering, from perverse thoughts to unintentional insults, and can’t wrap his head around the fact that farting in public is considered rude and embarrassing.

There’s a profound undertone behind the two characters’ seemingly shallow development. While the talking corpse hardly has a semblance of tact, he imparts upon Hank (and the film’s viewers) that it’s okay to be yourself, even if you’re weird. Quirkiness or outright odd-ball behaviour isn’t, by default, a cause for embarrassment. You aren’t worth less just because you are cast from a different mould. Manny, the unnatural, multipurpose, suit-wearing Doraemon, thoroughly exemplifies this.

With him as the centrepiece, the movie leans upon obscurity (is Manny real or a manifestation of Hank’s subconscious?) and fantastical nonsense to explore the meaning of existence, love and the road to self-understanding. It’s far more philosophical than the trailer initially suggests.

Swiss Army Man also makes every attempt to swerve off cliche. You’d think it’ll end with Hank in a ward, that he’d been imagining Manny all along or whatever, but no. The storytellers absolutely refuse to be predictable, at the cost of leaving some loose ends.

In a way, it adds to the film’s appeal. It leaves far greater room for interpretation, after all. Regardless, Swiss Army Man’s overall purpose may be impenetrable to understanding fully; it’s too hilariously weird. But – to employ the moral messaging it unusually relays – just because it’s weird and stupid doesn’t mean it’s a bust.

Give it a chance. Life’s sometimes too normal, anyway. Liven it up with a saturated dose of crazy… and experience the best “what the f#%k” moments Hollywood can offer this year.

Night Skies & Visions “Surrender” Lyric Video

13336043_969693079792562_7870551164142072485_n

Formed in April 2015, Night Skies & Visions is a pop-punk band that exerts energetic stage presence and comical interactions in their performances. The 5-piece outfit emphasises on the “fun” factor; it’s a key experience they want people to have while rocking out at their shows.

This relatively new band has dropped their latest single – in lyric video format – just last weekend, titled “Surrender” .

“Surrender is about letting go of what you can’t control and giving a chance for external forces to guide you, knowing that sometimes you’re not the one who decides how things will happen,” says vocalist Ceyln Chow.

The track took over a year from start to finish, with Ceyln noting that it’s one of those songs “where we had to dig deep to find the pieces that fit.”

“God knows how many times we felt like it’s a dead end, like maybe this song wasn’t meant to be complete, but somehow we managed to find the right pieces that fit into the song right before we gave up… right before we surrender.”

The band is currently working on an EP that is slated for release next month. It’s a musical offering that audibly personified the band’s journey toward discovering their own sound.

Pestle & Mortar’s “Under The Veil” Highlights Atrocities Against Nature

Pestle & Mortar Clothing‘s Fall 2016 collection – that is set to launch later today – is essentially fashion manifesting as a showcase of how profits and modernization are eroding mother nature. In an attempt to strike concern into the hearts of Malaysians on the atrocities committed against Earth, the pieces from this “Under The Veil” collection serve as illustrations of key issues faced by our ecosystem.

Deforestation is symbolised by swaths of lush, dark green that fades away into monotonous grays, which represents industrialisation. Global warming, on the other hand, is visualised by the heat of orange. The there is the practice of animal harvesting, represented by prints of red that imply the blood we needlessly spill.

Here’s a look at some of the pieces under the collection:

Guilty Pleasure by Futuremade Studio

Employing a reserved colour palette, Futuremade Studio presents its own take on casual wear in its most recent collection, Guilty Pleasure. Decidedly unassuming yet relatively quirky upon closer inspection, each t-shirt is tastefully simple in that it is easy to pair with whatever else lurking in one’s wardrobe.

The independent fashion label’s maroon-coloured signature logo tee looks like any other… until you take a look at the back. There’s a small pocket situated on the lower right, with typography bearing the words “Guilty” and “Pleasure” imprinted above and below the pocket respectively. The label promises that the pocket hides a little gimmick… but you’ll only find out if you get one yourself!

Designed with the idea that less is more, the collection’s nude-coloured tee is devoid of any embellishments on the front. Behind, the tee bears a large 3D-esque version of the label’s logo.

Their last tee under the collection is a double pocket variant that comes in either maroon or nude tones. The pockets are small and lidded, perfect for carrying around anything from earphones to mini-cameras to be easily whipped out for use.

The collection also sees the label’s first fashion offering for the waistline and below. It’s a pair of cropped pants that ends slightly below the knee, while the front and back panels are at different lengths. The piece is tightened by shoelace-like string, though there are still belt loops incorporated. The waistband component is inspired by skaters that tend to secure their pants with shoelaces instead of conventional belts for the purposes of comfort.

TMJ celebrates JDT’s 3rd consecutive M’sia Super League win in style

Earlier this month, the Johor Darul Ta’zim F.C. made history as the first ever team to win the Malaysia Super League for three years running since the league’s debut in 2004. Actually, the Southern Tiger’s achievement goes beyond the Super League; no other team has won a league championship this many times in a row since 1979, when Malaysia first introduced its league system!

Naturally, the team’s owner – The Crown Prince of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim – is justifiably ecstatic over the Southern Tigers successfully defending their reign in the league, after beating Terengganu’s T-Team in the final round of fixtures.

As kissing the trophy is not enough to convey his thrill of victory, TMJ drops a pair of sunglasses on it and stars in a hilarious video short on how “the trophy isn’t going anywhere.”

Enjoy!
