Hey There Young Sailor by The Impatient Sisters

By no means your typical vanilla flavoured run-of-the-mill girl band, The Impatient Sisters writes and sings expressive tunes with bouts of romantic depth, blending together quirky soul and folk-pop to create a unique flavour. Distinctive for their haunting harmonies and lyrical peculiarity, the three sisters Soraya Taib, Nazeera Taib and Irena Taib from Kuantan are happily addicted to making their fans happy with expressive songs on love, death, heartbreak, letting go, sleeping and other random observations that happen constantly in the modern day.

The sisters premiered their latest music video titled “Hey There Young Sailor” last weekend at the Bee, Publika. Their music video intends to trigger your nostalgia as a kid watching “The Little Mermaid” back in the 90s. The artistic illustration in this video is absolutely superb and slightly surreal; you’d be remiss to ignore the video itself and just let the music play in the background.

Talitha Tan’s “Okay” Lyric Video

Today, lovely local singer/songwriter Talitha Tan has released a beautiful lyric video for her single titled “Okay”. You might recognise the song from one of Darren Ashley’s previous Monday Juice tracks. The lyrics are the by-product of Talitha’s songwriter talents, with the bass lent by her colleague Herman Ramanado while the song itself was produced and mixed by Darren Ashley himself.

The way the lyrics tend to be incorporated into the background is a very nice touch. The song itself is a beautiful showcase of Talitha’s soothing vocals and is worth a listen on that account alone.

“I found the lyrics rather important, and a lot of people has been asking for it! It was written in a boy/girl perspective, typical love song perspective because it was easier to write it in that way, but i wrote the song based on everybody in general, how people come and go, people whom you think are “real” end up being acquaintances that end up leaving? And you’re just left wondering, what happened? what did i do wrong? I’m sure everybody can relate to that yeah? BUT yes, it hurts, and sometimes we pretend that it doesn’t or the one hurting us pretends not to know or care, but “I’ll be, Okay”. Why a lyric Music Video? I wanted a written story, on a story. Irfan Nadzree, the director of the video, did and amazing job directing, for making it happen! For having to put up with my pickiness. Nadiah Hamzah, from wayang works made this happen for me, so big ups to her for making sure everything will be “Okay” The entire crew did a great job”

“The video showed how I started off sad, and not really doing much? and how i went into the changing room coming out looking a little more bolder? Irfan’s vision to show the story of a symbolic journey of the girl having to stay in a toxic relationship with someone, and finally decides to wake up and stand up for herself, looking back knowing she’ll be okay without him. You know, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger?”

“I’m currently working on a EP with Bo Amir, he’ll be my producer for the EP. Wouldn’t say too near of a future, but hopefully soon! Maybe end of this year or early next year if everything goes well! Stay tuned to my social media for more updates. I also plan on posting more stuff on YouTube though, not only just music, but things i do! Like, parkour, rock climbing, gym, lifestyle, etc. If it works out.” said Talitha.

MASSES Picks: 5 Movies You Probably Have Not Watched (May)

hmetal
2016 is shaping up to be another great year for movie buffs considering the highly acclaimed Deadpool blockbluster and Captain America: Civil War both broke multiple box office records. Superhero film fans in particular will be satiated with more larger-than-life figures hitting the silver screen thanks to Doctor Strange slated for this coming November. Beyond that, we also have Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hitting the screen this December. It’s a promising year indeed, but that doesn’t mean the films of yesteryears should simply be forgotten, which is why we’ve decided to highlight a couple of older movies you need to experience over the weekend.

For this month’s episode of movies you likely haven’t watched but most certainly should, we have for you a woman coping with loneliness, the mischief of two kids who steal a police car, an anthology animation, a retro feel good movie with a lot of violence thrown in and a classic science fiction tale.

Watch some of them with caution; don’t say you haven’t been warned.

1. May (2002)

The story revolves around the titular character May, a socially inept young woman who is so traumatised by her difficult upbringing that she struggles to interact with other people. Her best friend also happens to be a glass-encased doll named Suzie, so you just know May is all about being crazy. “If you can’t find a friend, make one,” May’s mother said as she handed her the doll for her birthday. Yes, definitely crazy.

During her childhood, she had a lazy eye and after fixing it, she attempts to have more social interactions. However, each encounter inches her ever closer to insanity as she struggles with her seemingly endless loneliness. Will May ever become a “normal” person? Or will she finally go bonkers?

2. A Scanner Darkly (2006)

A Phillip K. Dick title, sci-fi fans should be familiar with the title as the movie is based on the very same novel. Set in a future where America has lost the war on drugs, the plot centres around Robert Arctor, a narcotics cop who has been begun to lose his sense of reality after staying undercover for so long. His job is to find out who Donna’s (his love interest) supplier is while spying on his perpetually stoned housemates. But things are more than what they seem as Robert’s superiors seem to have their hands dirty as well…

3. Cop Car (2015)

Two kids (who curse a lot, tsk tsk) stumble across an empty police car. Discovering the keys left in the car and being the naughty fiends that they are, they take it for a joy ride. Breaking a gate, having a near head-on collision with another vehicle and playing with the police radio are some of the antics they pull off before the owner of the police car radios in. Scared and afraid of the punishment that they will receive, the kids decide to return the car unaware that a hostage has been stashed in the trunk.

4. Heavy Metal (1981)

Old school animation at its best, Heavy Metal revolves around the mysterious Loch’nar, a glowing green orb with evil intentions. An anthology of science fiction and fantasy themes from futuristic New York City to deep space, the main characters of each story encounters the Loch’nar in different times, universes and dimensions. With a heavy focus on sexuality and violence, this is NOT a movie for your kids to watch so consider yourself warned.

5. Turbo Kid (2015)

If you like retro-looking movies, this one would be up your alley. Set in a post apocalyptic wasteland where water is scarce, we follow the adventures of The Kid, whose favorite comic book is Turbo Rider. While narrowly avoiding capture from the evil warlord Zeus’s henchmen, he discovers the remains of the real Turbo Rider and arms himself with a set of futuristic armor along with a wrist weapon. The Kid sets out to save Apple, the girl of his dreams who has been kidnapped by Zeus and to end Zeus’s tyrannical rule once and for all.

The “WILD” Series by AKUDESIGN

With a duo of gritty, symbolic animal prints on tees presented in its latest collection, AKUDESIGN looks to be a strong contender to fight over the limited space in your wardrobe this time around. The Malacca-based local clothing and apparel brand recently unleashed its “WILD” series of clothing products that bear animal designs, hand drawn in beautifully great detail.

For now, the collection consists of two tees. The white tee bears the illustration of two koi fish in opposing directions while the grey tee bears the symbol of a bird. It’s difficult to do the designs justice with words so have a look at the tees yourself.

Also, here’s the preview video for the “WILD” series below.

If you are interested in purchasing one of their products from their collection, you can do so at AKUDESIGN concept store in Malacca or authorized dealers at The Labels in Johor and The Duke in Kelana Jaya. Tak akan daku berhenti terus menuding jari
Tak akan henti diulangi
Tak akan daku berhenti

Apa Khabar Parody by Joe Flittai Featuring Israr One

Parodies are a form of imitation that is difficult to get right. There are countless satirical covers of songs that don’t quite manage to induce the giggles it so desperately craves. This particular parody on Joe Flizzow & Sonaone’s “Apa Khabar” attempts to evoke laughter by being silly and somewhat relatable, though we’re not quite sure if we should smile or cringe at the result.

A product of Joe Flittai featuring Israr One, the satirical “Apa Khabar Drawing” pokes fun at the frustrations faced by many architects, so this parody will naturally appeal most to people who slog away to get design plans done within the deadline.

Take a listen to their very own version of “Apa Khabar” and let the video speak for itself.
