Joe Chia merges Contemporary and Tradition in New Collection

Most fashion savvy individuals in Malaysia will likely be familiar with the street style-inspired and unique garments crafted by the eponymous Joe Chia label. For the Kelantanese and Raffles alumnus, fashion is tackled by being experimental, whether it’s via hand stitching or the materials used, to create distinctive yet functional outfits that possess strong urban qualities.

Joe’s more recent creations maintain their contemporary edge as evidenced in his Episode 02 collection. Many of these avant-garde designs have flowy and airy silhouettes, while the colours tend to be earthy hues with beige, grey, ivory  and splashes of taupe prominent throughout the collection. While the colours aren’t bold, the unconventional silhouettes allow the attires to be eye-popping nonetheless.

Other than the flowy and oversized silhouettes, the collection is accompanied by traditional trousers and a twist on athletic wear. It’s notable how Episode 02 stays modern while overtly borrowing influences from traditional Chinese clothing.

The sophisticated collection was showcased rather recently in his annual celebration and showcase called The Episode Series at Axis Business Campus, Petaling Jaya on 29th April 2016. Just a week prior to that, Joe Chia had the honour of showcasing his collection at the Vietnam International Fashion Week – Men’s & Women’s Spring Summer 2017 Preview in Gem Centre, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.

Here’s a look at his showcase during the Vietnam International Fashion Week 2016:

Andfersand seeks to Redefine Luxury

Luxury is defined by a state of great comfort and extravagant living (thanks dictionary). It’s a state of being that’s governed by materialism; we think of diamonds and gold as synonymous to grandeur and that luxury is achieved by having possessions with ludicrous price points. Local contemporary jewellery and accessories brand, Andfersand, doesn’t believe in that concept.

In their latest campaign video titled “Luxury Redefined”, Andfersand intends to challenge the notion that the number of figures on a price tag is a determinant for luxury. Aiming to bridge the gap between luxury and street fashion, the brand believes that luxury is defined through the effort, energy, soul and blood which are used to create that masterpiece and sense of accomplishment.

“Luxury is not obtained from the end product, but the process itself.”

From the brotherhood bar bracelets and premium crown cuffs to the d-tach cuff showcased in their campaign video, each Andfersand product seems to be the result of a crafter’s attention to detail to blend contradictory elements together; rustic & sophisticated, edgy & conventional, street fashion & luxury. Each item is available in various sizes so you don’t have to worry about the product being a poor fit.

Here’s the “Luxury Redefined” campaign video for your viewing pleasure:

Monday Juice: “Move” By Darren Ashley

There’s an air of serenity and relief that pervades Darren Ashley‘s latest Monday Juice track, “Move”, not least thanks to a very peculiar sound that’s incorporated into the melody halfway through. The sound is somewhat similar to the one you’d get when you’re relieving yourself in the loo and your ejected fluids coalesce with the water below. That refreshing sense of liberation during toilet trips is perfectly captured in “Move”, though we are sure that wasn’t the intention.

Darren’s audio creations tend to be so incredibly unique that it is difficult to describe in words, and his latest Monday offering is no different. “Move” seems inspired by lots of water, a squeeze of lemon and the beach during summertime, with some classical Indian influences here and there wrapped into a riveting electronic beat. We could be very wrong.

Lyrically, the song is dedicated to all the dancers out there. It paints a picture of someone- back from the mundane and stressful daily grind- gaining catharsis by losing herself to dance.

Honestly, the man deserves to hog far more of the spotlight considering his tremendous talent. If you agree, do follow Darren Ashley’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SoundCloud and Youtube accounts to show your support!

In case you are interested, here are the lyrics for Darren Ashley’s “Move”:

She takes in the open sky
The stars in her eyes they shine
But she don’t wanna watch life go by
She don’t wanna watch life go by

Back from the grind breaking to pieces
Wipe off the sweat and let all her senses go
Heart on the line head in the riches
But will it ever stop
But she don’t care cuz she’s got all her bigger dreams
She always said that love is stronger than it seems
And even if her world caved in she’d have her means
Inside her head she’ll dance the night away

She takes in the open sky
The stars in her eyes don’t lie
But she don’t wanna watch life go by
She don’t wanna watch life go by
Cuz life is but you and me
We all search for unity
But till then she close her eyes
Till then she close her eyes
And then she dance

Know Your Shoes!

Imagine spending £2,000- translating to roughly RM12,000- on a pair of sneakers you were utterly convinced were the real deal only to find out, thanks to the trained eyes of avid sneakerheads, that the shoes are a fake. That’s precisely what happened to Neelofa’s little sister.

The younger sibling of the local celebrity, who goes by the name Little Miss Khan on her social media accounts, unwittingly purchased a ridiculously overpriced replica of an elusive and much desired adidas shoeSpecifically, she had got her hands on a pair of the Yeezy Boost 350 ‘Pirate Black’… or so she thought. When she uploaded a picture of her newly bought shoes on social media while mentioning the price tag, some local sneakerheads were quick to point out that those particular ‘Pirate Black’ shoes were… well, “pirated”. Several netizens were rather sarcastic about the whole thing and hilarity ensued.

Defending against multiple comments noting that the shoe is a fake, the young Little Miss Khan insisted on its originality despite the fact that she actually didn’t physically buy the pair herself (her “personal shopper” did the deed) and that she didn’t seem to do any research prior to the purchase.

It’s important to note that despite the rarity and demand for these Yeezy’s, it’s daylight robbery for even the originals to have a price tag breaching the RM10,000 mark. In fact, depending on the size the Yeezy Boost 350 ‘Pirate Black’ should cost within the RM3,000 to RM4,500 range. You had ONE job,  Little Miss Khan’s personal shopper, and what a disaster you managed to accomplish!

Knowledge is power, so for your own sake as well as your wallet’s well-being it always pays to read up before dropping serious cash on any item. There are a multitude of online content available that specifically tackle how to differentiate original sneakers from the fakes. Know your shoes before you wear your shoes, folks!

If you somehow still manage to accidentally acquire fake sneakers (fingers crossed it didn’t cost you 5 figures), Little Miss Khan has an over 3 minute video to showcase how to rock your fake Yeezy pairs with confidence! Do take notes.
