An Interview With Jem Crossover – “Velvet Twin Pack”

The 1990s was the era in which Puma took on the running world with its Trinomic technology, a uniqueness that allowed the brand to establish its dominion in runners’ footwear. Later on, the classic runner silhouette was altered to adapt to an urban lifestyle. Fast forward to the here and now, Crossover Concept Store has, through its collaboration with Puma, infused the latter’s technology and distinctions into the Blue Velvet-inspired “Twin Velvet Pack”.

Some may consider it odd that the pack took aesthetic cues from a psychological horror film in the mid 80s to create “Roses” and “Mystery“, bearing the Blaze of Glory silhouette and the Disc Blaze silhouette respectively. So what’s the deal behind it? We spoke to Crossover Concept Store’s founder, Jem, for a little insight on the creation of these new pairs.

1.We know that the Velvet Twin Pack is heavily inspired by a movie named “Blue Velvet”. What is the connection between you, the shoes and the movie?
The movie is one of my favourites. I wanted to share what I thought was fascinating & worth sharing with others. In short, the Velvet Twin Pack is my interpretation of one of my passions into sneaker design.

2.Could you give us the specific breakdown of the inspiration behind each shoe?
I prefer to let the shoes do the talking. But to sum it up, I’m always attracted to contradiction. There is always something intriguing when two opposing elements come together as one.

3.Did you own any PUMAs growing up and what is your favorite Puma model?
My first pair of sneakers was the PUMA SUEDE, so my relationship with the brand goes way back. Puma holds a sentimental value over me. I was a big fan of Beastie Boys and saw them wearing Puma kicks on their Check Your Head album cover. That time I mistakenly took PUMA Clyde as PUMA Suede, but I have no regrets as PUMA Suede remains one of my favourite sneakers even now.

4.Growing up, did you always know you were going to be in the sneakers industry? What helped spark your passion for footwear?
I grew up with a lot of movies & music. I guess that indirectly linked my passion to sneakers. I remember listening to Beastie Boys, and saw one of them donning PUMA SUEDE on one of their album cover, and I was sold. I was fascinated with sneakers and I see it as a sign of rebelliousness & individuality.

5.Growing a retail brand and opening stores isn’t easy at all, so what is your word of advice to anybody wanting to get into the sneaker industry?

Do what you love. Don’t believe what others say.

6.As for you and Crossover, what are the future plans that are in the pipeline? Maybe you could give hints on a couple of projects in the works?
There will be a lot more collaborations & projects from Crossover, so do stay tuned.
For this near future, there will be a project between us and Reebok, and a top Malaysian designer. We are really excited for this project and our fellow sneaker fans should look forward to it too.

Horrible in the Kitchen? Enter #KitchenLife!

We Malaysians love our food. If someone were to ask any of us whether we actually just live to eat, we would most likely sweat puddles in an attempt to suppress our inner glutton from bursting belly first from its cage, bellowing “ABUDEN?!” in between mouthfuls of nasi lemak.

Though as much as we love shovelling servings of karipap, roti canai and pan mee (sometimes in succession) into our black hole of a stomach, some aren’t particularly adept at actually cooking delectable dishes ourselves. The kitchen can be a veritable nightmare if you are prone to making only scorched toast or seeing plumes of smoke emanating from the oven while attempting to bake something remotely edible.
If you’re a disaster in the kitchen, our homeboy Bryzoid and his good buddy Sufiz (who is also the owner of the Kulcats Barrio restaurant) could be your salvation in cooking. They recently started their own cooking channel on Youtube called #KitchenLife as a means to convey easy methods for cooking delicious meals.

Their recently uploaded first video guides you on how to make a yummy roast chicken… using only 5 ingredients! Just lay back, watch it and then start cooking! If cooking tutorials or food videos are something you fancy, definitely keep an eye out for more videos from this duo in the future!

Kyoto Protocol “KL I Sayang You” Music Video

Five-piece local rock band Kyoto Protocol has professed their love over our imperfect capital city through their latest music video, “KL I Sayang You“. This little number derived from their album titled “Catch These Men” features an upbeat, poppy melody as the backdrop to the appreciative lyricism, and a cute guitar solo that lends the music a catchy quality.

This music video was done by the talented production house Luey Motion Lab where they managed to capture the love we urban dwellers harbour for KL, despite mounting costs of living and the unmistakably uglier aspects of the dreaded rat race in the city.

Fuad said “I personally really liked the idea because it allows us to deliver the message of the song, which is to “take back our town” or in bahasa it’s “pulangkan kota”. And what we mean by that is just because someone cuts your queue, doesn’t mean you have to right to do it too, It was meant to remind KL-ites and Malaysians of our culture of “sopan santun” But we also encourage taking actions in your own hands to make things right again. Just how I went to get back my wallet from Shan in the video”

Do watch their music video below and enjoy!

If you want to purchase their merchandise and albums or simply want to stay abreast on the band’s happenings, do follow them on their official social handles at Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Unravel the Velvet Twin Pack’s “Mystery” this Saturday!

The second half of the Velvet Twin Pack, the result of the Puma x Crossover collaboration, is set to finally hit retail stores this coming Saturday, 7th May! Fittingly called “Mystery“, this final part of the Blue Velvet-inspired collection focuses on a colourway that’s evocative of the dark and intriguing nature of the antagonist in the movie this pack pay tribute to.

The dominating swath of black across the Disc Blaze silhouette embodies the sadistic and vile aura of Blue Velvet’s big bad, Frank Booth. Adding a slight contrast are the specks of white dotting the shoe’s disc cage, representing the tiniest hints of goodness buried miles deep within the dark persona.

The disc cap embedded on the pitch black upper- made of mesh, nubuck and suede- symbolises the antagonist’s oxygen mask after suffering a near fatal stroke, while Crossover’s signature punk pink on the heel tab represents the unpredictability of Frank Booth’s behaviour.

Stay tuned over at Crossover for more information regarding this dark pair. It won’t be long now before we finally get to unravel a “Mystery” box, quite literally!

Levi’s still keeping it Original at 143 Years Old

Considering this denim jeans master has been gifting us plebeians the pleasure of donning some of the finest quality denim wearables ever for the last 143 years, it’s only fitting the celebration of Levi’s® storied existence should be executed in an adequately illustrious manner.

To celebrate this milestone, the lifestyle brand invited 28 Malaysian personalities from various creative backgrounds for its latest social media campaign entitled ‘We Are Original’. Levi’s has long been an advocate of originality, storytelling and personalised garments, and the local talents echo these characteristics within the campaign through expression of their own individual style and aesthetics.

Grafitti artist Cloakwork, for instance, showcases his unique artistry… by covering himself in paint and having spray cans littered around his vicinity, illustrating that he is in his element. A few other notable people to look out for in the ‘We Are Original’ campaign is the legendary frontman of a local rock band, Amy Search, the brains behind Minut Init Art Social James Ly and Dali; and the songstress capable of sending shivers down a one’s spine through her vocals, Najwa Mahiaddin.

Levi Strauss Malaysia’s Commercial Director, Anitha Narayanan said, “The people who wear Levi’s® have always been the inspiration for our brand. The intention of this campaign is to celebrate how the world ‘Lives in Levi’s®’ by blending storytelling with social media on a global scale. As an advocate of originality and authenticity, ‘We Are Original’ captures the collective power of diverse individuals and what it means to wear denim that is uniquely theirs. Levi’s® asserts denim leadership and cultural significance with iconic products that made the brand great and forever relevant.”

All in all, the denim masters are simply trying to say this: they’re the denim company equivalent of a hipster grandfather, still trendy despite breaching the ancient 143 year old mark. And that’s quite the achievement indeed.
