MASSESzine No. 9 : The Travel Issue

The concept of travelling – preferably to idyllic locales far detached from any resemblance to our mundane daily lives – is firmly rooted in the hearts of young Malaysians today.

Globally, youth travel is extremely popular, though Malaysia particularly has a very strong base of young adults that love to mobilise beyond the familiar. This shouldn’t be a surprise; after all, this country is one where low-cost flights are common and travel opportunities within the Southeast Asia region are aplenty.

We love the idea of escaping the modern grind, to embrace new sights and sounds despite the limitations of our wallet. In an effort to not bust the bank, we look for great tourist spots that are value for money, where enjoyment can be experienced on the cheap. To many, that means a backpacker’s trip to Phuket or Cambodia, where accommodation is extremely affordable, nature-based activities are abundant and nightlife is buzzing. Though sometimes greener pastures are just a state or alleyway away.

As far as cost is concerned, young travellers here can find solace in that for the most part, domestic travelling here is extremely cheap. Also, much of what is available ‘across the pond’ can also be experience right here, from natural beauty, to an invigorating night life and all the way to luxury shopping and accommodation. However, relying entirely on popular landmarks to decide you travel experience is quite limiting. Sometimes the best sights and sounds are found off the beaten track.

In this issue of MASSESzine, we’re taking you on a figurative journey and talk about all things related to travel and the great outdoors, with the budget of the average young Malaysian in mind.

Camping is one activity that’s easy to dismiss because of how tedious it can be, and our writers found it out the hard way as they erected tents at a couple locations in Malaysia. It’s an acquired taste, but even those that hate camping can find something to love when sleeping in the wilderness. Of course, preparations for the endeavour are many, so we’ll run you through some tips and tricks that’ll make your camping experience far more enjoyable.

Tourism in Malaysia embodies far more than just its island hot spots, namely Penang or Langkawi. Through these pages, we’ll highlight the country’s smallest state, Perlis, and how we think it might just be Malaysia’s silent gem.

Trips are never complete without pictures, so this issue will be laden of them, many of of which will attempt to capture the essence and may facets of what makes this country beautiful.

Of course, there are experiences that are simply impossible to achieve within our borders. Curious to learn about the unfamiliar, we enlisted the help of a young Malaysian to document her journey to the highly inaccessible and infamous hermit kingdom of North Korea. Truly a once in a lifetime experience.

There’s more, but like any good journey, it is one of great discovery. Happy travels!

Machas On Wild Looking For “Kaa$u”.

Presenting Klash and Jayskitz‘s latest single titled “Kaa$u” which was taken from their upcoming collaborative EP. The duo managed to produce an anthem-like track about something that is very, very important to us, MONEY.

With producer Dae Kim’s still-in-development-video-making skills, the music video depicts the hustle of a modern man and his everyday life. While they do what most machas do, the lyrics itself discuss more about the state of the world we live in right now as the guys go on about life’s currency, the current economic state, and aspirations of ballin even after death.

Check out Klash and Jayskitz collaborative music video “Kaa$u” above.

One of the latest endeavour from the growth of the scene is a new consignment store called PLUG located in Pandan Indah, Kuala Lumpur. TEALIVE Has Responded To MUTHA PUAKA

We recently got some updates regarding the TEALIVE vs MUTHA PUAKA matter as the local clothing brand recently went took to their social media platforms to give an update regarding what is happening. TEALIVE has responded back to MP saying that the line “Never Fear The Strong” is an original line coined by their creative team, TBWA Kuala Lumpur. But MP went on to claim that some personnel within TBWA know of MP and have purchased their products with the brand’s motto “Never Bully The Weak, Never Fear The Strong” clearly printed on them. Read the full statement below.

Tealive has responded and claims that the line ‘Never Fear The Strong’ is an original line coined by their creative team. We know that their creative agency is TBWA Kuala Lumpur.

In response to that, our lawyer sent a letter to the Chief Operating Officer of TBWA, Ms Hui Tsin Yee, to ask if they maintain the same position. Now, like Loob did before, they are ignoring us, despite having our contact details.

Key people in TBWA are well aware of Mutha Puaka. Personnel from TBWA are known to have purchased our t-shirt with the motto printed clearly on the back.
The crux of the Tealive brand manifesto is taken directly from Mutha Puaka. We created the motto ‘Never Bully The Weak, Never Fear The Strong’, and have used that motto in merchandise since 2014. We have no problem with them being inspired by our motto, but to use the exact phrase ‘Never Fear The Strong’ is plain lazy, and wrong. ‘Never Fear The Strong, Especially Strong Tea’? Come on. There are so many ways they could have crafted a slogan inspired by our motto. For example, ‘Fear Not Strong Tea’. Or a colloquial version could be, ‘Strong Tea, Scared What?” Was it necessary to copy the line ‘Never Fear The Strong’ word for word? Adding the words ‘Especially Strong Tea’ to our motto isn’t creative. It is just plain lazy.

An agency as celebrated as TBWA could do much better than to rip off Mutha Puaka’s concept and motto and then sell the idea to Loob Holdings.

Our lawyer has also sent a letter to Chatime’s lawyers asking for details of their ongoing case. As a small outfit being bullied by large corporations, we will be careful in deciding when to take our fight to the Courts.

Never Fear The Strong. Mutha Puaka coined it. Mutha Puaka lives by it.

It seems that Loob Holdings have pushed the blame to TBWA in regards to the issue of copying MP’s motto, and its looking like another party might be added into this fight.

If you want to follow this matter closely, do follow Mutha Puaka on their Instagram account & Facebook page, or alternatively you can just stay tuned to this site as we will be updating once we get more info.
