Sharifah Amani Fights The Townsfolk And Her Inner Demons As She Becomes The Lead Detective In MOTIF

It’s been a while since we had a thriller of this sort gracing our silver screens, but MOTIF is adamant on bringing back proper suspense and horror as it was originally intended.

Directed by Nadiah Hamzah whom recently won at the Cannes Lions Film Festival on her anti-bullying PSA, MOTIF drops us into the story of Sharifah Amani (Inspector Dewi) who’s sent to Tanah Merah to investigate the case of a missing teenager. As she’s not one of the local townsfolk, she faces plenty of backlash from the villagers, including her partner Inspector Rizal (played by Taqim Zaki), and even more despised by the father of the missing girl, Hussein (played by Datuk Rosyam Nor).

In a very classic fashion, Dewi uncovers several trails leading up to a few probable suspects, but as she gradually uncovers the mystery, her own demons also come to trouble her. In the trailer, we’ll see if she’s able to handle her own problems while solving the case, or will it overcome her and eat her alive.

Stay tuned for the movie review, but in the meantime, watch the trailer above and let us know what you think!

Kit Woo Fuses Buddhist Monk Robe Attire And Western Tailoring For His SS20 Collection

Kit Woo came to stun, and his SS20 collection first seen on the KLFW runway presents an East meets West affair that results in clothes that roughly visualise what comfy techwear would look like.

The designer takes inspiration from the fluidity of traditional buddhist monk robe attire, combined with precision Western styled tailoring, resulting in precisely sewn pieces with soft draping, forming a harmonious range of textiles, details, and construction, successfully intertwining two roots of culture into one.

While details are not made available yet on how to purchase, browse through the pictures to see Kit Woo’s philosophy brought to life.

This Movie Scared The Living Shit Out Of The Venice Film Festival Attendees

Usually, the gold standard and seal of approval that a movie is a must watch is attested to how long the standing ovation for the movie is. For comparison, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino got a 7-minute standing ovation during its screening debut at the Cannes Film Festival. So when The Painted Bird instead got a range of screaming and people trampling over each other to get to the door, you know it’s one for the books.

Based on a 1965 novel of the same name and directed by Czech director Václav Marhoul, the movie revolves around post war Czech-Ukrainian drama, detailing the story of a boy who’s name was not revealed as he’s moved from town to town across Europe, taking in all the horrors and atrocities during the tail-end of World War 2.

Drained of all the colour and beautifully shot in black and white, the movie showcases grisly details in stark contrast; a war torn region that negates no laws, sending people into animalistic behaviours, subjecting victims in gruesome nature. So gruesome in fact, that a Guardian writer hoped to never cross the paths with the movie again after steadily going to three hours of what he calls a “savage, searing three-hour tour of hell.”

One heck of a compliment then. It’s highly unlikely that the movie will be made available here, as it’s very graphic, but if you’re keen to brave its stories, you’re in for a very twisted ride.

Ewan McGregor Goes To The Deep End To Make Peace In The Sequel To The Shining

Written by Evely Tan

A movie that’s unlike any other typical modern horror narrative, ‘Doctor Sleep’ follows the events of ‘The Shining’ with Mike Flanagan taking the directing reigns.

If you recall, ‘The Shining’ came to a close with Jack freezing to death after getting lost in a maze outside the hotel, while Wendy (Jack’s wife) and Danny were able to make their escape in a snowcat. Following these events, the sequel reveals Danny (Jack’s son) struggling with alcoholism, who is still traumatized by the sinister events that occurred at the Overlook Hotel when he was a child.

Dan, who possess the gift of the ‘shine’ (a fusion of telepathy and clairvoyance) meets a teen, Abra who is currently endangered as she too, shares the same gift with Danny. No longer trying to make peace with his past, Dan finds himself revisiting Overlook Hotel along with Abra to resolve the conflict between the True Knot, a cult whose members try to feed off the ‘shine’ of innocents to become immortal.

This sequel takes the audience back to Overlook Hotel, revisiting famed sights such as the brown, red, orange carpet, the axed-away ‘REDRUM’ door in the Torrance family’s old room and the return of the perpetually creepy Grady twins along with former Overlook Hotel cook Dick Hallorann.

This psychological thriller film incorporates multiple elements from the previous series along with visions of King’s multiverse. Hence, the story’s mysterious nature and the withholding of details that would provide clearer meaning behind many of the film’s components are much anticipated. Enough of jump scares, we finally get a chilling psychological thriller that everyone deserves.

Doctor Sleep releases on November 8 worldwide. In the meantime, watch the trailers above to continue on the IT hype.

The Closing Of Speedy In Mid-Valley Signals The End Of An Era

Physical Mediums Are No More.

It was a good ten years ago. I still remembered walking pass a Speedy shop, standing there intently as Woody Harrelson was frantically looking for a pack of Twinkies while Jesse Eisenberg stood guard, perplexed as to why this grown man made getting the equivalent of a pack of Gardenia Twiggies here the number one priority in a post-apocalyptic zombified world. The hours seemed to glide along as I stood in the middle of the corridor, fixated on what was to come. That is until my mother forced me to the supermarket to shop for her groceries. It did left me wanting however, and I was curious enough to bite the bullet and purchased the CD to watch it later at home.

And 10 years, seemed to just float pass right after that. I guess this was a long time coming. After the demise of Rock Corner, it was only a matter of time until shops like these had to call it a day and wrap up as technology progressed through.

You see, with the existence of streaming services, namely Spotify, Deezer, Joox, there wasn’t really any need for people to go to a record store and search for their favourite artist’s work. Everything could be done from your phone; simply typing up the name would bring up the search, and if you wanted to bring another song from another artist into the mix, all you had to do was create a playlist. It was cheaper too. At an average price of RM 15 per month, literally millions of songs are on your fingertips, just waiting to be discovered and probably never listen to as you continue on hoarding, keeping it in your head that someday you’ll EVENTUALLY get to it, but you know that’s a lie.

Little wonder then, that with the rise of streaming platforms, music stores faced a problem they never would’ve thought would take a huge bite out of their share. It was the start of the end.

And when Netflix arose with their giant marketing campaigns and aggressive push into the local audience, you can guess what happened after that. The problem is worsened with the fact that with smart TVs becoming more and more affordable, a lot more people can access Netflix’s entire library with just a single switch, wiping the previous steps of getting up from the couch, going to the CD player, switching out the CD, and walking back to the couch before plonking your arse on it.

Now you just flick the remote, go to which series you feel like watching (you’ll probably rewatch How I Met Your Mother because you’re too scared of trying out something else), and then proceed to binge 3 seasons in one night. Remember, that previously to do this, you had to buy a box set that, depending on how nice the box is, can cost you anywhere in between RM 100 to RM 600 bucks for the whole thing. Now, you just cough up 50 bucks per month and get a billion hours worth of content just like that.

Enthusiasts too, are starting to bow out to the new era. I remember reading this one audio engineer’s memoir that before this, he used to religiously collect CDs, vinyls, Blu-Rays and what have yous to get the best possible quality in sound, and visual. Now, he just puts on Tidal and plays it on his home stack, and that’s it. Much like TV killed the radio star, the advent of streaming, killed the physical medium. Not as catchy, but who gives a shit.

Stores like Speedy then, are a reminder of days gone by as society progresses through each living day on this Earth, never stopping to smell the flowers, or in this case, appreciate the growing relic that is a video shop, trying to hold its ground in a tidal wave of streaming platforms; and with the impending arrival of Disney+ (who’s gargantuan list comprises of National Geographic, Star Wars, Marvel, Disney, and Pixar), the final nail on the coffin may as well have been placed.

So let’s take this time, and remind ourselves of the good old days, of the good times that played a major part of our own lives, and our families, and let it all go.
