ASICS Teams Up With Sneakerlah And Hundred% To Put A Nasi Lemak Twist On The GEL-Kayano 5 OG

No one would’ve seen this coming to be honest. In an effort to expand and get to know the local sneaker scene, ASICS has teamed up with retailer Hundred% and sneaker convention Sneakerlah to produce a shoe based on Malaysia’s favourite food, the nasi lemak.

The GEL-Kayano 5 takes centre stage as colours of the ‘Nasi Lemak’ are blocked onto the shoe, with off-white representing the rice and egg white, green reflecting the cucumber, red to signify the sambal, yellow to symbolise the yolk, and finished off with hints of brown to reflect the nuts and anchovies.

Of course, performance aspects aren’t left behind too. The ASIS GEL-Kayano 5 OG is one of the more comfortable shoes on the market, liberally adding GEL inserts to the midsole to absorb and repel impact as much as possible.

Getting them won’t be as easy though. The shoes are dropping exclusively at Sneakerlah this 5th and 6th October at a retail price of RM 599 with only 500 units available. So book your tickets quick, and you’ll be well advised to spend a bit more on the VIP pass should you want one in your collection.

Jetcetera Sings An Ode To The Fuckboys In Their Latest Single, Damn Johnny

Written by Evely Tan

Fuckboys. Love em, hate em, they will always be just there, for the fun, and disappear when times get hard, and local indierock outfit Jetcetera wants to highlight this in their latest single, “Damn Johnny.”

It is a rollicking fun tune, and for the young hearts, a precursor for what is to come in their relationship. With sombre vocals offering an introspective of a longing yet non-potential romantic interest towards a socialite, it takes a turn for the dumps as the romantic interest feigns interest and leaves. As defined by Jetcetera, Johnny (noun); an all-consuming temporary high whose affection & intimacy you crave no matter the time and place.

Upon the band’s common ground in the love for Alvvays, this track most definitely vibes the same. “Damn Johnny” is out now on all digital platforms

For more of Jetcetera, listen to their other single, Hear Me Out.

Casio Swaps Out The Opaque Case For A Transparent One In 3 G-Shock Models

The G-Shock gets a sort of a minor update; none on the software or movement front, but rather, its casing. Where before this all of the G-Shock watch has been encased in an opaque, resin case, these new editions opt out for a more sophisticated looking semi-transparent version.

Toughness isn’t lost on it too, as it’s still made out of resin, and is mixed with metallic colours to bring the feel of the 80s into today’s fashion. The DW-5600SK-1DR, DW-6900SK-1DR, and GA-700SK-1ADR go under the knife to receive this treatment. The watches go for a price of RM 459, RM 479, and RM 549 respectively, and are available to purchase now at all G-Factory and authorised retail outlets.

ASICS Brings Back Its Iconic 2000s Runner, The GEL-Kinsei

Written by Evely Tan

Over more than a decade after its release, ASICS relaunches the Gel-Kinsei, its iconic early millennial runner which first saw its debut in 2006.

Its designer, Hisanori Fujita was heavily inspired by samurai armor and wanted the sneaker to replicate the way in which it protects the body while still allowing it to move freely. The influence is applied to its overall construction with the sneaker’s heel mirroring the angle of a samurai’s katana swords.

Update with modern advancements, that include technology now aligns with the overarching aesthetics, with exposed GEL cushioning on the heel joining an Impact Guidance System to look after every step with both comfort and support. This progressive design continues to look just as polarising whether in sport and street style.

Available now for a price of RM 755, this pair channels the futuristic noughties vision with glacier grey, while hits of red and blue highlights all the necessary tech elements underfoot.

Butterfingers Will Reunite Once Again For Their 20th Anniversary Of Transcendence

Written by Evely Tan

Relive the glory days of the underground, as legendary grunge band Butterfingers reunite to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their best-selling album, Transcendence.

And it has been a long while too. Since their last performance in 2009, the band members have continued down their own paths with Emmett leaving to Canada to continue his studies and Loque heading to Berklee and subsequently becoming a solo act under the guise of monoloQue. Heavily influenced by metal bands such as Metallica, the group eventually transitioned to grunge as the genre was rising amongst the scene back then.

Of course, all of this is a sweet, sweet throwback to the glory days of the band, and one that would be welcomed by loyal fans whom have been religiously following the band from start till finish. From wildly popular tracks like The Chemistry (Between Us), Vio-pipe, Nicc ‘O’ Tyne, Faculties of Mind, each one holds a different meaning to each individual, and at last, will be reunited for one night only.

The reunion concert will take place at Stadium Malawati, Shah Alam, on the 2nd of November. Details are yet to come, but we’ll keep you posted if and when it comes, so stay tuned.

Straight after the release of the 350 V2 “Cloud White,” Ye comes back to release the “Citrin,” a more neutral colourway that almost resembles the “Sesame.”

A soft yellow-gum midsole is contrasted by a wraparound brown-gum outsole, alongside a full foot Boost cushioning system finishing off with a set of tonal round laces. Def Jam’s Expansion To Southeast Asia Means One Thing: Our Rappers Are World Class

Just yesterday, Flizzow posted a teaser indicating the next chapter of the Malaysian hip-hop scene, the introduction of Def Jam Records right here in Southeast Asia.

For those who don’t know who Def Jam is, here’s a refresher course. Predominantly focusing on hip hop, pop, and urban music, Def Jam distributes Kanye’s GOOD Music label, Listen Up Forever Records, and includes a star studded roster from the likes of BTS, Logic, Big Sean, Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Nas, 2 Chainz, YG, Jeremih, Q-Tip, Pusha T, Vince Staples, Desiigner and Jhene Aiko. It’s practically the go to label for hip-hop bar none.

Clockwise: Ariel Nayaka, Joe Flizzow, DJ Bomber Selecta, Fariz Jabba

Def Jam’s move to our shores will probably indicate a search for new talent as globalisation continues to occur, and this region just so happens to contain enough talent for the label to turn its head here. With a full spectrum of talent, from the likes of Flizzow, Yung Raja, Alif, Fariz Jabba, Daboy Way, A. Nayaka, DJ Bomber Selecta, Young Bong, and Deejay Buddah, it signals one thing to the world, that out rappers are world class.

On another very far fetched point, it could also mean that the aforementioned artists, might have a bigger chance of landing here across the pond, but that’s a story for a different day.

America. The UK. Japan. One of the few things that these regions have in common is the presence of Def Jam Recordings, and now, South East Asia is about to join those ranks.
